Book Spiritual Authority and Temporal Power

Download or read book Spiritual Authority and Temporal Power written by René Guénon and published by Sophia Perennis. This book was released on 2001 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spiritual Authority and Temporal Power is an analysis of cyclical manifestation, and more specifically of the relationship between royal and sacerdotal power. In accord with the Hindu doctrine of manvantaras and Plato's depiction of historical degeneration in the Republic, Guénon views history here as a series of 'revolts' of lower castes against the higher. The kshatriyas (warriors) revolt against the brahmins (priests), thus setting the stage for a revolt of the vaishyas (loosely, the bourgeoisie), as in the French revolution-and, finally, the shudras (the proletariat), as in the Russian revolution (which Guénon does not touch upon in this work). From one point of view, this is a progressive degeneration; from another it is entirely lawful, given the 'entropic' nature of manifestation itself. External, historical descent reflects an inner degeneration: knowledge (the celestial paradise) is eclipsed by heroic action (the terrestrial paradise), which is in turn overrun by the inertia and agitation of the passions. Yet the nadir of degeneration is also the point of renewal: the dawning of the Heavenly Jerusalem-spiritual Knowledge-which begins a new cycle of manifestation.

Book Temporal Power A Study in Supremacy

Download or read book Temporal Power A Study in Supremacy written by Marie Corelli and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2019-11-26 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marie Corelli's novel, 'Temporal Power: A Study in Supremacy', challenges the idea that man's ultimate goal should be to conquer nature. Through a conversation between two men, one a monarch and the other a gardener, the novel explores the limitations of human power and the masks we wear to attain it. As they sit in a Royal palace facing the sea, surrounded by the sweet fragrance of narcissi and the sparkle of yachts, the two men reflect on the futility of human civilization, laws, and customs that are all doomed to destruction and oblivion. With powerful prose and insight, Corelli's novel delves into the human condition and the quest for power, leaving readers with a haunting message about the true cost of supremacy.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Temporal Power: A Study in Supremacy The statement is simple and terse; it is evidently intended to be wholly comprehensive. Its decisive, almost abrupt tone would seem to forbid either question or argument. The old world narrator of the sublime event thus briefly chronicled was a poet of no mean quality, though moved by the natural conceit of man to give undue importance to the earth as his own particular habitation. The perfect confidence with which he explains 'god' as making 'two great lights, the greater light to rule the day, the lesser light to rule the night, ' is touching to the verge of pathos; and the additional remark which he throws in, as it were casually, He made the stars also, ' cannot but move us to admiration. How childlike the simplicity of the soul which could so venture to deal with the inexplicable and tremendous problem of the Universe! How self-centred and sure the faith which could so arrange the work of Infinite and Eternal forces to suit its own limited intelligence! It is easy and natural to believe that 'god, ' or an everlasting Power of Goodness and Beauty called by that name, 'created the heavens and the earth, ' but one is often tempted to think that an altogether different and rival element must have been concerned in the making of Man. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time is the backdrop of historical inquiry, yet it is much more than a featureless setting for events. Different temporalities interact dynamically; sometimes they coexist tensely, sometimes they clash violently. In this innovative volume, editors Dan Edelstein, Stefanos Geroulanos, and Natasha Wheatley challenge how we interpret history by focusing on the nexus of two concepts—“power” and “time”—as they manifest in a wide variety of case studies. Analyzing history, culture, politics, technology, law, art, and science, this engaging book shows how power is constituted through the shaping of temporal regimes in historically specific ways. Power and Time includes seventeen essays on human rights; sovereignty; Islamic, European, Chinese, and Indian history; slavery; capitalism; revolution; the Supreme Court; the Anthropocene; and even the Manson Family. Power and Time will be an agenda-setting volume, highlighting the work of some of the world’s most respected and original contemporary historians and posing fundamental questions for the craft of history.
