Wenger (1910-1995) was a teacher of Historical Theology in the Goshen Biblical Seminary, a seminary, a member school of the Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminaries, Elkhart, Indiana. Born on December 25, 1910, at Honey Brook, Pennsylvania, he is a son of the Lancaster Conference, but he removed with his parents to Bucks County, Pennsylvania, as a boy, and was later baptized in the Rockhill congregation of the Franconia Conference. He studied at Eastern Mennonite and Goshen colleges, and holds degrees from both American and European universities. He was ordained successively as a deacon (1943), a minister (1944), and a bishop (1951) in the Mennonite Church, and served on the executive committees of both the district and general conferences, as well as on the Presidium of the Mennonite World Conference. He was also a member of the executive committee of the Mennonite Historical Society and of the Institute of Mennonite Studies. He taught at Union Biblical Seminary in Indian and at Eastern Mennonite Seminary in Virginia. He also served on the editorial boards of the Mennonite Quarterly Review and of the book series Studies in Anabaptist and Mennonite History, as well as The Mennonite Encyclopedia. He was a member of the Committee on Bible Translation, which prepared the new International version of the Bible. He was deeply concerned to seen his church seek renewal and greater faithfulness to Christ and His Word. Book jacket.

Indeed, most of them would argue that the Gospel writer, Matthew, spells out very clearly the meaning of the term in the Great Commission (Matt 28:16–20) by utilizing three key words, viz., “go[ing],” “baptizing,” and “teaching.” This point of view is the result of centuries of scholarly opinion that has looked primarily, if not solely, to these three adjacent participles of “make disciples” (Matt 28:19), and not to the entire Gospel of Matthew, for the meaning of the command. This book does not suggest that “going,” “baptizing,” and “teaching” are not to be considered in determining the essence of Christian disciple-making. Rather, it contends that the three terms should not be our only source of meaning. This problem is tackled herein by demonstrating that Matthew establishes a framework within the Great Commission itself that points to a fuller meaning of “make disciples” in the broader context of his Gospel, and that the Gospel writer expects his reader to draw on his entire Gospel to grasp the full meaning of this important command.

Moreover, historical theology is characterized by the methodological presupposition that, unless good reason exists to think otherwise, the theological accounts of the ancient church articulate the genuine beliefs of their authors. The significance of this volume lies in the methodological definition it offers. The strength of this volume lies in the fact that its definition of the historical method of studying theology is not the work of a single mind but that of over twenty respected scholars, many of whom are leaders in the field. Edwards presents a survey of theological applications of the term Logos in Greek, Jewish and Christian thought from Plato to Augustine and Proclus. Special focus is placed on: the relation of words to images in representation of divine realm, the relation between the logos within (reason) and the logos without (speech) both in linguistics and in Christology, the relation between the incarnate Word and the written text, and the place of reason in the interpretation of revelation. Bringing together materials which are rarely synthesized in modern study, this book shows how Greek and biblical thought part company in their appraisal of the capacity of reason to grasp the nature of God, and how in consequence verbal revelation plays a more significant role in biblical teaching. Edwards shows how this entailed the rejection of images in Jewish and Christian thought, and how the manifestation in flesh of Christ as the living word of God compelled the church to reconsider both the relation of word to image and the interplay between the logos within and the written logos in the formulation of Christian doctrine.

Montanism, in the post-Constantinian era, was also persecuted by Christian emperors.
