Book Folktales of Ancient India

Download or read book Folktales of Ancient India written by Raywat Deonandan and published by Intanjible Press. This book was released on 2024-06-26 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-five years in the making, this anthology of centuries-old folk tales from the villages of South Asia recreate the oral traditions of old. Treat yourself to 27 old-fashioned short stories of kings, princesses, fools, wisemen, talking animals, treacherous villains, and unlikely heroes. Plucked and distilled from the anthropological literature, these tales hearken to a simpler time and faraway places, when old and young alike were entertained by fireside storytellers who wandered from village to village to ply their yarn-spinning trade. Be entertained by Harisharam the Frog, who pretended to be a fortune teller until his claims were challenged by the most powerful man in the land. Learn of Ravi the Fly, a quiet unassuming servant who turned out to be the greatest swindler in the land. Be awed by the simple Potmaker whose foolishness thrust him to the front of a great army. And yearn for Savitri, the perfect princess whose relentless love would falter before none, not even the god of Death. These tales have been told by oral storytellers in villages across ancient India, each time twisting and evolving. Some might seem familiar, given overlapping themes and the messiness of world history and geography. But there’s something about folk tales that are distinct from modern stories: they reflect not only timeless themes and perhaps the personality of the storyteller, but also say something of the nature of the people of the times.

Book excerpt: "In 1509 Krishnadevaraya, a prince from humble origins, ascended the throne of Vijayanagara. The empire he inherited was weak from two messy dynastic successions, and ambitious enemy kings loomed large on all sides--a haughty king of Orissa in the east, five upstart Deccan sultans to the north, revolting Tamil rajas in the south and enterprising Portuguese soldiers from the west. But Krishnadevaraya quickly rose to the challenge, and in the course of his remarkable twenty-year reign, he changed history forever. He won every single battle he fought and unified the whole of south India under his banner. Krishnadevaraya is remembered today as one of India’s greatest kings, not only because of his successes on the battlefield or the dazzling splendour of his empire, but because he was India’s first truly global leader. He had to confront very modern problems, such as building international alliances and negotiating overseas trade deals, while grappling with the challenges of globalism and multiculturalism. The Deccan of his time was a cosmopolitan place where Hindus and Muslims, north Indians and south Indians, Persians and Portuguese, all intermingled as they made their lives and fortunes. This cultural dynamism also inspired Krishnadevaraya to look back at India’s past and reflect on her histories and traditions. As a philosopher-king who was also a celebrated poet in his own right, he presided over an Indian renaissance, when ancient texts and traditions were reinvigorated and infused with a fresh and modern vitality. Five hundred years after Krishnadevaraya’s death, he is still remembered and loved as a compassionate and wise king, one who is immortalized in films and folk tales, poems and ballads. This fascinating and riveting book is meticulously researched and beautifully written. Based on Portuguese and Persian chronicles, as well as many overlooked Telugu literary sources, Raya is the definitive biography of one of the world’s greatest leaders"--Front dust jacket flap.

Book A Flowering Tree and Other Oral Tales from India

Download or read book A Flowering Tree and Other Oral Tales from India written by A. K. Ramanujan and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book of oral tales from the south Indian region of Kannada represents the culmination of a lifetime of research by A. K. Ramanujan, one of the most revered scholars and writers of his time. The result of over three decades' labor, this long-awaited collection makes available for the first time a wealth of folktales from a region that has not yet been adequately represented in world literature. Ramanujan's skill as a translator, his graceful writing style, and his profound love and understanding of the subject enrich the tales that he collected, translated, and interpreted. With a written literature recorded from about 800 A.D., Kannada is rich in mythology, devotional and secular poetry, and more recently novels and plays. Ramanujan, born in Mysore in 1929, had an intimate knowledge of the language. In the 1950s, when working as a college lecturer, he began collecting these tales from everyone he could--servants, aunts, schoolteachers, children, carpenters, tailors. In 1970 he began translating and interpreting the tales, a project that absorbed him for the next three decades. When Ramanujan died in 1993, the translations were complete and he had written notes for about half of the tales. With its unsentimental sympathies, its laughter, and its delightfully vivid sense of detail, the collection stands as a significant and moving monument to Ramanujan's memory as a scholar and writer.
