Book excerpt: by fireflies on calling heterospeciflcs (Lloyd 1984) or the location of calling crickets by tachiniid flies (Cade 197 5). Sexual selection theory would predict that if there were any risks involved in mating then the sex offering the highest investment should take fewer of them. Given these factors and an inherent risk of detection by predators of calling individuals, males are more likely to signal than females (Thornhi111979). Further, if the quantity (length and/ or loudness) of the acoustic signal were correlated with the risks of exposure, we may predict that insects calling from exposed perches, or in areas of high predation, would use calls with a low duty cycle (the calls are short and widely spaced in time). Belwood provides an extensive account of defensive strategies used . by tettigoniids in the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. Her discussion includes both cryptic strategies in avoiding day time predators and also signalling strategies avoiding those operating at night As the signal shortens so selection is transferred from the caller to the searching female, and male location may become more risky than calling itself. At this juncture it may be advantageous for the female to call in reply to the male. This role reversal in signalling often results in duetting where the male calls and the female replies within a very narrow time window. The male now searches for the female, taking on both risks of calling and moving.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While we may have always assumed that insects employ auditory communication, our understanding of it has been impeded by various technical challenges. In comparison to the study of an insect's visual and olfactory expression, research in the area of acoustic communication has lagged behind. Filling this void, Insect Sounds and Communication is the

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Novel Aspects of Insect-Plant Interactions Edited by Pedro Barbosa and Deborah Letourneau This volume represents the forefront of two rapidly advancing areas of ecology: three-trophic-level interactions and the interdisciplinary field of chemical ecology The book focuses on the role of microorganisms as mediators of interactions between insects and plants, providing critical appraisal of studies and suggesting ways to integrate competing hypotheses of insect-plant dynamics. 1988 (0 471-83276-6) 362 pp. Arthropod Biological Control Agents and Pesticides Brian A. Croft Examining the effects of pesticides on predators and parasites and exploring methods for reducing negative impacts of pesticide use, this book focuses on the interaction of pesticides with entomophagous arthropods. It surveys the history of research in the field and discusses susceptibility assessment, lethal, sublethal, and ecological effects of pesticides, and selectivity, resistance, and resistance management. 1990 (0 471-81975-1) 723 pp. Lepidopteran Anatomy, John Eaton This single-source treatment on the anatomy of Lepidoptera provides a detailed exposition of its anatomy plus all its life stages, including the larva and adult forms of the exoskeleton, musculature, organ systems, and specialized structures. As the only thorough examination of the morphology of this insect group, it is an essential acquisition for entomologists, morphologists, and insect physiologists. 1988 (1-05862-9) 257 pp. Integrated Pest Management Systems and Cotton Production Edited by Ray Frisbie, Kamal El-Zik, and L. Ted Wilson The most complete and authoritative work available on the subject, this book brings together information on integrated pest management strategies that are applicable to cotton. It addresses economic, agronomic, and biological factors of pest management and focuses on plant resistance to pests and the genetic rationale for improving plant health. 1989 (0 471-81782-1) 437 pp.

Book Recent Freshwater Ostracods of the World

Download or read book Recent Freshwater Ostracods of the World written by Ivana Karanovic and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-05 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Their story began 500 million years ago, but we only started to get to know them in 1746, when Linné described the first ostracod species. Vividly portraying the freshwater ostracods, this comprehensive reference work gathers the knowledge gained during some 250 years, but which to date has remained scattered throughout the literature. It starts with an introduction to the class Ostracoda with a special focus on freshwater ostracods and highlights practical methods in their study. The systematic part includes an introduction to all families; identification keys for all subfamilies, genera and species; diagnoses for each subfamily and genus; and lists of synonyms and distribution of species. The text is richly illustrated with distribution maps, line drawings of key generic characteristics, and numerous SEM photographs. Serving as an excellent starting point for all further research on freshwater ostracods, it can be widely used not only by ostracodologists, but also by crustaceologists, evolutionists and ecologists.

Book Locust

  • Pages : 322 pages

Download or read book Locust written by Jeffrey A. Lockwood and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2009-04-28 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the nineteenth century, swarms of locusts regularly swept across the continent, turning noon into dusk, demolishing farm communities, and bringing trains to a halt as the crushed bodies of insects greased the rails. In 1876, the U.S. Congress declared the locust "the single greatest impediment to the settlement of the country." From the Dakotas to Texas, from California to Iowa, the swarms pushed thousands of settlers to the brink of starvation, prompting the federal government to enlist some of the greatest scientific minds of the day and thereby jumpstarting the fledgling science of entomology. Over the next few decades, the Rocky Mountain locust suddenly -- and mysteriously -- vanished. A century later, Jeffrey Lockwood set out to discover why. Unconvinced by the reigning theories, he searched for new evidence in musty books, crumbling maps, and crevassed glaciers, eventually piecing together the elusive answer: A group of early settlers unwittingly destroyed the locust's sanctuaries just as the insect was experiencing a natural population crash. Drawing on historical accounts and modern science, Locust brings to life the cultural, economic, and political forces at work in America in the late-nineteenth century, even as it solves one of the greatest ecological mysteries of our time.
