Book New Perspectives on Kristallnacht

Download or read book New Perspectives on Kristallnacht written by Steven J. Ross and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 2019-12-15 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On November 9 and 10, 1938, Nazi leadership unleashed an unprecedented orchestrated wave of violence against Jews in Germany, Austria, and the Sudetenland, supposedly in response to the assassination of a Nazi diplomat by a young Polish Jew, but in reality to force the remaining Jews out of the country. During the pogrom, Stormtroopers, Hitler Youth, and ordinary Germans murdered more than a hundred Jews (many more committed suicide) and ransacked and destroyed thousands of Jewish institutions, synagogues, shops, and homes. Thirty thousand Jews were arrested and sent to Nazi concentration camps. Volume 17 of the Casden Annual Review includes a series of articles presented at an international conference titled “New Perspectives on Kristallnacht: After 80 Years, the Nazi Pogrom in Global Comparison.” Assessing events 80 years after the violent anti-Jewish pogrom of 1938, contributors to this volume offer new cutting-edge scholarship on the event and its repercussions. Contributors include scholars from the United States, Germany, Israel, and the United Kingdom who represent a wide variety of disciplines, including history, political science, and Jewish and media studies. Their essays discuss reactions to the pogrom by victims and witnesses inside Nazi Germany as well as by foreign journalists, diplomats, Jewish organizations, and Jewish print media. Several contributors to the volume analyze postwar narratives of and global comparisons to Kristallnacht, with the aim of situating this anti-Jewish pogrom in its historical context, as well as its place in world history.

  • Author : Robert MacDougall
  • Publisher : University of Pennsylvania Press
  • Release : 2014-01-08

Download or read book The People s Network written by Robert MacDougall and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2014-01-08 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bell System dominated telecommunications in the United States and Canada for most of the twentieth century, but its monopoly was not inevitable. In the decades around 1900, ordinary citizens—farmers, doctors, small-town entrepreneurs—established tens of thousands of independent telephone systems, stringing their own wires to bring this new technology to the people. Managed by opportunists and idealists alike, these small businesses were motivated not only by profit but also by the promise of open communication as a weapon against monopoly capital and for protection of regional autonomy. As the Bell empire grew, independents fought fiercely to retain control of their local networks and companies—a struggle with an emerging corporate giant that has been almost entirely forgotten. The People's Network reconstructs the story of the telephone's contentious beginnings, exploring the interplay of political economy, business strategy, and social practice in the creation of modern North American telecommunications. Drawing from government documents in the United States and Canada, independent telephone journals and publications, and the archives of regional Bell operating companies and their rivals, Robert MacDougall locates the national debates over the meaning, use, and organization of the telephone industry as a turning point in the history of information networks. The competing businesses represented dueling political philosophies: regional versus national identity and local versus centralized power. Although independent telephone companies did not win their fight with big business, they fundamentally changed the way telecommunications were conceived.

Book Shield of David The Story of Israel s Armed Forces

Download or read book Shield of David The Story of Israel s Armed Forces written by Yigal Allon and published by Plunkett Lake Press. This book was released on 2019-08-09 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shield of David tells the history of the Jews’ armed forces from the Palestine Yishuv’s first efforts at self-defense in the early 1900s, under the Ottoman Empire and the British Mandate, during Israel’s 1948 War of Independence, the 1956 Suez Campaign and until the 1967 Six-Day War. “In recent years, most particularly since the Six-Day War of June 1967, people throughout the world have asked themselves how it happened that the Israel Defence Forces won so resounding a victory over the Arab armies. What suddenly endowed the Jewish people — traditionally non-martial — with such impressive military skills? What is the secret of the prowess of Israeli soldiers, airmen and sailors? The answer, of course, is that nothing happens ‘suddenly’; that the modern story of Jewish self-defence in the Land of Israel dates back some eighty years, and is the result of the commitment and dedication to national survival of many men and women — most of whom, seeking no publicity, received none. This book is my attempt to tell part of that little-known story — as simply, briefly and clearly as possible.” — Yigal Allon, Author’s Note, 1970
