Book Cooperative Research in the National Marine Fisheries Service

Download or read book Cooperative Research in the National Marine Fisheries Service written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-10-14 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years there has been growing interest in having fisheries stakeholders involved in various aspects of fisheries data collection and experimentation. This activity is generally known as cooperative research and may take many forms, including gear technology studies, bycatch avoidance studies, and surveys. While the process is not new, the current interest in cooperative research and the growing frequency of direct budgetary allocation for cooperative research prompted this report. Cooperative Research in the National Marine Fisheries Service addresses issues essential for the effective design and implementation of cooperative and collaborative research programs.

Book Management of Marine Fisheries in Canada

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes and evaluates the impact of the major changes in the management of Canada's marine fisheries in recent decades. The report covers the historical and jurisdictional context; biological and economic aspects; objectives of fisheries management; techniques of resources management in general and those used for specific species; managing the common property through allocation of access, limited entry licensing, and individual quotas; the international dimension; the social dimension; habitat management; fisheries enforcement; and fisheries management in the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, Iceland, and the European Community.

Book A Global Assessment of Fisheries Bycatch and Discards

Download or read book A Global Assessment of Fisheries Bycatch and Discards written by Dayton L. Alverson and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 1994 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors estimate that between 17.9 and 39.5 million tons (average 27.0 million) of fish are discarded each year in commercial fisheries. These estimates are based on a review of over 800 papers. The highest quantities of discards are from the Northwest Pacific while tropical shrimp trawl fisheries generate a higher proportion of discards than any other fishery type, accounting for one third of the global total. Of four major gear groups, shrimp trawls stand alone at the top of the list; bottom trawls, long-lines and pot fisheries come next. The third group consists of Japanese high-seas drift net fisheries, Danish seines and purse seines for capelin. Relatively low levels result from pelagic trawls, small pelagic purse seines and some of high seas drift nets. The authors point to inadequate data to determine the biological, ecological, economic and cultural impacts of discards although economic losses run to billions of dollars. However, it appears most likely that socio-cultural attitudes towards marine resources will guide international discard policies. Techniques to reduce bycatch levels including traditional net selectivity, fishing gear development and time/area restrictions, are discussed. Effort reduction, incentive programmes and individual transferable quotas (that make the vessel responsible for bycatch reduction) are seen as promising avenues for the future. However, quick solutions to the problem are unlikely and much more information is required. The publication includes a diskette with the complete Bycatch Database, which was compiled for the study, and a summary of it.

Book Mortality of Fish Escaping Trawl Gears

Download or read book Mortality of Fish Escaping Trawl Gears written by Petri Suuronen and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2005 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress has been made in reducing bycatch and discards through improving the selectivity of fishing gear. This publication examines the key factors affecting the stress, injury and mortality of fish arising from fishing processes, particularly when fish escape from trawl equipment. It seeks to identify improved methodological approaches and practices, and to consider the design of fishing gears and operations that reduce or eliminate such deaths, and to assess the problems associated with estimating the impact of unaccounted fish mortality.

This book was released on 2019-01-09 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Law Library presents the complete text of the Fisheries off West Coast States - Pacific Coast Groundfish Fishery Management Plan - Trawl Rationalization Program - Midwater Trawl Requirements (US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Regulation) (NOAA) (2018 Edition). Updated as of May 29, 2018 This final rule clarifies the regulatory requirements for vessels using midwater trawl gear in the Pacific Coast Groundfish Fishery Shorebased Individual Fishing Quota Program. This action is needed to eliminate inconsistencies and reduce confusion in the current regulations. For vessels targeting Pacific whiting, the action clarifies that the retention of prohibited and protected species is allowed until landing. The disposition of prohibited and protected species is specified consistent with the Pacific Coast Groundfish Fishery Management Plan (groundfish FMP), the Pacific Coast Salmon Fishery Management Plan (salmon FMP), and other applicable law.
