Download or read book Real World Teen Services written by Jennifer Velásquez and published by American Library Association. This book was released on 2015-05-27 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are plenty of resources about teen services that focus on YA readers’ advisory and programming ideas. But the basics of day-to-day service to teens in the library setting, a discipline requiring specific skills, is all too often glossed over in professional literature. As a result many LIS grads begin serving teens armed with an incomplete understanding of why their job is both important and unique, and what they need to know from day one. This compromises their effectiveness as both young adult librarians and advocates for teen services. In this down-to-earth book, former Library Journal Mover & Shaker Velásquez explores real-world challenges and obstacles to teen service that often present themselves, offering solutions and guidance for both new YA librarians and those wanting to freshen up their approach. Presenting fresh ways of thinking about the role of the teen services librarian and how it fits into the organizational structure, Velásquez Combines field-tested approaches with current research to tackle common teen library service issues such as truancy, curfews, programming philosophy and mission, privacy, and organizational resistance, whether subtle or overtAddresses each topic from the perspective of working with teens, family members, fellow colleagues, and community stakeholdersPresents realistic strategies to help shift a library’s culture towards one that embraces teens and teen servicesShows how to get the most out of a library’s teen space, discussing factors like location, age restrictions, time of day restrictions, and staffing, plus suggestions for using the shelf-space of the YA collection as a starting pointThis book goes beyond the “what” and “how” of teen services to get to the “why,” ensuring that both new and experienced practitioners will understand the ways teens want to use public space, discover and create information, and interact with peers and adults.

Download or read book Teen Film written by Catherine Driscoll and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What makes a film a teen film? And why, when it represents such powerful and enduring ideas about youth and adolescence, is teen film usually viewed as culturally insignificant? Teen film is usually discussed as a representation of the changing American teenager, highlighting the institutions of high school and the nuclear family, and experiments in sexual development and identity formation. But not every film featuring these components is a teen film and not every teen film is American. Arguing that teen film is always a story about becoming a citizen and a subject, Teen Film presents a new history of the genre, surveys the existing body of scholarship, and introduces key critical tools for discussing teen film. Surveying a wide range of films including The Wild One, Heathers, Akira and Donnie Darko, the book's central focus is on what kind of adolescence teen film represents, and on teen film's capacity to produce new and influential images of adolescence.

Download or read book Your Teenager Is Not Crazy written by Jerusha Clark and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2016-03-29 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As God allows us to understand the mystery and marvel of brain science, we have the exciting opportunity to reexamine our assumptions about human behavior. Perhaps nowhere does this impact our lives more profoundly than when we think about raising children--especially teenagers. Where parents often see a sweet boy or girl who has morphed into an incomprehensible bundle of hormones and angst, what we really ought to be seeing is an amazing young adult whose brain is under heavy construction. And changing the way we see our teens will revolutionize our relationships with them. Organized by what we hear teens say--things like I'm bored, You just don't understand, Why are you freaking out?, I hate my life!, or Hold on . . . I just have to send this--this book helps parents develop compassion for their teens and discernment in parenting them as their brains are progressively remodeled. Rather than seeing the teen years as a time to simply hold on for dear life, Dr. Jeramy and Jerusha Clark show that they can be an amazing season of cultivating creativity, self-awareness, and passion for the things that really matter.
Download or read book Youth at Risk written by Peter Christian Olsen and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being at risk is not unique to a few easily identifiable teenagers: those failing in school, those from broken homes, those from low-income neighborhoods, those with certain psychosocial development deficiencies, those for whom we hold low expectations. All teenagers are at risk. At risk is a trait common to all adolescents. They are born that way. Each one of them is dependent upon the society in which they grow up to provide for their needs, and when that society, that culture, those parents, those schools, those communities upon which they depend fail them, they face the consequence of becoming at risk. No single characteristics of which they are responsible can account for their risk of failure. It is the institutions, the culture, the society at large that fails them. The institutions we have established to serve the needs of adolescents are at risk; at risk of failing to provide for their needs. --Peter Christian Olsen Youth at Risk is a resource designed for those who do ministry with at-risk youth. In his capacity as a youth minister and counselor to at-risk students, Olsen has become astutely aware of four very basic needs that affect the development of all young people: ¥ acceptance - belonging ¥ new beginnings and second chances - forgiveness ¥ significance - generosity ¥ freedom - independence Olsen examines the derivation of these developmental needs and how they or their absence contribute to shaping the personality, maturation, responsibility, and emotional stability of young people. From there, he emphasizes the imperative of the Christian community to respond to these needs, and provides helpful narrative illustrations for accomplishing this difficult yet rewarding mission.

Download or read book The Teenage Brain written by Frances E. Jensen and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2015-01-06 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Bestseller Renowned neurologist Dr. Frances E. Jensen offers a revolutionary look at the brains of teenagers, dispelling myths and offering practical advice for teens, parents and teachers. Dr. Frances E. Jensen is chair of the department of neurology in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. As a mother, teacher, researcher, clinician, and frequent lecturer to parents and teens, she is in a unique position to explain to readers the workings of the teen brain. In The Teenage Brain, Dr. Jensen brings to readers the astonishing findings that previously remained buried in academic journals. The root myth scientists believed for years was that the adolescent brain was essentially an adult one, only with fewer miles on it. Over the last decade, however, the scientific community has learned that the teen years encompass vitally important stages of brain development. Samples of some of the most recent findings include: Teens are better learners than adults because their brain cells more readily "build" memories. But this heightened adaptability can be hijacked by addiction, and the adolescent brain can become addicted more strongly and for a longer duration than the adult brain. Studies show that girls' brains are a full two years more mature than boys' brains in the mid-teens, possibly explaining differences seen in the classroom and in social behavior. Adolescents may not be as resilient to the effects of drugs as we thought. Recent experimental and human studies show that the occasional use of marijuana, for instance, can cause lingering memory problems even days after smoking, and that long-term use of pot impacts later adulthood IQ. Multi-tasking causes divided attention and has been shown to reduce learning ability in the teenage brain. Multi-tasking also has some addictive qualities, which may result in habitual short attention in teenagers. Emotionally stressful situations may impact the adolescent more than it would affect the adult: stress can have permanent effects on mental health and can to lead to higher risk of developing neuropsychiatric disorders such as depression. Dr. Jensen gathers what we’ve discovered about adolescent brain function, wiring, and capacity and explains the science in the contexts of everyday learning and multitasking, stress and memory, sleep, addiction, and decision-making. In this groundbreaking yet accessible book, these findings also yield practical suggestions that will help adults and teenagers negotiate the mysterious world of adolescent development.
