Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Socrates left no philosophical writings himself, but luckily he had a dog called Ted who faithfully learnt and interpreted his sayings. Through Ted and his canine friends, and with reference to famous philosophers, readers learn how dogs interpret the world. In the book, the canine characters reveal why they obey humans, what their view on freedom is, what they think about cats, what makes them happy and what makes them suffer. With humour and doggy wisdom, along with a bit of help from philosophers such as Plato, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and Diogenes, Ted and his friends reflect on friendship, love and life. Fully illustrated throughout, this picture book for adults explores important issues in a humorous and thoughtful way. Like Charlotte Fraser’s Dog, Teresa’s book contains many witty and heartwarming ideas, and the book can also be likened to Rupert Fawcett’s Off the Leash. The characters are simultaneously funny and serious in this book packed with irony, humour and playfulness which will appeal to dog owners and amateur philosophers alike.

Book Keeping Your Faith Through SoCrates s Journey

Download or read book Keeping Your Faith Through SoCrates s Journey written by Hope Isabella Lenkersdorf Smith and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-12-28 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of us believe in miracles, signs, and divine intervention. We are often both knowingly and unknowingly manifesting. Sometimes we get premonitions from our dreams which allows us to have deep connections with the universe. It's comforting for me to know that when I ask God for something in prayer along with a sign to assure me that my prayer will indeed be granted, God always sends me my sign. I also know that in my own life, all of the events that have happened and those still yet to come are being divinely orchestrated to lovingly guide me to where I am supposed to be and when I'm supposed to be there. If you look back at some of the events that have occurred in your life and connect them via "dots" from when the events started, you will see how each event allowed for the next event and how that event in turn allowed for the following event and so on. If you follow along in this manner, you will see why each dot was significantly important for the conclusion of the situation or event to take place as God and the universe intended. These concluding dots now allow for a new series of dots to begin so as God and the universe can once again lead you to the next conclusion. I call this concept "connecting the dots." Let me be clear about something: I believe that there are no coincidences in life, and everything happens to us for a reason. Although we all have free will to make the choices that we make every day, the destination we reach has already been lovingly predetermined by God. Whenever we do anything for the glory of God and which praises him, we will always achieve success, doors will be opened, and we will be blessed with everything good that God, our Father, wants and intends for us to have. God, our Father, wants all of his children to be happy, healthy, and enjoy an abundant life. These are the reasons that he made us in his image. We are all God's children, and he is our Father. Signs are all around us. They are not mere random occurrences that one could relate to any particular event. We only have to open our eyes, mind, heart, and soul to see that this is, in fact, the case. If we open ourselves in this way, it's easy to believe that these signs are real and meant for us. They are there to guide us along on our journey throughout our lives. It is sincerely my deepest desire that as you read the true to life stories of the many miracles granted to SoCrates and our family that you will be filled with hope and joy and be blessed with countless miracles just as we were. You only need to have faith in God and trust in him as I have learned to do. Ask and it shall be granted. Hope Isabella Lenkersdorf Smith

Book The Bleak Political Implications of Socratic Religion

Download or read book The Bleak Political Implications of Socratic Religion written by Shadia B. Drury and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-07-19 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book poses a radical challenge to the legend of Socrates bequeathed by Plato and echoed by scholars through the ages: that Socrates was an innocent sage convicted and sentenced to death by the democratic mob, for merely questioning the political and religious ideas of his time. This legend conceals an enigma: How could a sage who was pious and good be so closely associated with the treasonous Alcibiades, who betrayed Athens in the Peloponnesian war? How could Critias and Charmides, who launched a reign of terror in Athens after her defeat, have been among his students and closest associates? The book makes the case for the prosecution, denouncing the religion of Socrates for inciting a radical politics of absolutism and monism that continues to plague Western civilization. It is time to recognize that Socrates was no liberator of the mind, but quite the contrary—he was the architect of a frightful authoritarianism, which continues to manifest itself, not only in Islamic terror, but also in liberal foreign policy. Defending Homer and the tragic poets, the book concludes that the West has imbibed from the wrong Greeks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sin. Many Christians today have lost the ability to talk about it in personal terms. For the last quarter century the theological establishment, like society, has consigned the human predicament to structures of political and economic oppression or to systemic evil such as race and gender discrimination. In the process, people have lost interest in the internal workings of the human soul, attributing the evils of our world to social forces beyond the scope of personal responsibility.

Book The Philosopher s Dog

Download or read book The Philosopher s Dog written by Raimond Gaita and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this beautifully written book Raimond Gaita tells inspirational, poignant, sometimes funny but never sentimental stories of the dogs, cats and cockatoos that lived and died within his own family. He asks fascinating questions about animals: Is it wrong to attribute the concepts of love, devotion, loyalty, grief or friendship to them? Why do we care so much for some creatures but not for others? Why are we so concerned with proving that animals have minds? Reflecting on these questions, and drawing on the ideas of Descartes, Wittgenstein and J.M. Coetzee, Gaita pleads that we ask ourselves what it means to be creatures of ‘flesh and blood.’ He discusses mortality and sexuality, the relations between storytelling, philosophy and science and the spiritual love of mountains. An arresting and profound book, The Philosopher’s Dog is a triumph of both storytelling and philosophy. This Routledge Classics edition includes a substantial new introduction and afterword by the author.
