Book I m Feeling Lucky

Download or read book I m Feeling Lucky written by Douglas Edwards and published by HMH. This book was released on 2011-07-12 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A marketing director’s story of working at a startup called Google in the early days of the tech boom: “Vivid inside stories . . . Engrossing” (Ken Auletta). Douglas Edwards wasn’t an engineer or a twentysomething fresh out of school when he received a job offer from a small but growing search engine company at the tail end of the 1990s. But founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin needed staff to develop the brand identity of their brainchild, and Edwards fit the bill with his journalistic background at the San Jose Mercury News, the newspaper of Silicon Valley. It was a change of pace for Edwards, to say the least, and put him in a unique position to interact with and observe the staff as Google began its rocket ride to the top. In entertaining, self-deprecating style, he tells his story of participating in this moment of business and technology history, giving readers a chance to fully experience the bizarre mix of camaraderie and competition at this phenomenal company. Edwards, Google’s first director of marketing and brand management, describes the idiosyncratic Page and Brin, the evolution of the famously nonhierarchical structure in which every employee finds a problem to tackle and works independently, the races to develop and implement each new feature, and the many ideas that never came to pass. I’m Feeling Lucky reveals what it’s like to be “indeed lucky, sort of an accidental millionaire, a reluctant bystander in a sea of computer geniuses who changed the world. This is a rare look at what happened inside the building of the most important company of our time” (Seth Godin, author of Linchpin). “An affectionate, compulsively readable recounting of the early years (1999–2005) of Google . . . This lively, thoughtful business memoir is more entertaining than it really has any right to be, and should be required reading for startup aficionados.” —Publishers Weekly, starred review “Edwards recounts Google’s stumbles and rise with verve and humor and a generosity of spirit. He kept me turning the pages of this engrossing tale.” —Ken Auletta, author of Greed and Glory on Wall Street “Funny, revealing, and instructive, with an insider’s perspective I hadn’t seen anywhere before. I thought I had followed the Google story closely, but I realized how much I’d missed after reading—and enjoying—this book.” —James Fallows, author of China Airborne

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author, Joan Poggi Alessandria, a devout Christian, decided to collect and preserve one-line expressions for more than fifty years. She felt the story of Ruth was a classic example of love and joy. Ruth was widowed early in her marriage and decided to stay with her mother-in-law, contrary to the custom of returning to her original home. The time for harvesting was at hand and since she was living with her mother-in-law, Ruth decided to glean grain during harvest time. She asked permission to follow behind the harvesters to glean (pick up) grain that fell on the ground. They gladly gave permission and added to her basket. This story exhibits the love and caring Ruth experienced when she married into her new home. Her lineage led to David, who became Israel's king. The story of Ruth is a good example of love, devotion, and kindness that filled Joan's life. Read the single line expressions and find peace, love, and humor.

Book In the Rearview Mirror

Download or read book In the Rearview Mirror written by Jerry W. "Slats" Jackson and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-10-12 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hearts of the people depicted in this book are for the most part as pure and white as the drivcn snow. Well, most of the time anyway. There is little malice in their blunderland, you might say (but probably wouldnt). Take, for example, my friend Jack Weldons well-meaning but flawed odyssey when he guided much like Moses his innocent Lubbock High Schoo classmates on their senior trip to Sligo, Texas, a host town that turned out to be sort of a ghost town. The school board members, you see, had mandated that it be a day trip no longer than a certain number of miles from Lubbock because, in their wisdom, they reasoned that an overnighter would surely result in half the class returning home as mothers-to-be. So Jack simply took a compass with a pointy end that he placed on Lubbock, calibrated how far he could go with the circles outer extremity to conform to the school boards edict, and settled on Sligo. It turned out to be a disaster, despite Jacks having tried his best to avert such an outcome. But you nevertheless must admire him for trying. There are certain other anticdotes that came along in Lubbock and elsewhere that are described in somewhat sordid detail in this collection of newspaper columns that I hope will evoke a tear or two not in sadness but hopefully in joy as I delve into occasional supercilious silliness while exploring some of lifes foibles that have cropped up along the way. And as you, dear reader, travel lifes byways, please always be cognizant of my old Uncle Bens deeply thought-out truism which is, to wit, that it takes a mighty big dog to weigh a ton. -- Jerry W. Slats Jackson

Book Serenity It s A God Deal

Download or read book Serenity It s A God Deal written by Bill Hanks and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2010-03 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My name is Bill H., and I'm, well...complicated! Clinically, I'm a recovering drug addicta "with Attention Deficit Disorder to boota "who, after twenty-two years of consuming a plethora of mind-bending toxins, is very much grateful to be alive. In 1996, Bill recognized a problem with drugs and alcohol, and subsequently checked himself into a treatment center. As a result, Bill, in a volunteer capacity, taught weekly classes on recovery for ten years at the rehab center that helped him to help himself. Having personally worked with approximately eight thousand patients in recovery, he provided Twelve-Step based support and teachings to those in need. One of the objectives of this book is to incorporate into the mainstream the author's understanding of the Twelve-Step Program of Recovery. Although this book was written from the perspective of a recovering addict, the reality is that you don't have to be a drug addict or alcoholic to benefit from a spiritual pilgrimage that has led millions to peace of minda "from desperation and despair, to hope and then Serenity. After all, the only difference between the people of 'mainstream America' and those with addiction(s) are the ways in which they handle their problems. Peace of mind resides within these pages. This book is Bill's effort to reach out and, through lessons learned from his own experiences, help those in need find their way to Sobriety, Sanity and Serenity. Through his teachings and stories (some funny, some not so funny), the author hopes to touch every emotion, and perhaps feelings you didn't know you had."

He also discovered that many successful people aren't especially smart, good-looking, or lucky. They're ordinary people, without special gifts, who achieve success by following the8 factors. Richard himself is a good example. He says, I could never figure o ut how an ordinary guy like me succeeded in business, won top awards and became a millionaire. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Why am I here?" "What is my purpose?" "Would the world have been better or worse off if I hadn't been here?" Doubtless, I'm not the only one who's asked such questions. When I was really down, I even resented God for creating me, & prayed I wouldn't wake up the next morning! I reached out to God & friends through handwritten notes & poetry; that was the "safest" manner of expression. I can't think straight or verbally communicate effectively if I feel I'm being scrutinized; I'm sure I have company there too! So, at the request of friends, I'm publishing a sample of my writings. Don't worry, there's plenty of lighthearted subjects included too! I pray they will inspire, comfort, entertain & bless those who open these pages.

Book excerpt: Warren Ziller moved his family to Southern California in search of a charmed life, and to all appearances, he found it: a gated community not far from the beach, amid the affluent splendor of the 1980s. But the Zillers’ American dream is about to be rudely interrupted. Warren has squandered their savings on a bad real estate investment, which he conceals from his wife, Camille, who misreads his secrecy as a sign of an affair. Their children, Dustin, Lyle, and Jonas, have grown as distant as satellites, too busy with their own betrayals and rebellions to notice their parents’ distress. When tragedy strikes, the Zillers are forced to move to Warren’s abandoned housing development in the desert. In this comically bleak new home, each must reckon with what’s led them there and who’s to blame—and whether they can summon the forgiveness needed to hold the family together. With penetrating insights into modern life and an uncanny eye for everyday absurdities, Eric Puchner delivers a wildly funny, heartbreaking, and thoroughly original portrait of an American family.
