Book excerpt: "Covering 825,000 acres in the Coastal Plain and Brush Country of South Texas, King Ranch, established in 1853, looms large in Texas and American history. Since its founding by the energetic and visionary Richard King, it has indelibly captured for generations the essence of the American West. As Tom Lea asserted in his epic 1953 history, the spirit of the place "is alive in the land itself, in the far quietness of growing grass and grazing herds." In King Ranch: A Legacy in Art, editors Bob Kinnan, William E. Reaves, and Linda J. Reaves have assembled a team of collaborators to present a beautiful, informative account of the ranch and its place in the artistic heritage of the region. Pairing original paintings by artist Noe Perez with insightful essays from curators Bruce Shackelford and Ron Tyler, this book celebrates the many ways 'King Ranch culture' has enriched appreciation for the decorative, practical, and fine arts in Texas and the greater American West. Opening with a foreword by Jamey Clement, current chair of the board for King Ranch, Inc., and continuing with a brief introduction to the ranch's history by Bob Kinnan, King Ranch: A Legacy in Art will heighten appreciation of the natural beauty and artistic influence of this legendary place. BOB KINNAN previously managed the Santa Gertrudis Heritage Society and King Ranch Archives and has been King Ranch Historian since 2016. WILLIAM E. REAVES is the author of Texas Art and a Wildcatter's Dream, coauthor for Of Texas Rivers and Texas Art, and coeditor of Sense of Home: The Art of Richard Stout. LINDA J. REAVES is coeditor of Sense of Home: The Art of Richard Stout and coauthor of A Book Maker's Art: The Bond of Arts and Letters at Texas A&M University Press"--

Book La Belle the Ship That Changed History

Download or read book La Belle the Ship That Changed History written by Bullock Texas State History Museum and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2014-11-01 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After two decades of searching for La Salle’s lost ship La Belle, Texas Historical Commission (THC) divers in 1995 located a shipwreck containing historic artifacts of European origin in the silty bottom of Matagorda Bay, off the coast of Texas. The first cannon lifted from the waters bore late seventeenth-century French insignias. The ill-fated La Belle had been found. Under the direction of then-THC Archeology Division Director James Bruseth, the THC conducted a full excavation of the water-logged La Belle. The conservation was subsequently completed at Texas A&M University’s Conservation Research Laboratory, resulting in preservation of more than one million artifacts from the wreck. An official naval vessel granted to La Salle by the king of France in 1684, La Belle is still considered a sovereign naval vessel belonging to the French government under international maritime law. A formal agreement negotiated by the French Republic, the Musée national de la Marine, the US Department of State, and the THC allows the ship and artifacts to remain in Texas permanently and to be housed in an exhibit at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin, opening October 2014. This richly illustrated catalog will accompany the exhibit.

Book Tejano Experience

Download or read book Tejano Experience written by Robert Saldaña and published by . This book was released on 2021-08-17 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tejanos make up a subculture within the Hispanic and Latino communities with whom they share many commonalities. But Tejanos have many of their own unique cultural and family traditions which set them apart. Their ancestral roots run very deep in Native American, Spanish, Mexican, Texan, and U.S American History. Unfortunately, because their history is often overlooked by American scholastic curriculums, too many Tejanos (including the author) have simply grown up unaware of much of it. As for the author himself, having essentially known only one of his grandparents, he also had limited knowledge of his own family history. For these reasons, he decided to write this book. Tejano Experience is a case study in Spanish-American and Mexican-American genealogy which resulted from the author's efforts to learn more about himself, his family, and his fellow Tejanos. It tells the stories of his maternal grandfather, Celestino Olivares Garza and his extended Garza and Olivares Families, by embellishing their stories with historical context. Having received land grants from Spanish Royalty on both sides of the Rio Grande River in the 18th Century, these families were some of the earliest pioneers and settlers of South Texas before the American Revolution ever happened. Many of the descendants of these families have resided in deep South Texas for over 140 years and remain there to this very day!Although the subject matter of this book is primarily genealogical in nature, it also offers an introductory glimpse into the history of South Texas and how its Tejano residents lived through and adapted to the challenges and changes that have occurred in this part of Texas over time. Furthermore, the stories of the families in this book are very representative of thousands of other Tejano family stories from South Texas. The author hopes that these stories will inspire others to discover more about (and record) their own respective family histories, and that this work might serve as a "how to" book for those desiring to do so.

Download or read book Ghost Galleon written by Edward Von der Porten and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2019-10-14 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ghost Galleon tells the story of archaeologists’ twenty-year search on a desolate beach in Baja California for the enigmatic remains of a Spanish galleon that disappeared without a trace more than four centuries ago. Carrying a cargo of Asian riches to the New World, Manila galleons forged the final link in the unification of the world through commerce by their annual voyages across the Pacific Ocean. Here, author Edward Von der Porten relates how a chance viewing of Chinese porcelain sherds in a museum catalog led him, his wife Saryl, and a team of researchers to the beachcombers who discovered the sherds. To Von der Porten, these sherds represented the possibility of something much more significant: one of the earliest known Manila galleon shipwrecks on the West Coast. In collaboration with the National Institute of Anthropology and History of Mexico (INAH), Von der Porten and his colleagues undertook the first of many archaeological expeditions to investigate the site in 1999. Over twenty years, a team of American and Mexican archaeologists recovered thousands of artifacts and concluded that they had located the remains of the cargo from a Spanish galleon—most likely the San Juanillo of 1578. This copiously illustrated, highly accessible work offers an inside view of how archaeologists carefully assemble the evidence that allows scientific reconstruction of past events. Despite the grudging resistance of time, Von der Porten and his colleagues have resurrected the tale of the ill-fated San Juanillo to enrich our understanding and appreciation of the past.

Her father, a carpenter and part-time fossil hunter, taught his children to look for fossils. When her father injured himself and was unable to work, Mary quit school and took up fossil hunting full-time to help support her family, a task that became even more important when her father died, leaving the Annings in debt. At the age of twelve, Mary, with her older brother Joe, found what they believed to be the skeleton of a gigantic crocodile, the Great Croc of the legends. Between dodging her rival fossil hunter the Curiman, and the sheer work of carefully digging out the fossil, Mary took almost a year to excavate what would later be termed the Ichthyosaurus. Mary Anning was uneducated, poor and a woman, but her life’s work of fossil hunting led her to make many discoveries that influenced our understanding of prehistoric creatures and the age of the Earth. In this triumphant novel about scientific discovery, Monica Kulling brings Mary Anning and her world to life for young readers.
