Book Testing and Simulation of Laminated Composites Subjected to Impact Loading

Download or read book Testing and Simulation of Laminated Composites Subjected to Impact Loading written by X. Dang and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because composite laminates are very susceptible to impact loading even at low velocity, low-velocity impact is an important subject in laminated composite analysis. The impact-induced damage is usually invisible to the naked eye and can cause serious structural degradation. Many low-velocity impact tests were performed in previous studies; however, most were phenomenological analysis. In an effort to further understand the responses of composite laminates under low-velocity impact and to develop an accurate and efficient quantitative simulation in the future, this study was aimed at performing instrumented impact tests and computer simulations. A commonly used computer code--LS-DYNA3D--was evaluated in this study, and the results are valuable for future development of a new computer code. In the study, a low-velocity impact event investigated by Sun and Chen with an indentation law and verified by experiments was used to justify the finite element model and contact parameters. Once the computational scheme was established, it was used for a broader investigation consisting of composite laminates with various thicknesses, fiber angles, and impact velocities. Computational results revealed that the peak contact force and maximum deflection were strongly affected by the thickness of composite laminates, while the fiber angles investigated seemed to play a less significant role. In addition, it was concluded that because delamination modeling was not included in the LS-DYNA3D, the computer code needed to be modified if it was to be used for accurate impact simulations.

Book Dynamic Failure of Composite and Sandwich Structures

Download or read book Dynamic Failure of Composite and Sandwich Structures written by Serge Abrate and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-11-02 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a broad view of the current state of the art regarding the dynamic response of composite and sandwich structures subjected to impacts and explosions. Each chapter combines a thorough assessment of the literature with original contributions made by the authors. The first section deals with fluid-structure interactions in marine structures. The first chapter focuses on hull slamming and particularly cases in which the deformation of the structure affects the motion of the fluid during the water entry of flexible hulls. Chapter 2 presents an extensive series of tests underwater and in the air to determine the effects of explosions on composite and sandwich structures. Full-scale structures were subjected to significant explosive charges, and such results are extremely rare in the open literature. Chapter 3 describes a simple geometrical theory of diffraction for describing the interaction of an underwater blast wave with submerged structures. The second section addresses the problem of impact on laminated composite structures with chapters devoted to ballistic impacts on pre-stressed composite structures, tests developed to simulate dynamic failure in marine structures, damage mechanisms and energy absorption in low velocity impacts, perforation, the numerical simulation of intra and inter-ply damage during impact, and hail impact on laminated composites. Sandwich structures with laminated facings are considered in Section 3 with chapters dealing with the discrete modeling of honeycomb core during the indentation of sandwich structures, the behavior of fold core sandwich structures during impact, and impact on helicopter blades. The fourth section consists of two chapters presenting experimental results and numerical simulation of composite structures subjected to crash. This volume is intended for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, and engineers interested and involved in analysis and design of composite structures.

Book Residual Strength Characterization of Laminated Composites Subjected to Impact Loading

Download or read book Residual Strength Characterization of Laminated Composites Subjected to Impact Loading written by GE. Husman and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analogy between damage inflicted by a single-point hard-particle impact and damage inflicted by inserting a flaw of known dimensions in a static tensile coupon is discussed. The results suggest that residual strength can be predicted as a function of kinetic energy of impact by executing two experiments, a static tension test on an unflawed specimen and a static tension test on a coupon previously subjected to a single-point impact. The model appears to be accurate for impact velocities which are less than the penetration velocity. For velocities above complete penetration, the residual strength is identical to the static strength of a coupon with a hole having the same diameter as the impacting particle. Comparison of various materials indicates that the impact strength of composite materials is strongly influenced by the strain energy to failure of the reinforcement.

Book Stress Concentrations in Laminated Composites

Download or read book Stress Concentrations in Laminated Composites written by Seng C. Tan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Author's PrefaceThe objective of this book is to provide a thorough and systematic study of the problem of laminated composites containing stress concentrations. Stress concentrations are introduced in laminated plates in the forms of circular holes, elliptical openings and straight cracks. These forms of cutouts have many practical applications, and are familiar to most engineers. Stress concentrations exist in all known structural components. Stress concentrations have great practical importance because they are normally the cause of failure. In addition to stress analyses of laminated composites, we need more fundamental understanding of the failure mode, the failure criterion, the effects on global laminate response, and the design of composites in the presence of stress concentrations. In this book, all the subjects studied are closely related to the problem of stress concentrations in laminated composites . . . . All the models are verified with many experimental results. The underlying objective of this comprehensive study is to give the readers an in-depth and thorough understanding of the problem of stress concentrations in composites. This book is the first to address the problem of laminated composites containing stress concentrations in a systematic way.

Book Fatigue impact Studies in Laminated Composites

Download or read book Fatigue impact Studies in Laminated Composites written by V. Sarma Avva and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The residual strength of the impact-damaged laminates can be predicted using an analytical model. Both the power law and the wearout models appear to be useful in predicting the fatigue life of the composite laminates. However, because of the slope parameter, the wearout model appears to have a slight edge over the power law model, particularly at low fatigue life and higher applied stress. The strength degradation due to cyclic loading in notched laminates was found to be extremely small up to a million cycles. The residual strength of the fatigue-damaged laminates was found to increase (in proportion to the applied maximum stress with R = 0.1) after a million fatigue cycles. Impact loading followed by cyclic loading was found to be more damaging (in reducing the life of the laminate) than the reversed sequence of loading. The magnitude of the minimum projectile velocity causing catastrophic failure in the laminates tested was found as a function of the applied stress and the number of fatigue cycles.

Book The Virtual Crack Closure Technique History Approach and Applications

Download or read book The Virtual Crack Closure Technique History Approach and Applications written by Ronald Krueger and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An overview of the virtual crack closure technique is presented. The approach used is discussed, the history summarized, and insight into its applications provided. Equations for two-dimensional quadrilateral elements with linear and quadratic shape functions are given. Formula for applying the technique in conjuction with three-dimensional solid elements as well as plate/shell elements are also provided. Necessary modifications for the use of the method with geometrically nonlinear finite element analysis and corrections required for elements at the crack tip with different lengths and widths are discussed. The problems associated with cracks or delaminations propagating between different materials are mentioned briefly, as well as a strategy to minimize these problems. Due to an increased interest in using a fracture mechanics based approach to assess the damage tolerance of composite structures in the design phase and during certification, the engineering problems selected as examples and given as references focus on the application of the technique to components made of composite materials.
