Book Baroness of Hobcaw

Download or read book Baroness of Hobcaw written by Mary E. Miller and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2012-10-15 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The riveting biography of an heiress, equestrienne, spy-hunter, and patron of ecology Belle W. Baruch (1899-1964) could outride, outshoot, outhunt, and outsail most of the young men of her elite social circle—abilities that distanced her from other debutantes of 1917. Unapologetic for her athleticism and interests in traditionally masculine pursuits, Baruch towered above male and female counterparts in height and daring. While she is known today for the wildlife conservation and biological research center on the South Carolina coast that bears her family name, Belle's story is a rich narrative about one nonconformist's ties to the land. In Baroness of Hobcaw, Mary E. Miller provides a provocative portrait of this unorthodox woman who gave a gift of monumental importance to the scientific community. Belle's father, Bernard M. Baruch, the so-called Wolf of Wall Street, held sway over the financial and diplomatic world of the early twentieth century and served as an adviser to seven U.S. presidents. In 1905 he bought Hobcaw Barony, a sprawling seaside retreat where he entertained the likes of Churchill and FDR. Belle's daily life at Hobcaw reflects the world of wealthy northerners, including the Vanderbilts and Luces, who bought tracts of southern acreage. Miller details Belle's exploits—fox hunting at Hobcaw, show jumping at Deauville, flying her own plane, traveling with Edith Bolling Wilson, and patrolling the South Carolina beach for spies during World War II. Belle's story also reveals her efforts to win her mother's approval and her father's attention, as well as her unraveling relationships with friends, family, employees, and lovers—both male and female. Miller describes Belle's final success in saving Hobcaw from development as the overarching triumph of a tempestuous life.

Recently widowed, and still overwhelmed by his late-wife’s medical bills and the lingering pain of her infidelity, he finds it easy to rationalize a finders-keepers mentality. But, nagged by guilt…and terrified when he learns the accident victim is Michigan’s senior U.S. Senator…he is too afraid to spend any of his ill-gotten fortune or risk the imagined consequences of returning it. Three weeks later, while still wavering, Marshall is stunned to discover a $2-a-week petty gambling habit has dealt him a second unexpected windfall. He is the sole winner of the Michigan Lotto drawing…and its $15-million jackpot! With official confirmation, comes the slow realization that it also provides the perfect cover for his original dilemma. But as carefully as Marshall has covered his tracks, he has unwittingly left footprints…missteps that ultimately catch the attention of those still scrambling to recover the less obvious contents of the heavy satchel they had delivered to the powerful chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee only an hour before his untimely death.

Book The Road To Stalingrad

  • Author : Benno Zieser
  • Publisher : Pickle Partners Publishing
  • Release : 2015-11-06
  • ISBN : 1786254212
  • Pages : 247 pages

Download or read book The Road To Stalingrad written by Benno Zieser and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: STALINGRAD...an eyewitness report of World War II’s most decisive battle. Drafted into the German infantry when he was scarcely out of school, Benno Zieser fought his way deep into Soviet Russia—advancing, retreating, digging in, destroying tanks with hand grenades, battling snipers, killing the enemy in hand-to-hand combat. Outnumbered and outmaneuvered, he and his platoon struggled on, till their bravery was no longer an act of patriotism but a desperate effort to survive. Few of them did. At Stalingrad, the Wehrmacht soldiers reached the end of the line: nothing could spring the giant trap set by Russian crack troops closing in on them. Zieser’s account of the war’s most brutal battle is intensely moving and honest—a personal ordeal with a universal meaning. On the last day of January, 1943, the German Sixth Army surrendered to the Russians at Stalingrad. After a winter campaign of unparalleled horror and hardship, the Wehrmacht was beaten. THE ROAD TO STALINGRAD is a shattering eyewitness account of that lost battle—written by a survivor. Benno Zieser was drafted at the age of nineteen and fought in the infantry at Stalingrad. In this book he tells of his first naive enthusiasm—then the shocking realities: The frozen wastes of an unconquerable continent...gutted roads strewn with abandoned equipment...the anonymous graves by the wayside...the colossal fraud behind Hitler’s promise of victory. Not since All QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT has a German author written such a powerful indictment of war—but Benno Zieser’s book is fact, not fiction.

