They have a claim to great antiquity, with the earliest Vedic Sanskrit texts dating to the end of the second millennium B.C. With texts in Old Indo-Aryan, Middle Indo-Aryan and Modern Indo-Aryan, this language family supplies a historical documentation of language change over a longer period than any other subgroup of Indo-European. This volume is divided into two main sections dealing with general matters and individual languages. Each chapter on the individual language covers the phonology and grammar (morphology and syntax) of the language and its writing system, and gives the historical background and information concerning the geography of the language and the number of its speakers.

Book excerpt: This monograph aims to close the gap in our knowledge of the nature and pace of grammatical change during the formative period of today’s Indo-Aryan languages. During the 6th-12th c. the gradual erosion of the synthetic morphology of Old Indo-Aryan resulted ultimately in the remodelling of its syntax in the direction of the New Indo-Aryan analytic type. This study concentrates on the emergence and development of the ergative construction in terms of the passive-to-ergative reanalysis and the co-existence of the ergative construction with the old and new analytic passive constructions. Special attention is paid to the actuation problem seen as the tug of war between conservative and eliminative forces during their development. Other chapters deal with the evolution of grammatical and lexical aspect, causativization, modality, absolute constructions and subordination. This study is based on a wealth of new data gleaned from original poetic works in Apabhraṃśa (by Svayaṃbhādeva, Puṣpadanta, Haribhadra, Somaprabha et al.). It contains sections dealing with descriptive techniques of Medieval Indian grammarians (esp. Hemacandra). All the Sanskrit, Prakrit and Apabhraṃśa examples are consistently parsed and translated. The opus is cast in the theoretical framework of Functional Grammar of the Prague and Amsterdam Schools. It should be of particular interest to scholars and students of Indo-Aryan and general historical linguistics, especially those interested in the issues of morphosyntactic change and typology in their sociohistorical setting.

It does so by proposing an analytical framework to explain the grammatical principles underlying various pragmatic and textual functions attributed to tense and aspect that create various narrative effects. The proposed linguistic framework, founded on the Reichenbachian temporal primitives of Event Time (E), Reference Time (R) and Speech Time (S) and relations among these primitives, originates from the sentence-internal grammar of tense and aspect. This dissertation investigates several questions associated with tense and aspect combinations in narratives: How tenses are embedded in narratives? What is the narrative function of historical present tense? How does grammatical aspect contribute to explain narrator's perspective on events? What is the contribution of tense- aspect in foregrounding- backgrounding of narrative events? It attempts to explain larger discourse structure with sentence-level grammatical principles by developing linguistic tools that explain pragmatic elements such as speaker's attitude, distance and viewpoint when describing an event. The syntactic, semantic and pragmatic interface of this dissertation intersects the boundaries of linguistic analysis and literary analysis to show that there is a single grammatical system underlying both the narrative and non-narrative use of language. By so doing, it significantly advances the understanding of narrative structure, meaning and interpretation by providing grammatically meaningful explanation of the so-called "metaphorical" use of tense and aspect and their "shift." A consequence of this approach is that it eliminates the need to postulate two separate rule systems governing the sentence level and discourse level structures as proposed in the narratological analyses. The unification of the grammatical principles underlying the non-narrative and narrative temporal structures is proposed here by borrowing theoretical insights from neo-Reichenbachian approaches to tense and aspect. The linguistic framework founded on the inherent properties of tense and aspect categories develops analytical devices to explain the specimen Indo-Aryan narrative texts and strongly predicts that similar issues in narratives across languages can be explained with the framework developed here.

This book explores a key issue in linguistic theory, the systematic variation in form between semantic equivalents across languages. Two contrasting views of the role of lexical meaning in the analysis of such variation can be found in the literature: (i) uniformity, whereby lexical meaning is universal, and variation arises from idiosyncratic differences in the inventory and phonological shape of language-particular functional material, and (ii) transparency, whereby systematic variation in form arises from systematic variation in the meaning of basic lexical items. In this volume, Itamar Francez and Andrew Koontz-Garboden contrast these views as applied to the empirical domain of property concept sentences - sentences expressing adjectival predication and their translational equivalents across languages. They demonstrate that property concept sentences vary systematically between possessive and predicative form, and propose a transparentist analysis of this variation that links it to the lexical denotations of basic property concept lexemes. At the heart of the analysis are qualities: mass-like model theoretic objects that closely resemble scales. The authors contrast their transparentist analysis with uniformitarian alternatives, demonstrating its theoretical and empirical advantages. They then show that the proposed theory of qualities can account for interesting and novel observations in two central domains of grammatical theory: the theory of syntactic categories, and the theory of mass nouns. The overall results highlight the importance of the lexicon as a locus of generalizations about the limits of crosslinguistic variation.
