Book Tensile and Fatigue Behavior of a Silicon Carbide Silicon Carbide Composite at 1300 C

Download or read book Tensile and Fatigue Behavior of a Silicon Carbide Silicon Carbide Composite at 1300 C written by Ö Ünal and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monotonic and fatigue properties of a silicon carbide/silicon carbide composite were studied at 1300°C in tension. All tests were conducted in nitrogen (N2) to eliminate oxidation. Because of the composite architecture and the differences between matrix and fiber properties, the composite failure under both monotonic and cyclic loads took place in stages. In a monotonie test, the composite failure occurred by the creep of bridging fibers, and thus, fibers displayed nonbrittle fracture features. In fatigue tests, although creep was also occurring under cyclic loads, the fracture surface analysis showed that final fracture took place in a brittle manner.

Book Fatigue Behavior of Silicon Carbide Reinforced Titanium Composites

Download or read book Fatigue Behavior of Silicon Carbide Reinforced Titanium Composites written by RT. Bhatt and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The low cycle axial fatigue properties of 25 and 44-fiber volume percent SiC/Ti(6Al-4V) composites were measured at room temperature and at 650°C. At room temperature, the S-N curves for the composites showed no anticipated improvement over bulk matrix behavior. Although axial and transverse tensile strength results suggest a degradation in silicon-carbide fiber strength during composite fabrication, it appears that the poor fatigue life of the composites was caused by a reduced fatigue resistance of the reinforced Ti(6Al-4V) matrix. Microstructural studies indicate that the reduced matrix behavior was due, in part, to the presence of flawed and fractured fibers created near the specimen surfaces by preparation techniques. Another possible contributing factor is the large residual tensile stresses that can exist in fiber-reinforced matrices. These effects as well as the effects of fatigue testing at high temperature are discussed.

Book Fatigue Behavior of an Advanced SiC SiC Composite with an Oxidation Inhibited Matrix at 1200 Deg C in Air and in Steam

Download or read book Fatigue Behavior of an Advanced SiC SiC Composite with an Oxidation Inhibited Matrix at 1200 Deg C in Air and in Steam written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fatigue behavior of an advanced Silicon Carbide/Silcon (SiC/SiC) ceramic matrix composite (CMC) with oxidation inhibited matrix was investigated at 1200 deg C in laboratory air and in steam environments. The composite consisted of an oxidation inhibited SiC matrix reinforced with Hi-Nicalon fibers coated with pyrolytic carbon (PyC) with a boron carbide overlay woven into eight-harness-satin (8HS) weave plies. Tensile stress-strain behavior and tensile properties were evaluated at 1200?C. Tension-tension fatigue tests were conducted in both laboratory air and in steam at 1200 deg C at frequencies of 0.1 Hz, 1.0 Hz, and 10 Hz. The tension-tension fatigue tests had a ratio of minimum stress to maximum stress of R = 0.05, with maximum stresses ranging from 100 to 140 MPa in air and in steam. Fatigue run-out was defined as 105 cycles for the 0.1 Hz tests and as 2 x 105 cycles for the 1.0 Hz and 10 Hz tests. Strain accumulation with cycles and modulus evolution with cycles were analyzed for each fatigue test. The presence of steam degraded the fatigue resistance of the material at 0.1 Hz and 10 Hz. At 1.0 Hz, the presence of steam appeared to have little influence on the fatigue resistance for the fatigue stress levels

This book was released on 1994 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation will investigate the fatigue life, crack initiation and short crack growth behavior of precipitation hardened aluminum alloys reinforced with SiCp using stress-controlled axial and bending fatigue test methods. The effect of reinforcement size and volume fraction along with matrix strength on fatigue behavior will be analyzed. The conclusion of this research will lead to selection of a composite matrix alloy and reinforcement size and volume fraction tailored for a specific high cycle fatigue dependent application based on limited baseline composite data.

Book Monotonic Creep Rupture and Fatigue Behavior of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Silicon Carbide C SiC at an Elevated Temperature

Download or read book Monotonic Creep Rupture and Fatigue Behavior of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Silicon Carbide C SiC at an Elevated Temperature written by John Mark Engesser and published by . This book was released on 2004-03-01 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of this research effort was to examine the impact that cyclic loading frequency has on the life of a C/SiC composite at an elevated temperature of 550 C. Cyclic loading of C/SiC was investigated at frequencies of 375 Hz, 10 Hz, 1 Hz, and 0.1 Hz. Creep-Rupture tests and tests that were combinations of creep-rupture and fatigue were also accomplished. A monotonic tensile test was performed at 550 C and compared to a room temperature monotonic test. This study showed that an elevated temperature of 550 C has very little effect on the Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS) of C/SiC. The UTS of C/SiC at 550 C was 487 MPa, while the room temperature UTS is 493 MPa. The three creep-rupture tests in this study performed at 350 MPa, 175 MPa and 105 MPa had lives of less than 11 hours despite the fact that the UTS of C/SiC is 487 MPa at 550 C. The short life of the specimens is due to the oxidation of the carbon fibers within the C/SiC composite. S-N curves developed from the fatigue tests indicate that there is an increase in cycles to failure as the frequency is increased. Another important discovery in this study was the fact that oxidation of the carbon fibers within C/SiC is reduced when frequency of fatigue is increased. At high frequency fatigue (10Hz to 375 Hz), C/SiC composites have longer cycle lives and time lives than at low cycle fatigue. Microscopic and SEM analysis verified that oxidation of carbon within C/SiC is slowed as frequency of fatigue is increased.
