Download or read book Summa Theologica Selections written by Thomas Aquinas and published by Veritas Press. This book was released on 2018-12-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medieval Christians dubbed Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) the Angelic Doctor. No wonder they did. His penetrating thoughts probed the depths of divine revelation. Few thinkers have shaped Christians' minds and stirred their hearts more profoundly. Begun in 1265 but unfinished at his death, the Summa Theologica is Thomas's magnum opus. In it he sets forth cases for the existence and nature of God. He teaches and defends the Christian faith's solid foundation. Some Christian thinkers influence the day in which they live. Some, like Thomas, leave a profound impact on generations. Some pastors and theologians speak only to the head, and some, only to the heart. A precious few can speak with carefulness and charity to both, and Thomas Aquinas may be chief among them.

Download or read book Aquinas s Eschatological Ethics and the Virtue of Temperance written by Matthew Levering and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2019-11-30 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Aquinas’s Eschatological Ethics and the Virtue of Temperance, Matthew Levering argues that Catholic ethics make sense only in light of the biblical worldview that Jesus has inaugurated the kingdom of God by pouring out his spirit. Jesus has made it possible for us to know and obey God’s law for human flourishing as individuals and communities. He has reoriented our lives toward the goal of beatific communion with him in charity, which affects the exercise of the moral virtues that pertain to human flourishing. Without the context of the inaugurated kingdom, Catholic ethics as traditionally conceived will seem like an effort to find a middle ground between legalistic rigorism and relativistic laxism, which is especially the case with the virtue of temperance, the focus of Levering’s book. After an opening chapter on the eschatological/biblical character of Catholic ethics, the ensuing chapters engage Aquinas’s theology of temperance in the Summa theologiae, which identifies and examines a number of virtues associated with temperance. Levering demonstrates that the theology of temperance is profoundly biblical, and that Aquinas’s theology of temperance relies for its intelligibility upon Christ’s inauguration of the kingdom of God as the graced fulfillment of our created nature. The book develops new vistas for scholars and students interested in moral theology.

Download or read book Character Strengths and Virtues written by Christopher Peterson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-04-08 with total page 815 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Character" has become a front-and-center topic in contemporary discourse, but this term does not have a fixed meaning. Character may be simply defined by what someone does not do, but a more active and thorough definition is necessary, one that addresses certain vital questions. Is character a singular characteristic of an individual, or is it composed of different aspects? Does character--however we define it--exist in degrees, or is it simply something one happens to have? How can character be developed? Can it be learned? Relatedly, can it be taught, and who might be the most effective teacher? What roles are played by family, schools, the media, religion, and the larger culture? This groundbreaking handbook of character strengths and virtues is the first progress report from a prestigious group of researchers who have undertaken the systematic classification and measurement of widely valued positive traits. They approach good character in terms of separate strengths-authenticity, persistence, kindness, gratitude, hope, humor, and so on-each of which exists in degrees. Character Strengths and Virtues classifies twenty-four specific strengths under six broad virtues that consistently emerge across history and culture: wisdom, courage, humanity, justice, temperance, and transcendence. Each strength is thoroughly examined in its own chapter, with special attention to its meaning, explanation, measurement, causes, correlates, consequences, and development across the life span, as well as to strategies for its deliberate cultivation. This book demands the attention of anyone interested in psychology and what it can teach about the good life.
