Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1985, Technology and Rural Women synthesizes the fragmented empirical evidence and the wide range of theoretical approaches on the effects of modernisation on women in the developing world. Using a multi-disciplinary methodology, empirical and sectoral overviews, and country case studies, it draws together the literature to clarify the issues and the policies. The book begins with a conceptual overview and analyses the applicability of traditional theories of technological change and impact on gender based distributional questions. It proceeds to compare the African and Asian experience, examines the African situation regionally, and then as a set of four country case studies. The authors find that the imperfections of rural factor markets have contributed to women’s concentration in labour intensive sectors, marked by low productivity and low returns. Biases in the agrarian structure and the extension services are largely responsible for the Institutionalisation of discrimination against women. Finally, the volume identifies the social, economic, and technical constraints to the diffusion of technologies relevant to rural women’s tasks. In the final chapter the book’s analysis is further refined and extended, so that its conclusions to both theory and policy making are clearly brought out, and areas of future research identified. This book is an essential read for students and scholars of labour economics, women’s studies and economics in general.

Download or read book Technological Change and Rural Third World Women written by Nurit Bird-David and published by Kit Pub. This book was released on 2000 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book evaluates the performance of the Sorghum and Millet Introduction Program (SMIP) in the Machakos District of Eastern Kenya, paying particular attention to women in their households and communities. It warns against generalizing about "Third World Women" and "subsistence farmers" and shows the importance of paying attention to culture to understand people's actions, resistance and preferences. Deep-rooted differences between the unconscious assumptions of "donors" and "recipients" may result in breakdowns in development cooperation. One incorrect assumption about Machakos' Akamba people is that they are subsistence farmers, with women doing most of the farming jobs, while male out-migration to towns results in a high portion of poor female-headed and female-operated households. Refuting this and other assumptions, the authors put forward practical suggestions for improving the program's success in introducing drought-resistant crops in Eastern Kenya's arid and semi-arid lands.

Download or read book Adoption of agricultural innovations by smallholder farmers in the context of HIV AIDS written by Faith N. Nguthi and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using tissue-cultured technology is a potentially important way for smallholder banana farmers to improve their yields and income. In the situation of the impoverishing effects of high HIV/AIDS-prevalence in a rural banana-farming community, this applies even more. The research documented in this book examines the balance between required inputs and potential benefits of applying the tissue-cultured technology among HIV/AIDS-affected and non-affected households in Maragua district, Central Kenya, using a livelihood approach. The results show that adoption of the technology and its continued use differs according to the resources endowment of the farming households. Lack of financial and physical capital, notably a water tank, inhibits adoption, irrespective of HIV/AIDS-status. However, households headed by elderly females dominate among the poor households and the HIV/AIDS-affected households. This illustrates how HIV/AIDS interfaces with poverty and, thereby, indirectly with the feasibility of sustainable technology adoption. The research also shows that livelihood decisions and strategies of farming households are influenced by land tenure status (having title deeds or not) and labour constraints at the household level. The latter arise as a consequence of HIV/AIDS-related morbidity and mortality.

Book excerpt: Women are central to overcoming rural poverty. They play a critical role in poverty reduction and food security because they are responsible for both production and reproduction. Rural women in developing countries have longer working days than men because of their triple roles as farmers, caretakers of their families and cash earners through income-generating activities and microfinance. In addition, increasing drought and deforestation in many parts of the world make women's workload even more burdensome as they have to walk ever-longer distances to find firewood and clean water. The multiple roles of women can act as an obstacle to development interventions, which often put additional pressure on women's time. Women's heavy workload reduces the time available for participation in project-related activities or affects their ability to care for their families. Ensuring women's access to labour-saving technologies for water, energy and farm-related activities is fundamental, and the need for such technologies is greater than it has ever been before. This timely publication looks back at three decades of experiences in introducing labour-saving technologies and practices to rural women and in combating persistent gender discrimination in access and control. It also takes into account major developments in science, technology and innovation over the last several years and shows they can benefit women.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This annual series, published in cooperation with the Women and International Development Program at Michigan State University, uses a multi-disciplinary approach to explore women's experiences across a wide range of geographical areas, economic sectors, and social institutions. The articles presented in each volume synthesize a growing body of literature on key issues, suggest priorities for research, and propose changes in development policy and programming. Each volume is divided into three major sections. In the first, contributors distill and interpret research in review articles; in the second–a trend report–they provide original analyses of existing data sets; and in the final section, they analyze a specific research concern from varying perspectives.
