Everybody wins! Old Christmas: When professional chef Casey Gray returns to the southeast Texas town where she grew up, she doesn't expect to feel anything for her former lover Kalin McBride. Book Real Love

Download or read book Real Love written by Homer M Sargent and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2016-01-11 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a Romeo and Juliet, West Side, love story, set in the South. A story of forbidden love between black and white. In the early 1970s the color of a person's skin was the first and most recognizable physical characteristic of an individual living in the Deep South, and it was understood in the society that black and white did not mix. How this young couple managed to survive the explosive racist emotions of those violent days is a tale that must be told! You cannot miss this! Indeed, these two young people never really expected to live to see this story to conclusion. What is truly amazing is the single fact that they managed to survive. The bullets missed their mark. The knives went awry. And the gangs could not discourage this warrior on a mission of love. It is a critical examination of American life and society in Texas. This is an inspiring tale! This story chronicles the history of how two people in love came to be together and stay together--against all odds. The raw emotions of love are exposed as these two young people journeyed through triumphs and tragedies. There was violent opposition at every turn. It was a test of will and fortitude. It is also a comedy that can only be appreciated now, in this day and age. It's a tale of overcoming the odds and winning. Moreover, we are the richer for it, for now we have this amazing story. This story is truly unbelievable, and yet, it happened.

Book The Ahern Home of Texarkana

Download or read book The Ahern Home of Texarkana written by Doris Douglas Davis and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2024-09-02 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focused on an early twentieth-century home in Texarkana, Arkansas, Doris Douglas Davis’s The Ahern Home of Texarkana offers not only a discussion of the architecture of a Classical Revival dwelling but also provides a closely observed account of the material culture and social structures of a particular time and place in the American South. Built in 1905–1906 by Patrick Ahern, who immigrated to the United States from Dungarvan, Ireland, in 1881, the house at 403 Laurel Street was home to Ahern, his wife Mary, their six children, and a variety of descendants for over a century before its acquisition by the Texarkana Museums System in 2011. Today, the house, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, serves as a writing retreat, music center, and venue for historical presentations and educational activities. Based on archival materials, interviews with members of the family and those who knew them, and other research, Davis’s examination of the home and its inhabitants also includes a discussion of the complex relationship between persons of privilege such as the Aherns and the domestic servants, predominantly African American, whose often-arduous work made possible the smooth functioning of the household within its social context in the Jim Crow South. Describing the “fraught” relationships in the South between Black domestic servants and their white employers, Davis presents evidence of “the inevitable despair wrought by inequality and the tremendous capacity of the human heart to love.” This detailed tour of the home, its construction and furnishings, and the socio-historical context of its day-to-day activities provides readers a window of understanding and appreciation that will inform students and scholars of material culture as well as those interested in historical preservation.

Book Coming to Texas

Download or read book Coming to Texas written by Eric Anderson and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000-09-25 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A young Scottish doctor looks back on the unforgettable characters who became his patients in East Texas. Qualified as a doctor only 18 months before, he leaves the security of his medical school, his hospital and his heritage to start a single-handed rural practice in the wilds of Texas—his only resources: his ex-flight attendant, pregnant wife and their year-old baby. They exchanged their city sophistication for a rustic life, their temperate climate for the appalling heat and humidity of Texas, and their culture and language for a behavior and speech based on one of America's last frontiers. Deceived by those who invited them to American and left briefly penniless; befriended by a nearby village without medical help and miles from a hospital, they cared for their new patients, covering, in an old Ford with a hole in the floor, a house-call area larger than New Hampshire and Rhode Island combined. Like their patients, they survived. Because they had each other.
