Download or read book A God in Ruins written by Kate Atkinson and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2015-05-05 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This stunning companion to Kate Atkinson's #1 bestseller Life After Life, "one of the best novels I've read this century" (Gillian Flynn), follows Ursula's brother Teddy as he navigates an unknown future after a perilous war. "He had been reconciled to death during the war and then suddenly the war was over and there was a next day and a next day. Part of him never adjusted to having a future." Kate Atkinson's dazzling Life After Life explored the possibility of infinite chances and the power of choices, following Ursula Todd as she lived through the turbulent events of the last century over and over again. A God in Ruins tells the dramatic story of the 20th Century through Ursula's beloved younger brother Teddy -- would-be poet, heroic pilot, husband, father, and grandfather -- as he navigates the perils and progress of a rapidly changing world. After all that Teddy endures in battle, his greatest challenge is living in a future he never expected to have. An ingenious and moving exploration of one ordinary man's path through extraordinary times, A God in Ruins proves once again that Kate Atkinson is one of the finest novelists of our age.
Download or read book Jump and Dance written by J. L. Walker and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2018-05-29 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set during the ‘swinging sixties’, Jump and Dance is a story that brings to life the changing music and fashion of the era. J. L. Walker’s debut novel shows how aligning yourself with one group, in this case the Mods, brought with it excitement and danger not only from the Rockers, but also the dying breed of Teddy boys. With a backdrop of unforgettable music, Walker portrays this magical and frightening time to be a teenager. At the heart of this novel is a story of meeting someone, falling desperately in love and trying to make sense of it all at such a young and impressionable age. The story depicts a time when love, death, drugs and violence sat uneasily side by side, all held together by music, freedom and creativity. Readers follow a young man as he attempts to find his feet in the adult world, struggling with the transition and leaving the security of school behind him. Inspired by his own experience of the 1960s, J. L. Walker’s Jump and Dance offers readers a story of gritty desperation tinged with humour and brings to life this unique and unforgettable era.
Download or read book The Story of My Life By Shayna written by Greta Marsh and published by 1st World Publishing. This book was released on 2003-04-15 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of my life is about dog racing and a good deal more. It is about cruelty, the human capacity for cruelty towards human animals and animals of other species. Dog racing, commonly known as Greyhound racing, is not a sport because no legitimate sport uses enslaved/involuntary participants and murders many of them once they start losing and no longer are competitive and profitable. Dog racing is, in fact, a deadly form of entertainment, as are horse racing, dog fighting, cock fighting, hunting and circuses that use enslaved other-specied animals. Incidentally, I remember Greta talking about a form of entertainment that was popular in Ancient Rome and which took place in public arenas. There enslaved humans known as gladiators were forced to engage in deadly combat against each other to the delight of cheering crowds. Often the losing gladiator was killed outright, and sometimes he lived depending upon the mood of the spectators. Unlike some spectator sports whose fans identify with and form emotional attachments to the athletes, dog racing fans care little or nothing about the Greyhounds. This detachment can be attributed to the racers' short racing careers; some race for just one season or part of a season at a specific track, and then are shipped elsewhere. But let's return to my story. Please know that I am real, as are other characters. On the other hand, some characters are not real. They are fictional. And although some of the events discussed in Part One are based on real happenings, some are not, and Part One is a work of fiction. In conclusion, I hope with all my heart that this book touches the hearts and minds of its readers. - Shayna Lanesboro, MA (1998)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the USA TODAY bestselling author of Sweet Thing and Nowhere But Here comes a love story about a Craigslist “missed connection” post that gives two people a second chance at love fifteen years after they were separated in New York City. To the Green-eyed Lovebird: We met fifteen years ago, almost to the day, when I moved my stuff into the NYU dorm room next to yours at Senior House. You called us fast friends. I like to think it was more. We lived on nothing but the excitement of finding ourselves through music (you were obsessed with Jeff Buckley), photography (I couldn’t stop taking pictures of you), hanging out in Washington