Book excerpt: In February 2004, Terina Devine is hovering on the edge of her life, confronting her past and praying for inner strength to forgive herself and let go of a choice she was forced to make. Thirty-three years have gone by since then. Yet, even with the passage of time the decision for that choice still continues to destroy her soul. Everyone knows her as "Bitch". She earned the title after the loss of the man she had loved more than her own life. Friends had been worried. They had tried to convince themselves that she was only delusional as a result of the shock of his untimely death, and in due course her gireving would ease, and she would soon return to her happy self. But they had been wrong. To some, Terina was regarded as knowingly insensitive. Others simply thought she had gone mad when her emotions began clouding her better judgement and challenging her heart. When She Dreams is one woman's story, chock full of love, comfort, desire, and a sprinkling of humour. But most importantly, it's a story of how a life can be changed when mental illness, mixed with tragedy, defeats a mind and chills a once warm heart.

Book An Inventory of Archaic and Classical Poleis

Download or read book An Inventory of Archaic and Classical Poleis written by Mogens Herman Hansen and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2004-11-11 with total page 1416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first ever documented study of the 1,035 identifiable Greek city states (poleis) of the Archaic and Classical periods (c.650-325 BC). Previous studies of the Greek polis have focused on Athens and Sparta, and the result has been a view of Greek society dominated by Sophokles', Plato's, and Demosthenes' view of what the polis was. This study includes descriptions of Athens and Sparta, but its main purpose is to explore the history and organization of the thousand other city states. The main part of the book is a regionally organized inventory of all identifiable poleis covering the Greek world from Spain to the Caucasus and from the Crimea to Libya. This inventory is the work of 47 specialists, and is divided into 46 chapters, each covering a region. Each chapter contains an account of the region, a list of second-order settlements, and an alphabetically ordered description of the poleis. This description covers such topics as polis status, territory, settlement pattern, urban centre, city walls and monumental architecture, population, military strength, constitution, alliance membership, colonization, coinage, and Panhellenic victors. The first part of the book is a description of the method and principles applied in the construction of the inventory and an analysis of some of the results to be obtained by a comparative study of the 1,035 poleis included in it. The ancient Greek concept of polis is distinguished from the modern term `city state', which historians use to cover many other historic civilizations, from ancient Sumeria to the West African cultures absorbed by the nineteenth-century colonializing powers. The focus of this project is what the Greeks themselves considered a polis to be.

Book Measure of the Heart

Download or read book Measure of the Heart written by Mary Ellen Geist and published by Grand Central Publishing. This book was released on 2008-08-13 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mary Ellen Geist decided to leave her job as a CBS Radio anchor to return home to Michigan when her father's Alzheimer's got to be too much for her mother to shoulder alone. She chose to live her life by a different set of priorities: to be guided by her heart, not by outside accomplishment and recognition. The New York Times wrote a front page story on Mary Ellen on Thanksgiving 2005. It was one of the most e-mailed stories for the month. Through her own story and through interviews with doctors and other women who've followed the "Daughter Track"--leaving a job to care for an aging parent--Geist offers emotional insights on how to encourage interaction with the loved one you're caring for; how to determine daily tasks that are achievable and rewarding; how the personality of the patient affects the caregiving and the progression of the diseases; as well as invaluable advice about how caregivers can take care of themselves while accomplishing the Herculean task of constantly caring for others. Geist's years in journalism allow her to report on Boomers' caretaking dilemmas with professional objectivity, and her warm voice brings compassion and insight to one of the most difficult stituations a son or daughter may face during his or her life.

Book Subversive Adaptations

Download or read book Subversive Adaptations written by Petr Bubeníček and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with film adaptations of literary works created in Communist Czechoslovakia between 1954 and 1969, such as The Fabulous World of Jules Verne (Zeman 1958), Marketa Lazarová (Vláčil 1967), and The Joke (Jireš 1969). Bubeníček treats a historically significant period around which myths and misinformation have arisen. The book is broad in scope and examines aesthetic, political, social, and cultural issues. It sets out to disprove the notion that the state-controlled film industry behind the Iron Curtain produced only aesthetically uniform works pandering to official ideology. Bubeníček’s main aim is to show how the political situation of Communist Czechoslovakia moulded the film adaptations created there, but also how these same works, in turn, shaped the sociocultural conditions of the 1950s and the 1960s.

Book Kath e rina

  • Author : ByEri
  • Publisher : Xlibris Corporation

Download or read book Kath e rina written by ByEri and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2005-04-15 with total page 649 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All my books are recounts of true happenings. The series: The Century Before 2000 focuses on the suffering of certain women and children of that era. Heroines, of the last Century, selected from specifc strata in society, portray normal everyday life and trials and tribulations during wartimes. For some plights began before recorded dates of political conflicts and continued in the aftermath. KATH(E)RINA realistically re-enacts in chronological order what it was like when giant-sized bombs rained from the the sky and upon impact shook or collapsed buildings, worse... trapped women, children and the aging beneath. Sometimes other women came to their rescue, sometimes they couldn't. Seldom the rescuers were trained men in their prime, (then serving in the military), they were mainly women; often mothers and children or men too old or too young for the armed services. All events in KATH(E)RINA actually took place, only her name is fictitious. I might point out that geographical orientation matter little when terror, pain, homelessness, hunger and depravation reign. What happened in Germany happened in England, in Poland, to some degree throughout Europe and Asia and to this day violence still reigns in many parts of the world. Apparently Earth's inhabitants still haven't learned yet to live peacefully on our beautiful but rapidly shrinking Planet.
