Book excerpt: The myths of the Norse god Thor were preserved in the Icelandic Eddas, set down in the early Middle Ages. The bane of giants and trolls, Thor was worshipped as the last line of defence against all that threatened early Nordic society. Thor's significance persisted long after the Christian conversion and, in the mid-eighteenth century, Thor resumed a symbolic prominence among northern countries. Admired and adopted in Scandinavia and Germany, he became central to the rhetoric of national romanticism and to more belligerent assertions of nationalism. Resurrected in the latter part of the twentieth century in Marvel Magazine, Thor was further transformed into an articulation both of an anxious male sexuality and of a parallel nervousness regarding American foreign policy. Martin Arnold explores the extraordinary regard in which Thor has been held since medieval times and considers why and how his myth has been adopted, adapted and transformed.

Book The Three Golden Hairs

Download or read book The Three Golden Hairs written by Carolyn Emerick and published by Carolyn Emerick. This book was released on with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: European Fairy Tales Series Vol 6 The Three Golden Hairs" is a fairy tale recorded from Czech storytellers in the 19th century. This book discusses several topics to help shed the historical and mythical insight into this tale. The early history of the Slavic people as well as their conversion to Christianity is explored. The phenomenon called "Dvoeverie," or the Slavic dual faith, is explained. We look at what is known about Slavic myth and how it lingered on in the folk consciousness. Further, the relationship between the ethnic-Germans and the Czechs is mentioned. Elements of Germanic myth found within this tale are overviewed, and differences between the Czech and German variations of the story are highlighted to discuss the evolution of myth and folklore. We will look at the figure of Baba Yaga, and how she makes an appearance in this tale - even though she appears very different here than in other fairy tales. Baba Yaga's origins as an ancient mother goddess is discussed. Other Slavic mythical elements that present in this text are also discussed. Finally, the book ends with the author's retelling of "The Three Golden Hairs." This volume is illustrated throughout.

Book Histories of Nationalism in Ireland and Germany

Download or read book Histories of Nationalism in Ireland and Germany written by Shane Nagle and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-12-15 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the era in which the modern idea of nationalism emerged as a way of establishing the preferred political, cultural, and social order for society, this book demonstrates that across different European societies the most important constituent of nationalism has been a specific understanding of the nation's historical past. Analysing Ireland and Germany, two largely unconnected societies in which the past was peculiarly contemporary in politics and where the meaning of the nation was highly contested, this volume examines how narratives of origins, religion, territory and race produced by historians who were central figures in the cultural and intellectual histories of both countries interacted; it also explores the similarities and differences between the interactions in these societies. Histories of Nationalism in Ireland and Germany investigates whether we can speak of a particular common form of nationalism in Europe. The book draws attention to cultural and intellectual links between the Irish and the Germans during this period, and what this meant for how people in either society understood their national identity in a pivotal time for the development of the historical discipline in Europe. Contributing to a growing body of research on the 'transnationality' of nationalism, this new study of a hitherto-unexplored area will be of interest to historians of modern Germany and Ireland, comparative and transnational historians, and students and scholars of nationalism, as well as those interested in the relationship between biography and writing history.

Book The Norse Myths That Shape the Way We Think

Download or read book The Norse Myths That Shape the Way We Think written by Carolyne Larrington and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 2023-05-23 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fresh look at the stories at the heart of Norse mythology, exploring their cultural impact up to the present day. This brilliantly original and accessible guide explores how Valhalla and its Valkyries have inspired our cultural landscape, from Wagner to the Marvel Universe. Carolyne Larrington’s elegantly written retellings capture the beauty of the original myths, while also delving deeper into the history of their meanings, offering the reader an intelligent and up-to-date take on these powerful stories. A ruggedly handsome blond man swings his huge hammer. Gaunt-faced figures with icicle crowns and frost-rimmed cheekbones march from the north through an endless winter. These strange supernatural figures might sound familiar—and also like creatures of myth and legend. Yet they haven’t stepped straight off the vellum of ancient manuscripts. Rather, these compelling characters are contemporary reimaginings of mythic figures from Old Norse mythology. All speak to our contemporary hopes and fears, bridging the gap between a vanished medieval past and a vibrant, living present. Larrington guides us on an enchanting journey through centuries of heroism, cruelty, and magic, while also exploring how these stories speak to the enduring human condition. This book is for anyone who wants a deeper understanding of Norse mythology and its cultural resonances through the centuries.
