In clear and graceful prose, Simmons traces chronological and regional differences within this land of immense environmental contrasts—woodland, steppe, and desert. He argues that the Neolithic Revolution can be seen in a variety of economic, demographic, and social guises and that it lacked a single common stimulus. Each chapter includes sections on history, terminology, geographic range, specific domesticated species, the composition of early villages and households, and the development of social, symbolic, and religious behavior. Most chapters include at least one case study and conclude with a concise summary. Book excerpt: In the Neolithic Near East, the Anatolian landmass of modern day Turkey functioned as an over reaching land bridge, connecting the three continents of Europe, Asia and Africa to one another. The larger geographical landscape of today's Middle East was surrounded by the five major seas of antiquity. The Mediterranean Sea, the Black Sea, the Persian Gulf, the Red Sea, and the Caspian Sea. The rivers of Tigris and Euphrates ran across the hills, mountain ranges and plains, and volcanic fields of the Armenian highlands provided invaluable obsidian rocks, suitable for making sharp, razor-edged stone tools. As the late Klaus Schmidt once put it, the slopes of the Taurus mountains were a hunter’s dream, and a prime piece of paradise coming true. In this region, humans and the environment were brought so close to one another, and plants and animals appeared so abundant, that the early hunter gatherers scattered across the land for the first time adopted primary storage and conservation methods. The strategies which gave way to the rise of agriculture and domestication of animals in the course of the coming millennia. Göbekli Tepe was at the heart of this cultural and economic transition. Here, the Neolithic Revolution was begun.

Book excerpt: The natural arc of resource-rich land which forms the ‘Fertile Crescent’ of South-West Asia is regarded as the earliest centre of village-based farming in the world and has been the focus of much of our understanding of the transition from Epipalaeolithic hunter-gathers to Neolithic farmers. Beyond the Fertile Crescent is the first volume of the Azraq Project, a large-scale archaeological and palaeoenvironmental survey and excavation project undertaken between 1982 and 1989 in the ecologically diverse sub-region of the Azraq Basin in north-central Jordan: an area rich in Palaeolithic and Neolithic archaeology. Beginning with an overview to the Project aims, a detailed analysis of past and present environments and land use and the history of excavation in the Basin, Beyond the Fertile Crescent explores the geology, stratigraphy and dating of the Late Palaeolithic sites and provides a detailed description of the technology and typology of the lithic assemblages from the sites. These are then compared with those from the wider Levant, in order to explore possible links between technological traditions and social groups in order to understand the evidence for settlement strategies across the region.