Book Cold War Friendships

Download or read book Cold War Friendships written by Josephine Nock-Hee Park and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-02 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cold War Friendships explores the plight of the Asian ally of the American wars in Korea and Vietnam. Enlisted into proxy warfare, this figure is not a friend but a "friendly," a wartime convenience enlisted to serve a superpower. It is through this deeply unequal relation, however, that the Cold War friendly secures her own integrity and insists upon her place in the neocolonial imperium. This study reads a set of highly enterprising wartime subjects who make their way to the US via difficult attachments. American forces ventured into newly postcolonial Korea and Vietnam, both plunged into civil wars, to draw the dividing line of the Cold War. The strange success of containment and militarization in Korea unraveled in Vietnam, but the friendly marks the significant continuity between these hot wars. In both cases, the friendly justified the fight: she was also a political necessity who redeployed cold war alliances, and, remarkably, made her way to America. As subjects in process--and indeed, proto-Americans--these figures are prime literary subjects, whose processes of becoming are on full display in Asian American novels and testimonies of these wars. Literary writings on both of these conflicts are presently burgeoning, and Cold War Friendships performs close analyses of key texts whose stylistic constraints and contradictions--shot through with political and historical nuance--present complex gestures of alliance.

Download or read book Trouble Boys written by Bob Mehr and published by Da Capo Press. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER Based on a decade of research and reporting--as well as access to the Replacements' key principals, Paul Westerberg and Tommy Stinson--author Bob Mehr has fashioned something far more compelling than a conventional band bio. Trouble Boys is a deeply intimate portrait, revealing the primal factors and forces that shaped one of the most brilliant and notoriously self-destructive rock 'n' roll bands of all time. Beginning with riveting revelations about the Replacements' troubled early years, Trouble Boys follows the group as they rise within the early '80s American underground. It uncovers the darker truths behind the band's legendary drinking, showing how their addictions first came to define them, and then nearly destroyed them. A roaring road adventure, a heartrending family drama, and a cautionary showbiz tale, Trouble Boys has deservedly been hailed as an instant classic of rock lit.

Book Churchill

Download or read book Churchill written by Ashley Jackson and published by Quercus. This book was released on 2014-09-09 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Churchill Ashley Jackson paints an unvarnished portrait of Winston Churchill that removes the hagiography that has surrounded the myth of one of the greatest politicians of the last hundred years. Winston Churchill attracted far more criticism alive than he has since his death. He was, according to Evelyn Waugh, "always in the wrong, surrounded by crooks, a terrible father, a radio personality." To others, he was the savior of the nation, even of Western civilization, "the greatest Briton" who ever lived. Whatever one's view, Winston Churchill remains splendidly unreduced. He also remains enormous fun--a cartoonist's and caricaturist's dream on the one hand, one of the most powerful and successful statesmen in modern history on the other. Globally famed for his role as a leader during the Second World War, this study resists the temptation to conflate Churchill's post-war career with Britain's demise on the international stage. Nor does it endorse the notion that Churchill became an anachronism as he lived and continued to work, at a prodigious rate, through his seventies and eighties. As well as being Britain's most celebrated politician and war leader, Winston Churchill was a Nobel Prize-winning author. He was one of the most prolific writers of his age and his accounts of the momentous events through which he lived have indelibly marked the way in which modern British history has been conceptualized. Uniquely endowed with talent, energy and determination, Winston Churchill was, as a close wartime colleague put it, "unlike anyone you have ever met before." Ashley Jackson describes the contours and contradictions of Churchill's remarkable life and career as a solider, politician, historian, journalist, painter, amateur farmer and homemaker. From thrusting subaltern to high-flying politician, Cabinet outcast to elder statesman, this is the eternally fascinating story of Winston Churchill's appointment with destiny.
