Download or read book That Girl of Pierre s written by Robert Davis and published by Bethlehem Books. This book was released on 2007 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to massive technological and medical advances in the life sciences (molecular genetics, biology, biochemistry, etc.), modern medicine is increasingly effective in treating individual patients, but little technological advancement has focused on advancing the healthcare infrastructure. Management Engineering for Effective Healthcare Delivery: Principles and Applications illustrates the power of management engineering for quantitative managerial decision-making in healthcare settings. This understanding makes it possible, in turn, to predict performance and/or real resource requirements, allowing decision-makers to be truly proactive rather than reactive. The distinct feature of this book is that it provides international exposure to this challenging area.

Download or read book The Girl from the Chartreuse written by Pierre Péju and published by Random House (UK). This book was released on 2005 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Etienne Vollard, owner of the bookshop The Verb To Be, is a red-haired man imprisoned in an enormous body and his solitude. One wet afternoon, driving a vanload of books, he knocks down and seriously injures a little girl, Eva. In the hospital, he meets Eva's mother, Therese, a struggling single parent who lacks maternal instincts and whose dream is to be far away, alone. Both are haunted by guilt: Therese because of her lateness in collecting her daughter, and Vollard because he did not manage to stop his car on time (even if he knows that he could not have avoided Eva). Vollard visits Eva regularly while she is in a coma and reads books to her, while Therese spaces her visits out. When Eva eventually wakes up, she has become mute and is terribly weakened. A few weeks after Eva has been sent to a rehabilitation centre in the Massif de la Chartreuse, Therese gets a job far away and asks Vollard to visit her daughter on her behalf. However, nothing seems to help "La Petite Chartreuse" - Vollard calls Eva that way in reference to the monastic order of the Chartreux - to enjoy life again. She becomes weaker every day to such a point that Vollard decides to find Threse and to take her back to her daughter before it is too late...

Download or read book Pierre s Journey to Florida written by Thomas N. Tozer and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-08-02 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historical fiction book is about the life adventures of Pierre de Bré, a young French Huguenot, at the time when European and Native Americans first came into contact with each other. His family and community were massacred by the Spanish and, as a consequence, he lived among the Timucuan Indians of Florida for several years before returning to France. It is a story of harsh times in Europe - a time with divisive, indeed tumultuous religious and political problems, and a time when exploration of the unknown parts of the world was so exciting, romantic, and adventurous. The book should be of interest to anyone fascinated by the original Native American culture or with a curiosity of the historic events leading to the settling of North America. The author’s motivation for writing this book came from four distinct sources: a visit to St. Augustine, Florida, where he became captivated with the early contribution of the French Huguenots to the founding of the United States; knowledge that Huguenot ancestors on his mother’s side came to the United States from France in the late 17th century; visiting most of the places in France and Florida mentioned in the book; and going to elementary and high school with numerous Native Americans.
Download or read book Melville written by Andrew Delbanco and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2013-02-20 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If Dickens was nineteenth-century London personified, Herman Melville was the quintessential American. With a historian’s perspective and a critic’s insight, award-winning author Andrew Delbanco marvelously demonstrates that Melville was very much a man of his era and that he recorded — in his books, letters, and marginalia; and in conversations with friends like Nathaniel Hawthorne and with his literary cronies in Manhattan — an incomparable chapter of American history. From the bawdy storytelling of Typee to the spiritual preoccupations building up to and beyond Moby Dick, Delbanco brilliantly illuminates Melville’s life and work, and his crucial role as a man of American letters.

Download or read book Know Your Value written by Mika Brzezinski and published by Hachette Books. This book was released on 2018-09-25 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bestselling motivational guide that TheAtlantic.com calls "a rallying cry for women to get the money they deserve." Why are women so often overlooked and underpaid? What are the real reasons men get raises more often than women? How can women ask for -- and actually get--the money, the job, the recognition they deserve? Prompted by her own experience as cohost of Morning Joe, Mika Brzezinski asked a wide range of successful women to share the critical lessons they learned while moving up in their fields. Power players such as Facebook's Sheryl Sandberg, Senator Elizabeth Warren, Harvard's Victoria Budson, comedian Susie Essman, and many more shared their surprising personal stories. They spoke candidly about why women are paid less and the pitfalls women face -- and play into. Now expanded to address gender dynamics in the #MeToo era, Know Your Value blends compelling personal stories with the latest research on why many women don't negotiate their compensation, why negotiating aggressively usually backfires, and what can be done about it. For any woman who has ever wondered if her desire to be liked can be a liability (yes), if there is a way to reclaim her contribution after it's been co-opted in a meeting (yes), and if there are strategies men use to get ahead that women should too (yes!), Know Your Value provides vital advice to help women be their own best advocates.

Download or read book Reading Melville s Pierre Or The Ambiguities written by Brian Higgins and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2007-05 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This engaging new study uses biographical evidence to explore Pierre, the puzzling novel that Herman Melville wrote immediately after the publication of Moby-Dick. Parker and Higgins reveal that Melville drastically altered the end of the novel after a troubling meeting with his publisher and editor about the perceived failure of Moby-Dick. Melville re-wrote Pierre's protagonist as a writer and used the novel to attack the publishing industry. Parker and Higgins' exploration into Pierre shows that this is a deeply flawed novel, but an intriguing and revealing glimpse into the mind of an American literary giant.
Download or read book Movies and Methods written by Bill Nichols and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1976 with total page 770 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: VOLUME 2: "Movies and Methods," Volume II, captures the developments that have given history and genre studies imaginative new models and indicates how feminist, structuralist, and psychoanalytic approaches to film have achieved fresh, valuable insights. In his thoughtful introduction, Nichols provides a context for the paradoxes that confront film studies today. He shows how shared methods and approaches continue to stimulate much of the best writing about film, points to common problems most critics and theorists have tried to resolve, and describes the internal contraditions that have restricted the usefulness of post-structuralism. Mini-introductions place each essay in a larger context and suggest its linkages with other essays in the volume. A great variety of approaches and methods characterize film writing today, and the final part conveys their diversity--from statistical style analysis to phenomenology and from gay criticisms to neoformalism. This concluding part also shows how the rigorous use of a broad range of approaches has helped remove post-structuralist criticism from its position of dominance through most of the seventies and early eighties. -- Publisher description.
