Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Temperance Addresses Jonathan K. Taylor was born in Loudoun County, Va., September 3d, 1838, and came to Baltimore November 6th, 1879, to establish a General Agency for the Provident Life & Trust Company of Philadelphia. Soon after his arrival he was elected a member of the Board of Trustees of the Maryland State Temperance Alliance. William Daniel, the President, organized the Alliance in 1873. Mr. Taylor became an active member, speaking in many counties of the State and in Baltimore City on the subject of local option, which was the watchword of the Alliance. He made his first address on temperance before a club in Coatesville, Pa., on December 31st, 1865, and from that time has been a most ardent and active worker in the temperance cause. Mr. Taylor is Vice-President of the Anti-Saloon League of Maryland, President of the Maryland State Temperance Alliance of Baltimore City, Incorporated, Chairman of the Committee on Co-operation with the Anti-Saloon League of the Baltimore Yearly Meeting of Friends, and Chairman of the Committee on Temperance of the Baltimore Monthly Meeting of Friends. By direction of the Anti-Saloon League of Maryland a number of his addresses, and extracts from same, etc., have been collected and published in this pamphlet, with the hope that it might aid in some degree in pressing forward the great temperance cause, which has been so largely a part of Mr. Taylor's life work in connection with his regular business. Mr. Taylor's business offices are at 914 Fidelity Building, Baltimore, Md. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Five Rights of the Individual

Download or read book The Five Rights of the Individual written by Philip Schuyler and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The US government makes 350 pages of new laws each day, including directives of policy that limit what an individual may do at home alone or with consenting adults. Such laws are intended to make people safer, healthier, or more productive, but they often violate the Five Rights because they sacrifice personal choices to some presumed greater good. Directives of policy may include laws that violate the rights to privacy or free speech; laws restricting abortion or physician-assisted suicide; restrictions on gun rights; prohibitions on unhealthy foods, cigarettes, alcohol, or drugs; laws that discriminate against gays; and laws that violate property rights. Drug prohibition laws have been the most damaging. Over the past 40 years, the US population grew 50 percent while its prison population grew 1,000 percent, due mostly to antidrug laws. There are now two million Americans in jail, half of whom didn’t harm, coerce, or defraud anyone. The land of the free has one twentieth of the world’s population and one fifth of its prison population. Our incarceration rate is seven times that of European countries. No democracy has ever had such a large percentage of its people behind bars. Legalization of marijuana and decriminalization of other drugs would free hundreds of thousands of individuals, end prison overcrowding, and save billions of dollars now spent trying to enforce unenforceable laws. There would be less need for spying, wiretapping, and breaking down doors. Americans could stop thinking of the police as the enemy and vice-versa, permitting a renewal of respect for the Five Rights.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Address on Temperance I cannot h0pe, in the present stage of the temperance effort, to render any important aid to your cause by novelty of suggestion. Its friends have thoroughly explored the ground, over which I am to travel. 'still every man, who is accustomed to think for himself, is naturally attracted to particular views or points in the most familiar subject; and, by concentrating his thoughts on these, he sometimes succeeds in giving them a new prominence, in vindicating their just'rank, and in securing to them an attention, which they may not have received, but which is their due.
