Book excerpt: "[The report] finds that supervision -– probation and parole -– drives high numbers of people, disproportionately those who are Black and brown, right back to jail or prison, while in large part failing to help them get needed services and resources. In states examined in the report, people are often incarcerated for violating the rules of their supervision or for low-level crimes, and receive disproportionate punishment following proceedings that fail to adequately protect their fair trial rights."--Publisher website.

Book A Frame Analysis of Probation and Parole Officer Attitudes and Perceptions of Reentrants

Download or read book A Frame Analysis of Probation and Parole Officer Attitudes and Perceptions of Reentrants written by Elizabeth Mele'ana Puloka and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The excessive rates of incarceration and recidivism in the United States reflect a corrections system largely failing to successfully supervise and transition a growing number of ex-offenders released into the community on probation or parole. Research has identified probation and parole officers as significant factors for reentry success, and has examined the role that they play in the reentry process. This thesis uses frame analysis to explore the question of how community correctional officers form attitudes and opinions of their reentering clients and how those perceptions constrain their supervisory decisions. My research presents an analysis of the primary frames that probation and parole officers use when discussing their clients and when explaining their role in the corrections system.

Book Professional Lives of Community Corrections Officers The Invisible Side of Reentry

Download or read book Professional Lives of Community Corrections Officers The Invisible Side of Reentry written by Faith E. Lutze and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2013-11-07 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the first contemporary works to bring together research focused on community corrections officers, Professional Lives of Community Corrections Officers: The Invisible Side of Reentry, by Faith E. Lutze, helps readers understand the importance of community corrections officers to the success of the criminal justice system. The author brings the important work of these officers out from the shadows of the prison and into the light of informed policymaking, demonstrating how their work connects to the broader political, economic, and social context. Arguing that they are "street-level boundary spanners" who are in the best position to lead effective reentry initiatives built on interagency collaboration, the author shows how community corrections officers can effectively lead a fluid response to reentry that is inclusive of control, support, and treatment. This supplement is ideal for community corrections or probation and parole courses to supplement core textbooks.

Book Understanding Penal Practice

Download or read book Understanding Penal Practice written by Ioan Durnescu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-30 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Criminological and penological scholarship has in recent years explored how and why institutions and systems of punishment change – and how and why these changes differ in different contexts. Important though these analyses are, this book focuses not so much on the changing nature of institutions and systems, but rather the changing nature of penal practice and practitioners Bringing together leading researchers from around the world, this collection unites studies that aim to describe and critically analyse penal practice with studies that investigate its effectiveness and prescribe its future development. Reversing penology’s usual preoccupation with the prison, the book focuses mainly on penal practice in the community (i.e. on probation, parole, offender supervision and ‘community corrections’). The first part of the book focuses on understanding practice and practitioners, exploring how changing social, cultural, political, and organisational contexts influence practice, and how training, development, professional socialisation and other factors influence practitioners. The second part is concerned with how practitioners can be best supported to develop the skills and approaches that seem most likely to generate positive impacts. It contains accounts of new practice models and approaches, as well as reports of research projects seeking both to discover and to encourage effective practices. This book explores internationally significant and cutting-edge theoretical and empirical work on the cultures, practices, roles and impacts of frontline practitioners in delivering penal sanctions. As such, it will be of interest to researchers in criminology, social work and social policy as well as correctional policy makers and those involved in community supervision.

Book Education Based Incarceration and Recidivism

Download or read book Education Based Incarceration and Recidivism written by Anthony H. Normore and published by IAP. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Education-Based Incarceration and Recidivism: The Ultimate Social Justice Crime Fighting Tool takes a penetrating look at the needs and challenges of society's disenfranchised jail populations. It is incumbent to encourage public awareness of the causes that underlie the destructive cycles plaguing these populations, including the abuse and neglect that cycle through generations. When effectively addressed through education the economic burden on society is lightened and an advocacy to increase understanding engenders a humane response. When connecting education-based incarceration to leadership and social justice, several issues come to mind, beginning with the universal understanding that definitions of social justice are based on a variety of factors, like political orientation, religious background, and political and social philosophy. An increased body of researchers in educational leadership, ethics, law, sociology, corrections, law enforcement, criminal justice, and public health agree that social justice is concerned with equal justice, not just in the courts, but in all aspects of society. Social justice demands that people promote a just society where people have equal rights and opportunities; everyone, from the poorest person on the margins of society to the wealthiest deserves an even playing field. The intended audience for this book includes academics, national and international law enforcement agencies, and correctional institutions interested in establishing and assessing the effectiveness of an education-based incarceration program. This book can be used by educators and students interested in studying organizational leadership, correctional theory, recidivism, social and restorative justice, and education-based incarceration.
