Book Technology and Bilateral Trade

Download or read book Technology and Bilateral Trade written by Jonathan Eaton and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We develop a Ricardian model to explore the role of trade in spreading the benefits of" innovation. The theory delivers an equation for bilateral trade that gravity specification, but identifies underlying parameters of technology. We estimate the" equation using trade in manufactures among the OECD. The parameter estimates allow us to" simulate the model to investigate the role of trade in spreading the benefits of innovation and to" examine the effects of lower trade barriers. Typically foreigners benefit by only a tenth as much" as the innovating country, but in some cases the benefits to close neighbors approach those of the" innovator.

Book Technology Diffusion on the International Trade Network

Download or read book Technology Diffusion on the International Trade Network written by Gary D. Ferrier and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New technologies generate positive externalities -- non-innovators can benefit through the adoption or imitation of the new technologies. International trade serves as a major channel for technology diffusion, allowing importing countries to acquire technical knowledge that they can potentially internalize. To empirically test the effects of trade on technology diffusion, the previous literature typically considers the effects of direct (bilateral) trade on indirect measures of technologies (e.g., TFP). We conjecture that the impact of trade on technology diffusion would be more accurately measured by taking into account both the direct and indirect network effects and by using direct measures of technologies (e.g., intensity levels). The international trade system can be considered as a weighted network. Technology may be diffused, not only bilaterally between countries, but also through the network effects, i.e., indirectly by trading with intermediate countries. We find that the network effects of trade play a significant role in technology diffusion. In most cases, countries better-connected on the trade network have higher technology intensities. Further support for the importance of trade is provided by our finding that for “outdated” technologies, better-connected countries have lower technology intensities.

Book Deep Integration Global Firms and Technology Spillovers

Download or read book Deep Integration Global Firms and Technology Spillovers written by Naoto Jinji and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book explores the impact of deep regional economic integration on spillovers of knowledge and technology across countries. Deep integration through signing deep regional trade agreements (DRTAs), which cover various policy areas in addition to tariff reductions, may or may not facilitate technology spillovers among their signatories. To understand the mechanism of the impact of deep integration on technology spillovers, this book starts by analyzing the behavior of global firms. Factors that affect global firms' activities, such as export, foreign direct investment (FDI), offshore outsourcing, are examined. Micro data on Japanese firms are employed for the analysis. Then, the relationships between bilateral trade patterns and technology spillovers and between types of FDI and technology spillovers are investigated in detail. Patent citation data are used to measure technology spillovers. Finally, the impact of DRTAs on international technology spillovers is analyzed. This book is highly recommended to readers who are interested in the effects of deep regional integration, including academic scholars, policymakers, and graduate students. [Resumen de la editorial]

Book excerpt: This paper studies how cross-country differences in the allocation of technology affect bilateral trade. Do both the stock and dispersion of technology matter for exports? We build on Eaton and Kortum (2002) and develop a Ricardian model where the process of innovation determines both the stock and dispersion of technology in each country. Like in the EK model, a higher stock of technology and lower relative input costs foster exports. Unlike in the EK model, a country's overall comparative advantage depends on the country-specific dispersion of technology which governs the advantage of having lower input costs. In particular, a smaller technological dispersion benefits countries with lower input costs since trade is determined by these and not technological differences. The opposite is true for a high dispersion. To test our model we create a novel dataset of historical patents and use these to construct our technology variables. Our results confirm our model's predictions and indicate that technological innovation matters for trade through both the stock of patents and their dispersion across the economy.

Book Geography and Trade

Download or read book Geography and Trade written by Paul Krugman and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1992-11-13 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I have spent my whole professional life as an international economist thinking and writing about economic geography, without being aware of it," begins Paul Krugman in the readable and anecdotal style that has become a hallmark of his writings. Krugman observes that his own shortcomings in ignoring economic geography have been shared by many professional economists, primarily because of the lack of explanatory models. In Geography and Trade he provides a stimulating synthesis of ideas in the literature and describes new models for implementing a study of economic geography that could change the nature of the field. Economic theory usually assumes away distance. Krugman argues that it is time to put it back - that the location of production in space is a key issue both within and between nations.

Book The impact of information and communication technology ICT on international trade in agri food products

Download or read book The impact of information and communication technology ICT on international trade in agri food products written by Franziska Thiemann and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2013-11-13 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid diffusion of information and communication technologies (ICT) is believed to be one of several important drivers of international trade and globalisation. The purpose of this dissertation was to analyse whether the three ICT - fixed telephone lines, mobile phones, and the internet - has encouraged international trade in important agri-food products. Gravity models of bilateral trade between countries were chosen to explain international trade. We used panel data of the values of bilateral trade between pairs of countries for the period 1995 to 2009. The empirical results from OLS and negative binomial regression estimation suggest that ICT has an effect on international trade in agri-food products. The impact is, however, not always strong and, contrary to expectations, it is often negative. For the products, ‘wine’ and ‘fruit and vegetable juice’, we found no effect of ICT on trade at all. Although there is great variation in the estimated impacts of individual ICT on international trade, the impact of mobile phones is somewhat stronger than that of fixed telephone lines and of the internet.

Book Technological Leadership and Sustainable Growth in a Bilateral Trade Model

Download or read book Technological Leadership and Sustainable Growth in a Bilateral Trade Model written by Francisco Cabo and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper develops a trade model for a technologically leading country and a developing country that exploits a renewable natural resource. Technology diffuses from the technological leader to the developing country through foreign direct investment (FDI). Alternatively, innovative activities can also be carried out in the developing economy. We prove the existence and uniqueness of an equilibrium path along which both countries grow at the same rate, maintaining the natural-resource stock at a constant level. The saddle-point property for this equilibrium is proved and a sensitivity analysis is carried out. The steady-state growth rate and consumption under both scenarios are compared and the effect of resource abundance analyzed.

Book Hub and Spokes Free Trade Agreements in the Presence of Technology Spillovers

Download or read book Hub and Spokes Free Trade Agreements in the Presence of Technology Spillovers written by Gouranga Gopal Das and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a comparative-static general equilibrium model in the context of the Western Hemisphere, this paper compares the economic effects of a “hub-and-spokes” type of bilateral trade configuration (with Chile being the hub) with those of a more comprehensive regional FTA (namely, the FTAA). The model is augmented to account for the possibility of technology spillovers and its effective assimilation among participating economies. In particular, absorptive capacity, governance factor, proximity and socio-institutional congruence conjointly determine an economy's capacity to capture the technology that is transmitted from the developed spoke United States to other regions.
