Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the 5th survey of advanced manufacturing technologies. It is based on a new list of advanced technologies developed with the help of experts in manufacturing. New technologies include modeling and simulation technologies, flexible manufacturing systems and artificial vision systems for inspecting or testing parts. The survey includes general characteristics of firms, adoption of advanced technologies, use of business practices, the development and implementation of advanced technologies, skill requirements, results of adoption, obstacles to adoption, research and development and electronic communication.

Book The Determinants of the Adoption Lag for Advanced Manufacturing Technologies

Download or read book The Determinants of the Adoption Lag for Advanced Manufacturing Technologies written by John R. Baldwin and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the determinants of the adoption lag for advanced technologies in the Canadian manufacturing sector. It uses plant-level data collected on the length of the adoption lag (the time between a firm's first becoming aware of a new technology and its adoption of the technology) to examine the extent to which the adoption lag is a function of the benefits and costs associated with technology adoption as well as certain plant characteristics that are proxies for a plant's receptor capabilities. Economic theory suggests that the diffusion of advanced technologies should be a function of the benefits associated with the adoption of new technologies. Other studies have had to proxy the benefits with environmental characteristics--like proximity to markets, fertility of soils, and size of firm. This paper makes use of more direct evidence collected from the 1993 Survey of Innovation and Advanced Technology concerning firms' own evaluations of the benefits and costs of adoption along with measures of overall technological competency. Both are found to be highly significant determinants of the adoption lag. Geographical nearness of suppliers decreases the adoption lag. Variables that have been previously used to proxy the benefits associated with technology adoption--variables such as larger firm size, younger age, and more diversification by the parent firm--also decrease the adoption lag, but they have much less effect than the direct measure of benefits and firm competency.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines differences in technology use in Canada as opposed to the United States as well as reasons for these differences. It examines different aspects of technology use - numbers of technologies used, types of technologies used, as well as regional, size and industry variations in their use. It then investigates differences in benefits that plant managers perceive stem from advanced technology use and differences in the factors that managers assess as impediments. While managers in both countries generally place quite similar emphases on items in the list of benefits received and problems that have impeded adoption, there are significant differences that arise because of the smaller size of the Canadian market.

(John Russel) and published by Analytical Studies Branch, Statistics Canada. This book was released on 1995 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the factors influencing a firm's decision to train, using data taken from several recent Statistics Canada surveys that explore advanced technology use by Canadian manufacturing plants. Advanced technology adoption has been both rapid and pervasive, leading to concerns about whether technology use is associated with an increase or a decrease in workers' skills. Based on the data collected through two surveys, this paper examines the relationship between technology use and the skill level of workers. It does so by first reporting on the opinions of managers of Canadian manufacturing establishments, who indicate that technology use leads to skill increases. Second, this paper examines the relationship between a plant's decision to train and certain other characteristics of the plant, including its technology use. Third, it investigates the factors related to the location of training in order to determine whether the training done by plants imparts primarily generic skills or plant-specific skills. Finally, it reports on survey results that show plants that introduced new technologies had to increase their expenditures for training.
