Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the 2016 Man Booker Prize A brilliantly observed, large-hearted work of fiction that introduces to a North American audience a major and mature literary talent. For readers of David Bezmozgis, Nathan Englander, Neil Smith, John Cheever, and Milan Kundera. Nine men. Each of them at a different stage of life, each of them away from home, and each of them striving – in the suburbs of Prague, beside a Belgian motorway, in a cheap Cypriot hotel – to understand just what it means to be alive, here and now. Tracing an arc from the spring of youth to the winter of old age, All That Man Is brings these separate lives together to show us men as they are – ludicrous and inarticulate, shocking and despicable; vital, pitiable, hilarious, and full of heartfelt longing. And as the years chase them down, the stakes become bewilderingly high in this piercing portrayal of twenty-first-century manhood.

Book excerpt: Anyone can throw a punch. Anyone can sell a drug. Anyone can manufacture meth. None of it takes any special skill or strength or courage. There is no glory in those stories. This book is about what God has done. And about what God is doing. Look into the eyes of that man in the mugshot, and you'll see no life there. That man is dead. Now he's alive. Jesus still raises the dead. And that's all that matters. Stories about guns and drugs and the gangster life might be exciting, but they only lead back to darkness. Stories about Jesus lead us to the light. That Man Is Dead is a story about Jesus. With passion and honesty, Dennis Otto shows the reader how the Holy Spirit transformed an ornery ex-con into a joyful servant of God.

Download or read book Men Explain Things to Me written by Rebecca Solnit and published by Haymarket Books. This book was released on 2014-04-14 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Book Critics Circle Award–winning author delivers a collection of essays that serve as the perfect “antidote to mansplaining” (The Stranger). In her comic, scathing essay “Men Explain Things to Me,” Rebecca Solnit took on what often goes wrong in conversations between men and women. She wrote about men who wrongly assume they know things and wrongly assume women don’t, about why this arises, and how this aspect of the gender wars works, airing some of her own hilariously awful encounters. She ends on a serious note— because the ultimate problem is the silencing of women who have something to say, including those saying things like, “He’s trying to kill me!” This book features that now-classic essay with six perfect complements, including an examination of the great feminist writer Virginia Woolf’s embrace of mystery, of not knowing, of doubt and ambiguity, a highly original inquiry into marriage equality, and a terrifying survey of the scope of contemporary violence against women. “In this series of personal but unsentimental essays, Solnit gives succinct shorthand to a familiar female experience that before had gone unarticulated, perhaps even unrecognized.” —The New York Times “Essential feminist reading.” —The New Republic “This slim book hums with power and wit.” —Boston Globe “Solnit tackles big themes of gender and power in these accessible essays. Honest and full of wit, this is an integral read that furthers the conversation on feminism and contemporary society.” —San Francisco Chronicle “Essential.” —Marketplace “Feminist, frequently funny, unflinchingly honest and often scathing in its conclusions.” —Salon

Download or read book That Man Is Not Your Husband written by Jai Karnley and published by . This book was released on 2019-02-07 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you ever asked yourself why is it that I'm still not married, then this book is for you. That Man Is Not Your Husband is written for Christian women who have found themselves frustrated with dating, and for some reason, have always ended up with the wrong guy. I was tired of hearing all my friends and perfect strangers' lament about how they are unlucky when it comes to landing the right guy, or that there are no good guys left out there, or simply put, how men are intimidated by their successes; better yet, saying I'm just going to stay to myself if it takes all of this to find true love! Well, this book is the answer to your prayers. I want to help Christian women know why they haven't found the right guy by highlighting signs they ignored while at the same time guiding them through the right selection process. By reading this book, which is based on true-life stories and transparency, you will begin to see what you could not see before, thus helping you to avoid or mitigate some unnecessary mistakes. Continuously choosing the wrong guy dampens self-esteem among other things. If any of this resonates with you, then this book is a must read for you. By reading this, you will discover the blockages and injustices that have been keeping many of you from receiving what God has for you. After conceptualizing this book, you will also walk away with a sense of empowerment, confidence, assurance and the tools to help you qualify a man; furthermore, you will learn how to see yourself in a whole new light. You will know that you are worthy of being hand-picked. You will read some of my dating mishaps as well as shared stories of others with similar frustration in spite of their background, status or education. The answers you are seeking are just a few pages ahead. No longer will you wander around in the dark. God put that desire in your heart for marriage, and you are going to get married! Now walk with me and some of my friends as we journey to finding love.
Download or read book On the Spirit and the Letter written by St. Augustine St. Augustine of Hippo and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-18 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The person to whom I had addressed the three books entitled De Peccatorum Meritis et Remissione, in which I carefully discussed also the baptism of infants, informed me, when acknowledging my communication, that he was much disturbed because I declared it to be possible that a man might be without sin, if he wanted not the will, by the help of God, although no man either had lived, was living, or would live in this life so perfect in righteousness. He asked how I could say that it was possible of which no example could be adduced. Owing to this inquiry on the part of this person, I wrote the treatise entitled De Spiritu et Littera, in which I considered at large the apostle's statement, "The letter kills, but the spirit gives life." In this work, so far as God enabled me, I earnestly disputed with those who oppose that grace of God which justifies the servances of the Jews, who abstain from sundry meats and drinks in accordance with their ancient law, I mentioned the "ceremonies of certain meats" [quarumdam escarum cerimoniæ] - a phrase which, though not used in Holy Scriptures, seemed to me very convenient, because I remembered that cerimoniæ is tantamount to carimoniæ, as if from carere, to be without, and expresses the abstinence of the worshippers from certain things. If however, there is any other derivation of the word, which is inconsistent with the true religion, I meant no refernce whatever to it; I confined my use to the sense above indicated. This work of mine begins thus: "After reading the short treatise which I lately drew up for you, my beloved son Marcellinus," etc.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the 99% occupied Wall Street... Before the concept of social justice had impinged on the social conscience... Before the social safety net had even been conceived... By the turn of the 20th Century, the era of the robber barons, Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919) had already accumulated a staggeringly large fortune; he was one of the wealthiest people on the globe. He guaranteed his position as one of the wealthiest men ever when he sold his steel business to create the United States Steel Corporation. Following that sale, he spent his last 18 years, he gave away nearly 90% of his fortune to charities, foundations, and universities. His charitable efforts actually started far earlier. At the age of 33, he wrote a memo to himself, noting ..".The amassing of wealth is one of the worse species of idolatry. No idol more debasing than the worship of money." In 1881, he gave a library to his hometown of Dunfermline, Scotland. In 1889, he spelled out his belief that the rich should use their wealth to help enrich society, in an article called "The Gospel of Wealth" this book. Carnegie writes that the best way of dealing with wealth inequality is for the wealthy to redistribute their surplus means in a responsible and thoughtful manner, arguing that surplus wealth produces the greatest net benefit to society when it is administered carefully by the wealthy. He also argues against extravagance, irresponsible spending, or self-indulgence, instead promoting the administration of capital during one's lifetime toward the cause of reducing the stratification between the rich and poor. Though written more than a century ago, Carnegie's words still ring true today, urging a better, more equitable world through greater social consciousness.