Square Park, and all the weird things we did to make money. I learned more about myself that year than any other. Yet, somehow, it all fell apart. We lost touch the summer after graduation when I went to South America to work for National Geographic. When I came back, you were gone. A part of me still wonders if I pushed you too hard after the wedding… I didn’t see you again until a month ago. It was a Wednesday. You were rocking back on your heels, balancing on that thick yellow line that runs along the subway platform, waiting for the F train. I didn’t know it was you until it was too late, and then you were gone. Again. You said my name; I saw it on your lips. I tried to will the train to stop, just so I could say hello. After seeing you, all of the youthful feelings and memories came flooding back to me, and now I’ve spent the better part of a month wondering what your life is like. I might be totally out of my mind, but would you like to get a drink with me and catch up on the last decade and a half? M

Download or read book We Pointed Them North written by E.C. "Teddy Blue" Abbott and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2015-02-16 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: E. C. Abbott was a cowboy in the great days of the 1870's and 1880's. He came up the trail to Montana from Texas with the long-horned herds which were to stock the northern ranges; he punched cows in Montana when there wasn't a fence in the territory; and he married a daughter of Granville Stuart, the famous early-day stockman and Montana pioneer. For more than fifty years he was known to cowmen from Texas to Alberta as "Teddy Blue." This is his story, as told to Helena Huntington Smith, who says that the book is "all Teddy Blue. My part was to keep out of the way and not mess it up by being literary.... Because the cowboy flourished in the middle of the Victorian age, which is certainly a funny paradox, no realistic picture of him was ever drawn in his own day. Here is a self-portrait by a cowboy which is full and honest." And Teddy Blue himself says, "Other old-timers have told all about stampedes and swimming rivers and what a terrible time we had, but they never put in any of the fun, and fun was at least half of it." So here it is—the cowboy classic, with the "terrible" times and the "fun" which have entertained readers everywhere. First published in 1939, We Pointed Them North has been brought back into print by the University of Oklahoma Press in completely new format, with drawings by Nick Eggenhofer, and with the full, original text.
Download or read book Teddy s War written by Donald Willerton and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2020-12-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To Elias Gunnarson, his dad, Teddy, was part of “the greatest generation,” a man who fought valiantly in World War II, was honorably discharged, married his high school sweetheart, and lived happily ever after. Right? Wrong! The truth, he finds, lies shrouded in an intricately complex web bearing only superficial resemblance to the terrible reality lived by those who battled from the sands of Omaha Beach to the horrors of Dachau. As letters, videos, stories, and memories unfold the true tale of Teddy’s war, Elias learns that the lives of his mother, his father, and his father’s brother, Jake, were not what they seemed, and that dying a hero does not absolve a person from the sins of his past. In Teddy’s War, author Donald Willerton has crafted a heroic story of how one man’s love for his brother immerses them both in the life-changing horrors of World War II. It is a family saga built around the bond between two brothers, an action-filled story of how the war drove them into the darkest corners of humanity, and a philosophical inquiry into the central questions of love and loyalty.

Download or read book Risky Business written by William D. Romanowski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of motion pictures in the popularity of rock music became increasingly significant in the latter twentieth century. Rock music and its interaction with film is the subject of this significant book that re-examines and extends Serge Denisoff's pioneering observations of this relationship.Prior to Saturday Night Fever rock music had a limited role in the motion picture business. That movie's success, and the success of its soundtrack, began to change the silver screen. In 1983, with Flashdance, the situation drastically evolved and by 1984, ten soundtracks, many in the pop/rock genre, were certified platinum. Choosing which rock scores to discuss in this book was a challenging task. The authors made selections from seminal films such as The Graduate, Easy Rider, American Grafitti, Saturday Night Fever, Help!, and Dirty Dancing. However, many productions of the period are significant not because of their success, but because of their box office and record store failures.Risky Business chronicles the interaction of two major mediums of mass culture in the latter twentieth century. This book is essential for those interested in communications, popular culture, and social change.
