Book Tell em I Died Game

Download or read book Tell em I Died Game written by Graham Seal and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ned Kelly did not say Tell 'em I died! But well he might have -- and many people believe he did. Graham Seal's classic study of the Ned Kelly legend shows that, in a sense, facts are unimportant. Many generations of Australians have needed to believe in Ned Kelly, and have tailored his legend to fit their needs. The recent upsurge in Ned Kelly is the latest phase in a tradition that has taken Ned from bush Robin Hood and folk hero to media obsession and national icon, projected to the world as part of the 2000 Sydney Olympics celebrations. Regardless of the facts, the bushranger who murdered policemen and robbed banks remains Australia's best-loved villain -- or hero?

Book excerpt: A “marvelously macabre” (Kirkus Reviews) history of the bizarre afterlives of corpses of the celebrated and notorious dead. For some of the most influential figures in history, death marked the start of a new adventure. The famous deceased have been stolen, burned, sold, pickled, frozen, stuffed, impersonated, and even filed away in a lawyer’s office. Their fingers, teeth, toes, arms, legs, skulls, hearts, lungs, and nether regions have embarked on voyages that crisscross the globe and stretch the imagination. Counterfeiters tried to steal Lincoln’s corpse. Einstein’s brain went on a cross-country road trip. And after Lord Horatio Nelson perished at Trafalgar, his sailors submerged him in brandy—which they drank. From Alexander the Great to Elvis Presley, and from Beethoven to Dorothy Parker, Rest in Pieces connects the lives of the famous dead to the hilarious and horrifying adventures of their corpses, and traces the evolution of cultural attitudes toward death.

But how did Nicki go from being a looked-over assistant running promo packages over to BBC Radio 1 to a judge on Pop Idol with 15 million viewers tuning in for the nail-biting moment Will Young triumphed over Gareth Gates? Everyone knows there were the kingmakers in the heady days of 90s British pop music, but this is a queen's side of the story; a down-to-earth, no-nonsense team player who fought to make it in an industry that was very much a man's world. Empowering, entertaining and sprinkled with stardust, Nicki's inspirational behind-the-scenes story takes in the rocketing highs and heart-breaking lows of promoting, managing and touring with the Spice Girls, Amy Winehouse, David Bowie, Take That, Billie Piper, Phil Collins and S Club 7, all whilst confronting chauvinism and smashing through the career glass ceiling.

Download or read book Moby Dick written by Herman Melville and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2023-01-06 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The real background for the descriptions in Moby-Dick were Melville's own experiences as well as events that became known to him, which in turn were based on true events. The whaling ship Union, for example, set sail from Nantucket on September 19, 1807, for the South Atlantic. On the night of October 10, the ship was rocked by a ramming shock that caused a water intrusion. The crew was forced to abandon ship and was able to reach the Azores in their boats after seven days. The captain suspected the cause of the ramming impact was an encounter with a whale. The whaling ship Essex from Nantucket was sunk by ramming by a sperm whale on November 20, 1820. After the sinking of the Essex, the 20-man crew rescued themselves in three whaling boats. The men survived only by feeding on their comrades who starved to death en route and one who was shot. If you've ever taught a child to tie her shoe, or helped a friend with his homework, or even helped a stranger understand a posted sign, you have it in you to empower others through learning. Tutors are allowed to do what teachers and parents are often not able to do. They can be patient, observe, question, support, challenge, and applaud. They can move towards nurturing the true and total intelligence of their tutees. Learning to tutor is simply overcoming fears, sharing and acquiring knowledge, and appreciating the potential and wisdom in each other. Book Herman Melville The Dover Reader

Download or read book Herman Melville The Dover Reader written by Herman Melville and published by Courier Dover Publications. This book was released on 2016-03-21 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the early success of his tales of adventure in the South Seas, Herman Melville (1819–1891) suffered a reversal of fortunes with the 1851 publication of Moby-Dick. The great epic, now recognized as a masterpiece, was scorned by an uncomprehending nineteenth-century audience. Melville's preoccupation with metaphysical and philosophical issues and his use of symbols and archetypes foreshadowed elements of latter-day literature, and modern readers rejoice in his groundbreaking explorations of timeless questions. Along with excerpts from Moby-Dick, this anthology presents the complete text of Melville's classic of travel and adventure literature, Typee: A Peep at Polynesian Life. Additional features include the short stories "Bartleby the Scrivener," "The Paradise of Bachelors and the Tartarus of Maids," and "The Encantadas or Enchanted Isles."
