Schwingungen und Wellen beschiiftigen vor aHem Physikerlnnen und Ingenieurelnnen, obschon sie eigentlich mathematische Phiinomene darstellen. Nichtlineare Schwingungen und Wellen sind heute ein Eldorado fUr Mathematikerlnnen betreffend Bifur kationen, seltsame Attraktoren, deterministisches Chaos, Solitonen etc. Trotzdem beschriinkt man sich im Hochschulunterricht auch heute noch weitgehend auf lineare Probleme, selbst in Anbetracht der Tatsache, dass etwa die moderoe Elektronik auf nichtlinearen Prozessen beruht. Die Ursache ist vermutlich der Umstand, dass sich in der Forschung der Graben zwischen eigentlicher Mathematik einerseits und Ingenieurwissenschaften andrerseits stiindig verbreitert. Die Mathematikerlnnen erfinden bemerkenswerte Existenz-, Konvergenz- und andere Allgemeinbeweise, die Experimentalphysikerlnnen und Ingenieurlnnen benotigen dagegen einen Uberblick und handfeste Formeln, insbesondere dann, wenn sie zur digitalen Rechenmaschine greifen. Existenz, Konvergenz und andere allgemeine mathematische Siitze werden dabei in den Hintergrund gedriingt, solange bis etwas schiefgeht. Kontaktiert eine Experimentalphysikerln oder Ingenieurln in einem solchen Notfall einen Mathematikerln , dann reden die beiden eine verschiedene Sprache. Das vorliegende Buch versucht den erwiihnten Graben zu Uberbriicken. Es gibt einen Uberblick und handfeste Formeln, praktisch ohne Beweise. Dies Uberlasse ich geme kompetenten Mathernatikerlnnen und hoffe. Bei der Arbeit an diesem Buch bin ich vielen fUr Unterstiitzung und Rat zu Dank verpflichtet.
