Book Territorial Use Rights and Economic Efficiency

Download or read book Territorial Use Rights and Economic Efficiency written by Ian R. Smith and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 1984 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper discusses the mechanics and implications of municipal concessions in the Philippines which govern the use of municipal waters for fish corrals, oyster culture beds and gathering of milkfish fry. These concessions or territorial use rights are awarded annually by the resource owner (the municipality) to the highest bidder. In the case of milkfish fry gathering, the concessionaire assumes monopsonist rights of first purchase from fry gatherers. The implications of this system for economic efficiency and equity are discussed theoretically with supporting data from milkfish fry concessions in Antique Province. It is concluded that the system increases economic efficiency in resource use and generates significant income for municipalities which they can then redistribute as they see fit, and therefore not necessarily for the special benefit of the fishermen.

Book Territorial Use Rights in Marine Fisheries

Download or read book Territorial Use Rights in Marine Fisheries written by Francis T. Christy and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 1982 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Territorial use rights in fisheries (TURFs) have existed for centuries. They are widely available for sedentary resources. In addition, however, they have appeared in a number of marine fisheries in traditional communities and are also being acquired, legally or extra-legally, for such techniques as floating fish aggregation devices and other forms of fixed gear. TURFs provide interesting opportunities for dealing with two major aspects of fisheries management -efficient production of net benefits and equitable distribution of benefits. Further exploration of the possible adoption of TURFs as a means for management seem desirable. This paper explores some of the definitional elements of TURFs and the distinctions between territorial rights and common property. It also exercises some of the conditions that may have an effect on the creation and maintenance of TURFs. And it discusses briefly some of the implications for equitable distribution of benefits.

Book Resale Price Maintenance and Vertical Territorial Restrictions

Download or read book Resale Price Maintenance and Vertical Territorial Restrictions written by Barbora Jedlicková and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2016-03-25 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theoretical discussions among competition lawyers and economists on the approach to Resale resale Price price Maintenance maintenance (RPM) and Vertical vertical Territorial territorial Restrictions restrictions (VTR) have often caused controversy. However, commentators agree that there is a lack of comprehensive study surrounding the topic. This book explores these two forms of anticompetitive conduct from legal, historical, economical, and theoretical points of view, focusing on the EU and US experiences. The author expertly goes beyond the current legal practice to explain, among other things, what approach should apply to RPM and VTR, and why RPM and VTR are introduced in situations where procompetitive theories would not make economic sense, or do not apply in practice. The book takes account of economic values, such as efficiency and welfare, as well as other values, such as freedom, fairness and free competition. Scholars and students of law will find the book’s depth of legal, economic and historical analysis to be a rich contribution to the scholarship. This book will also be of use to EU and US practitioners, and enforcers dealing with RPM and VTR cases.

Book Report of the FAO Japan Expert Consultation on the Development of Community Based Coastal Fishery Management Systems for Asia and the Pacific Kobe Japan 8 12 June 1992

Download or read book Report of the FAO Japan Expert Consultation on the Development of Community Based Coastal Fishery Management Systems for Asia and the Pacific Kobe Japan 8 12 June 1992 written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Australian Geographic. This book was released on 1993 with total page 1024 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effective management of small-scale fisheries is an extraordinarily difficult task. Community-based approaches to management appear to offer important opportunities in certain situations. Extensive experience of such approaches in Japan provides valuable lessons of both the difficulties and the opportunities for this approach. The Consultation examined these experiences as well as others in the Asia and Pacific region. It identified the critical factors that facilitate or constrain community-based management; it identified guiding principles for the adoption and implementation of such systems; and, it made proposals for short- and long-term projects and programmes to encourage increased use of community-based approaches.
