Book Dutch and Flemish Flower Pieces 2 vols in case

Download or read book Dutch and Flemish Flower Pieces 2 vols in case written by Sam Segal and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-09-25 with total page 1266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This richly illustrated book provides an overview of all known Dutch and Flemish artists up to the nineteenth century who painted or drew flower pieces, or else made prints of them. Unlike many mainstream art historical studies, the book takes a truly comprehensive approach, including cases where only a single example is known or even if nothing of the artist’s other work appears to have survived. Containing highly instructive lists identifying the names of flowers, as well as insects and other animals, the book also discusses the earliest depictions of flower still life and the distinctive characteristics behind the development of floral arrangements in different periods, including the variation of the flowers, the variety of techniques used by artists, as well as an exploration of the symbolism behind the numerous plant and animal species this form of art portrays. Composed in Dutch, the text was translated into English by Judith Deitch and edited by Philip Kelleway. Publication of this book was made possible thanks to generous support of: • Dr. med. Bettina Leysen • Rose-Marie and Eijk van Otterloo and the Center for Netherlandish Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston With additional support of the M.A.O.C. Gravin van Bylandt Stichting. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first complete study of the life and work of the 17th century Dutch painter Pieter Codde (1599-1678). Alongside Rembrandt, Codde was active in Amsterdam, the largest and busiest city of the Netherlands. Codde belonged to the first generation of painters who took part in the cultural phenomenon known as the Dutch Golden Age and therefore this monograph makes a significant contribution to our understanding of the early stages of development of the Dutch school of painting and its influence on later developments. The book includes a biography of the painter as well as a systematic and comparative iconographical and stylistic study of his work with an attached extensive critical oeuvre catalogue. This book is an important tool for both art enthusiasts and collectors as well as art professionals such as students, scholars, auctioneers and art dealers.

A prolific master whose known paintings number over one hundred, Schut achieved considerable succes during his lifetime. This study sets Schut's life and career within the context of the artistic and cultural milieu of his time, defining his role in the emergence of a new style after the death of Rubens in 1640, and considers his impact on future generations. A workable chronology for Schut's paintings is established through an analysis of style, iconography and patronage, taking into account past scholarship. The artists's working methods and studio practices and his output in other media are also discussed. A separate chapter is devoted to the numerous graland pictures he executed in collaboration with the Jesuit flower painter Daniel Seghers. A complete catalogue raisonne of Schut's paintings, the first of its kind, is presented.

Book Still life Paintings from the Netherlands 1550 1720

Download or read book Still life Paintings from the Netherlands 1550 1720 written by Alan Chong and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This stunning book presents the very best still lifes produced in the Netherlands at the height of the genre, from the early beginnings in the 16th century, with Pieter Aertsen and Joachim Beuckelaer, to the late highlights in the 18th century, with Rachel Ruysch and Jan van Huysum. Despite the popularity and abundance of flower paintings in modern collections, the book includes a wide range of subjects and styles, from the simple to the complex, the charmingly small to the opulent and extravagant, and from flowers to hunting still lifes or objects in the corner of a painter's studio, along with an occasional trompe l'oeil. The visual delights of still-life painting have a strong historical context. Collectors and connoisseurs purchased them because of their realism, visual appeal, and relevance to their own lives. Poets praised the wonders of still-life paintings and evoked the power of painting to transcend the seasons and the passing of time. Contemporary observers lauded the expensive and elaborate objects often on display. The book therefore considers the visual achievement of the Netherlandish still life painters in the context of contemporary reactions to pictures, art theory, and issues of patronage. Numerous artists were tempted to try their hand at still life, drawn by a new and enchanting genre that allowed an artist to create independent worlds of inanimate objects on the flat surface of a picture -- imaginary realms that had an exceptional following among connoisseurs of the time. These images continue to work their magic on present-day art lovers.

Book Seventeenth Century Dutch and Flemish Painting

Download or read book Seventeenth Century Dutch and Flemish Painting written by Ivan Gaskell and published by Philip Wilson Publishers, Limited. This book was released on 1990 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A catalogue of 128 paintings produced during this period in which the art of portraiture was transformed, religious imagery dynamized, and new genres such as flower painting were established. The art of Holland's Golden Age is perennially popular with collectors and gallery visitors alike and this book provides a new insight into this unique private collection. In his introduction Ivan Gaskill considers the extremely varied character of Dutch and Flemsih seventeenth century art. It ranges from minutely observed scens of everyday life to portraits, religious works and intimate still-life compositions. The Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection is especially rich in landscapes, a subject which had emerged as a seperate genre in the Netherlands in the previous century. The author outlines the development of painting on both sides of the border, placing it in its social and historical context, and goes on to discuss the taste for Dutch and Flemish art from the seventeenth century to the present day and spotlights some of the earlier collectors. This detailed catalogue of 128 paintings is the result of meticulous researchin British, Dutch and American libraries and archives. The entries are arranged in ten groups by subject so that thematic similarities can be conveniently examined. Amongst the most celebrated works is Frans Hal's monumental "Family Portrait" - once the most expensive painting in the world. All the paintings are illustrated in colour and are accompanied by comparative illustrations and technical photographs.
