Book Textiles and Clothing Classic Reprint

Download or read book Textiles and Clothing Classic Reprint written by Ellen Beers McGowan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-29 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Textiles and Clothing This book has been written primarily to meet a need arising from the introduction of the study of textiles into the curriculum of the high school. The aim has been, there fore, to present the subject matter in a form sufficiently simple and interesting to be grasped readily by the high school student, without sacrificing essential facts. It has not seemed desirable to explain in detail the mechanism of the various machines used in modern textile industries, but rather to show the student that the fundamental principles of textile manufacture found in the simple machines of primitive times are unchanged in the highly developed and complicated machinery of to-day. Minor emphasis has been given to certain necessarily technical paragraphs by printing these in type of a smaller size than that used for the body of the text. The authors emphasize the finished products and their relation to the household. Chapters have been introduced on the purchase, testing and economical use of textile ma terial, with the hope of pointing the way to a concrete and practical application of the study of textiles. The woman of to-day can no longer afford to be untrained in this respect, and because of present economic conditions a definite obliga tion is laid upon her to understand the nature and real worth of clothing material and house furnishings, in order to buy with judgment and economy. The girl in high school has the opportunity to acquire this knowledge, which will function in her later life. We are gradually breaking away from the formal teaching of sewing as an isolated subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from d104iles: A Handbook for the Student and the Consumer The growing emphasis upon textile study in college depart ments of home economics or household arts, and the increasing use of the textile industry as teaching material in other depart ments and other grades of schools, shows a recognition of the part that the textiles are playing in the development of civiliza tion and in our everyday life. Interest in the subject is still further accentuated by the movements now on foot to regulate the social-economic conditions in the textile and clothing indus tries and to secure standardization and honest labeling of textile products, as is being done for food products by the pure food laws. Book Textiles and Costume Design Classic Reprint

Download or read book Textiles and Costume Design Classic Reprint written by Evelyn Peters Ellsworth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-06 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from d104iles and Costume Design Indeed, ermine is a striking example of a misused accessory in a costume. It is fascinating, because it conjures up visions of royal personages, knights and ladies. The laws of the Middle Ages (edward III) required that it be worn only by nobles, and to-day in Europe ermine is worn on state robes; the rank and position of the wearer is in many cases indicated by its presence or absence and the disposition of the black spots, and when worn in crowns or coronets it is a recognition of heraldry. Therefore, at all times it should be reserved for state occasions or worn for mally with certain royally textured and dignified clothes and fabrics, just as velvets and satins are reserved for formal gowns and not for kitchen or garden work, just as large velvet hats are not worn in the morning with workaday clothes or short skirts, and just as royally plumed, large velvet hats are suited only to formal afternoon or evening gowns of velvet or satin. Much might be written upon this subject of good taste and imagination in the wearing of clothes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Textile Fabrics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Textile Fabrics Classic Reprint written by Daniel Rock and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from d104ile Fabrics Under its widest acceptation the word textile means every kind of stuff, no matter its material, wrought in the loom. Whether, therefore, the threads are spun from the produce of the animal, vegetable, or mineral kingdom whether of sheep's wool, goats' hair, camels' wool, or camels' hair 3 whether of flax, hemp, mallow, or the filaments drawn out of the leaves of plants of the lily and asphodel tribes of flowers, or the fibrous coating about pods, or cotton; whether of gold, silver, or of any other metal the webs from all such materials are textiles. Unlike these are other appliances for garmwt-making in many countries; and of such materials not the least curious, if not odd to our ideas, is paper, which is so much employed for the purpose by the Japanese. A careful reference to a map of the world will show us the materials which from the earliest ages the inhabitants of the world had at hand, in every clime, for making articles of dress. In all the colder regions the well-furred skins of several families of beasts could, by the ready help of a thorn for a needle and of the animal's own sinews for thread, be fashioned after a manner into various kinds of clothing. Book Sewing and Textiles

Download or read book Sewing and Textiles written by Mary Lockwood Matthews and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sewing and d104iles: First Lessons for Elementary Schools This volume is intended for use in places beginning the study of sewing and textiles. It has been arranged for use in the elementary schools and does not presuppose any training in general science. It is strictly an elementary treatment of the subject. The book deals with the selection of clothing and garment-making. Garments are made, the com mercial patterns being used. The lessons in tex tiles are correlated with the lessons in garment making by studying, in the class, the materials that are being used in the laboratory. The hygiene of clothing, and the clothing budget, are discussed when the dress is the laboratory problem. Through the Home Problems, the home and school work may be correlated. Attention is called to the insertion of material for the use of the modern project method. Many teachers will' find that this makes the plan of the book more attractive and practicable._ It need not dis turb the work of the teacher who prefers the longer established ways of teaching. The author acknowledges the help given in illustrating the book by the United States Depart ment of Agriculture, The United States Bureau of Standards, Cheney Brothers, The Linen Thread Company, and Landers, Frary and Clark. The author also gratefully acknowledges the criticisms and suggestions of educators who kindly read the manuscript. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thrift Clothing A contribution can be made by every girl and woman who knows how to sew if they will make the effort to conserve the supply of textiles and other clothing materials by seeing the possibilities in the outgrown or partly worn garments now hanging in closets or stored away. The following suggestions about made-over garments are given with the idea of thrift and economy in view, whereby the supply of new clothing material may be released for the service of those who necessarily must have strong, warm and new material. Sewing classes in schools now have the chance, while the enthusiasm for thrift is in the air, to learn to cut by pattern with the added interest of shaping the result into a new article from that which otherwise would be discarded. Cleansing, repairing, remodel ling may have the interest of becoming almost a game, the goal of which is to attain new garments from old ones by plotting, planning, twisting and turning until the old yields the new in form and purpose. Hats, cloaks, dresses, men's coats, trousers, overcoats, knit underwear, with accessories such as tape, linings, buttons, hooks and eyes, ribbons, pieces of silk, velvet, cotton goods, buckles, may all contri bute to new shapes and designs under the manipula tion of fingers in training, directed by the ingenuity of teachers who are stimulated to their best efforts by the present emergency. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Clothing: Choice, Care, Cost Waste is one of the main causes of high prices. It has become a habit with large numbers of people, but must be checked or prices may go still higher. This can only be accomplished by each individual consumer and family buyer locking her pocketbook and only opening it when an article is absolutely necessary for health and comfort in living, is a worthy article, and is not too high in price for its intrinsic value. To do this wisely will require the education of many of our citizens in the entire field of expenditure, including the Wise selection of textiles and clothing.
