Book excerpt: A Texas Ranger—a virtual relic from the past–walks into a bar… but it isn't funny when he gets shot down on the street the moment he walks out… Just like the doctors warned, Dad has made lots of promises about staying off the bottle. That doesn't stop me from being disappointed to find him at a local speakeasy one night when he's supposed to be working a case. The leathery, stout man at his table is unmistakable: Templeton Gorham, former Texas Ranger. The governor temporarily shut down the Rangers years ago, but before that, Templeton was virtually a legend in his profession. He and JD are laughing over drinks like old friends, but later, when the three of us walk out into the night, gunshots pierce the darkness. Templeton is left lying in a pool of blood, and I'm left with a brand-new case on my hands. When the victim won't speak, can I find the answers to keep a killer from finishing the job he started?

Book Rodriguez Texas Ranger

Download or read book Rodriguez Texas Ranger written by Rick Harper and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2013-12 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a young man, Arturo Rodriguez was always the guardian of the underdog. This theme carried through to his adult life when he became the first Mexican-American Texas Ranger, an intense and dramatic event in South Texas history. In Rodriguez... Texas Ranger! author Rick Harper recounts Rodriguez's life and law enforcement career. As Harper tells Rodriguez's story, he also chronicles many of Texas and Mexico's significant historical events and their corresponding sociocultural, economic, and racial developmental patterns to demonstrate not only their immediate impact, but also the ways in which these events and patterns framed the region's present state. Providing insight into the dynamic nature of Texas during the 1960s and '70s, Rodriguez... Texas Ranger! tells a tale of Gringos and Chicanos, justice and vengeance, the law and the lawless, pistoleros and politics, sharpshooters and shopkeepers, ranchers and farmers, cowboys and cattle drives, governors and goat headers, and Texas Rangers. It's about the passing of a frontier system and the emergence of modern times.

Book Texas Ranger Leo Bishop

Download or read book Texas Ranger Leo Bishop written by Betty Oglesbee and published by NorTex Press. This book was released on 2022-09-01 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leo Henderson Bishop (1903-1973) was among the first of the “new” Texas Rangers appointed by James V. Allred upon his inauguration as Governor of Texas in 1935. Two boxes of Bishop family memorabilia at the estate sale of Bishop Family Historian Bettye Bishop Robbins in 2016 provided the basis for this personal glimpse into her father’s life, along with supportive articles from the San Augustine Tribune. Of special interest in Bettye’s collection were the transcribed Dictabelt tapes from an interview by Dr. Ben Proctor in 1968 at the Carta Valley, Texas ranch home of retired Texas Ranger Leo Bishop. Primary-source stories from those who lived them are always significant, especially when spoken in the unvarnished vernacular of the person doing the telling. Published in 1991 by Eakin Press, Dr. Proctor’s Just One Riot, Episodes of Texas Rangers in the 20th Century, included a Leo Bishop chapter. Ranger Bishop’s life story embodies all the traits that make him an icon within the annals of law enforcement: perseverance, honesty, seeking the truth, attention to detail, and a watchful eye.

Download or read book Your Land Or Your Life written by Eddie Howell and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-08-31 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I still remember the day my father pointed to a huge Mesquite tree about a block from my house where I grew up. As we were walking towards town, he stopped and told me that when he was about twelve years old he found a man hanging from that particular tree. He told me he ran home and brought his dad and a neighbor. I asked him who had done it. He told me that the Texas Rangers had hung him. I was about eight years old. He also told me that I was too young to understand those things but that I would when I got older. As I got older, I continued to hear stories that were similar and then I understood the horror and injustice. Before I die, I feel obligated to share the truth hidden from our history books. I dedicate this short novel in memory of the victims of greedy land grabbers and evil Texas Rangers who committed the atrocities. This story may be categorized as a short novel and fiction. So be it. It is, however, a story of the horrific acts of bigotry, greed, and murder committed in South Texas. May we all follow God's Golden Rule; God Bless

Book Rangers and Sovereignty

Download or read book Rangers and Sovereignty written by Dan W. Roberts and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1914 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: D. W. Roberts was born in the State of Mississippi, in Winston County, October 10th, 1841. His father, Alexander Roberts, came to Texas in 1836, and helped the Texans fight the battles of the Republic for nearly four years, being in many engagements with the enemy, the most noted of which was the Plum Creek fight, which has gone into the history of Texas. Soon after the Plum Creek fight, my mother prevailed on father to take his family to some place of safety, firmly believing that wholesale murder would be their fate: (Father's judgment was waived) and her love of family won her cause, and they went back to Mississippi in 1839. During their stay in Mississippi, I was born, making that State my native soil, but father's love for Texas had never subsided, and his turn came to persuade mother back to Texas, where he joined his old comrades again in 1843. I was about two years old when they returned to Texas. My father followed up the frontier, and I was reared, and almost rocked in the cradle of Texas warfare. When I was a small boy, I developed some very peculiar traits of character, not peculiarly good, but rather strangely peculiar. We were fond of dwelling alone, to commune with Nature's beautiful work. I had my favorite pecan trees, and would conceal myself under them, to hear the crows murmur to each other, while they were gathering the splendid nuts. My father's recital of early Texas battles had imbued me with the spirit, that those old Texans were the rightful lords of that grand and new republic, and that their heroism should be sustained, and when I grew to be a man, that I would devote my life to the cause that my father so loved. In my boyish dreams I was always in command of men. My education was limited to the common English branches. As I grew to manhood, I could see that war should not be our occupation, but the constant raids of savage foes upon Texas, gave us the field that our more youthful days had pictured for us. We were "put in command of men," and our stewardship will follow. Our work was more preparatory for civil government, consequently we were never a politician, but always adhered to democratic principles.
