Book Testing the Ge Detectors for the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR

Download or read book Testing the Ge Detectors for the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High purity germanium (HPGe) crystals will be used for the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR, where they serve as both the source and the detector for neutrinoless double beta decay. It is crucial for the experiment to understand the performance of the HPGe crystals. A variety of crystal properties are being investigated, including basic properties such as energy resolution, efficiency, uniformity, capacitance, leakage current and crystal axis orientation, as well as more sophisticated properties, e.g. pulse shapes and dead layer and transition layer distributions. In this talk, we will present our measurements that characterize the HPGe crystals. We will also discuss the our simulation package for the detector characterization setup, and show that additional information can be extracted from data-simulation comparisons.

Book High Voltage Testing for the Majorana Demonstrator

Download or read book High Voltage Testing for the Majorana Demonstrator written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Majorana Collaboration is constructing the Majorana Demonstrator, an ultra-low background, 44-kg modular high-purity Ge (HPGe) detector array to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay in 76Ge. The phenomenon of surface micro-discharge induced by high-voltage has been studied in the context of the Majorana Demonstrator. This effect can damage the front-end electronics or mimic detector signals. To ensure the correct performance, every high-voltage cable and feedthrough must be capable of supplying HPGe detector operating voltages as high as 5 kV without exhibiting discharge. R & D measurements were carried out to understand the testing system and determine the optimum design configuration of the high-voltage path, including different improvements of the cable layout and feedthrough flange model selection. Every cable and feedthrough to be used at the Majorana Demonstrator was characterized and the micro-discharge effects during the Majorana Demonstrator commissioning phase were studied. Furthermore, a stable configuration has been achieved, and the cables and connectors can supply HPGe detector operating voltages without exhibiting discharge.

Book Analysis Techniques for Background Rejection at the Majorana Demonstrator

Download or read book Analysis Techniques for Background Rejection at the Majorana Demonstrator written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The MAJORANA Collaboration is constructing the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR, an ultra-low background, 40-kg modular HPGe detector array to search for neutrinoless double beta decay in 76Ge. In view of the next generation of tonne-scale Ge-based 0[nu][beta][beta]-decay searches that will probe the neutrino mass scale in the inverted-hierarchy region, a major goal of the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR is to demonstrate a path forward to achieving a background rate at or below 1 count/tonne/year in the 4 keV region of interest around the Q-value at 2039 keV. The background rejection techniques to be applied to the data include cuts based on data reduction, pulse shape analysis, event coincidences, and time correlations. The Point Contact design of the DEMONSTRATOR's germanium detectors allows for significant reduction of gamma background.

Book Low Background Signal Readout Electronics for the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR

Download or read book Low Background Signal Readout Electronics for the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR is a planned 40 kg array of Germanium detectors intended to demonstrate the feasibility of constructing a tonne-scale experiment that will seek neutrinoless double beta decay (0 nu beta beta) in Ge-76. Such an experiment would require backgrounds of less than 1 count/tonne-year in the 4 keV region of interest around the 2039 keV Q-value of the beta beta decay. Designing low-noise electronics, which must be placed in close proximity to the detectors, presents a challenge to reaching this background target. This paper will discuss the MAJORANA collaboration's solutions to some of these challenges.

Book Searching for Neutrinoless Double beta Decay of Germanium 76 in the Presence of Backgrounds

Download or read book Searching for Neutrinoless Double beta Decay of Germanium 76 in the Presence of Backgrounds written by Alexis G. Schubert and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The neutrino, an elementary particle, has been the subject of experimental investigation for over 50 years. Recent experiments have shown that neutrinos have mass and oscillate, but questions about fundamental properties of the neutrino remain. The observation of neutrinoless double-beta decay could determine whether lepton number is violated, discover whether the neutrino is its own antiparticle, and provide information about the absolute scale of neutrino mass. The MAJORANA Collaboration will search for neutrinoless double-beta decay of germanium-76 in an array of germanium detectors. Previous experiments indicate that the half life of this decay mode is greater than 1025 years. To be sensitive to this rate, MAJORANA must construct an ultra-low-background detector. MAJORANA is building the DEMONSTRATOR, a 40-kg detector array, at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota. The neutrinoless double-beta decay of 76-Ge would produce 76-Se and two electrons with 2039 keV of energy. The physics reach of the DEMONSTRATOR will be determined by the background count rate in a 4-keV energy region surrounding the 2039-keV Q-value. MAJORANA has a background goal of less than three counts in the energy region of interest per tonne-year of DEMONSTRATOR exposure. Projections of the DEMONSTRATOR's sensitivity are determined from a background energy-spectrum model based on material assay data and Monte Carlo simulation results. Understanding and minimization of backgrounds is critical to the success of the DEMONSTRATOR. MAJORANA Collaborators operate a low-background detector in a shielded environment at the Kimballton Underground Research Facility near Ripplemeade, Virginia. The contents of the detector cryostat are well known, making it a good candidate for testing the MAJORANA background model. This dissertation describes the creation of a background energy- spectrum model for the Kimballton detector. Energy spectra measured with the detector at Kimballton are compared to results of the background model, and implications for the DEMONSTRATOR are explored.

This book was released on 2018-10-02 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nomographs for Use in the Fabrication and Testing of Ge (Li) Detectors During the fabrication of ge(li) detectors and in their testing, the need often arises to compare various sets of parameters or to estimate certain quantities from experimental data. By using nomo graphs, the need for repetitive or relatively complicated calculations can often be eliminated. To this end, nomographs relating the most commonly used detector parameters were constructed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Compton Suppression Tests on Ge and BGO Prototype Detectors for Gammasphere

Download or read book Compton Suppression Tests on Ge and BGO Prototype Detectors for Gammasphere written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last decade the application of arrays of 10--30 Compton Suppressed germanium (CSG) detectors in the field of [gamma]-ray spectroscopy has led to a number of significant advances in studies of nuclear structure. Despite the success of these instruments, most of them are limited to detecting two-fold (and in a few cases three-fold) coincidences from highmultiplicity cascades. To increase the detection sensitivity for weak cascades, proposals have recently emerged for construction of much larger arrays. In the USA, the proposed array, called GAMMASPHERE, is to have 110 large CSG detectors which will subtend a solid angle of almost 2[pi] steradians, sufficient to permit routine acquisition of up to 5-fold coincidences from high-multiplicity cascades. This together with other improvements, will yield a resolving power several orders of magnitude greater than currents arrays. In Europe, an array of similar size and power, called EUROGAM, is currently being constructed. In this paper, we report on measurements of the Compton suppression and overall P/T ratio of two Ge detectors in a BGO shield of the honeycomb pattern. These were the first prototype CSG detector assemblies for GAMMASPHERE.
