Book Technique of Sculpture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Technique of Sculpture Classic Reprint written by William Ordway Partridge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Technique of Sculpture In his book Art for America the author has attempted to show that sculpture is not declining, that so far from being a lost art, it is one that we have only now thoroughly discovered, and that the American people are actually on the threshold of an art era that may, if properly evolved, prove as beautiful, expressive, and inspiring as is the sublime sculpture of Greece. More nonsense is taught and written to-day about sculpture than about any other of the arts. It is full time we gave to this subject the serious consideration it merits. It has been the aim, in this book, to speak of the art as it really is, and the work is given forth with the hope that it may result in the creation, to some extent, of a fresh interest in sculpture. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Sculpture Much that might properly occur in the preface of this book will be found in its opening chapter. I there set out. The ground to be covered, and define the point of view from which I have treated my facts. These few remarks will, accordingly, be addressed to any who may think that a work bearing the title A History of Sculpture requires a word of introduction. My justification for the title and, indeed, for the work as a whole, is that I have not attempted to write a new text-book. In my view, all great art is essentially national art. It can therefore only be understood in the light of national and international history. For this reason, I have given much more attention to the artistic interpreta tion of historical events and social circumstances than most historians of the arts have deemed necessary. Throughout I have written from the standpoint of one who believes that the great schools of sculpture were created, not by individuals of genius, but by the peoples to whom they appealed. A work written on these lines can fairly claim to be A History of Sculpture. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A History of Ancient Sculpture Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of Ancient Sculpture Classic Reprint written by Lucy Myers Mitchell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-16 with total page 802 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Ancient Sculpture Fragments of a great artistic past have come down to us, now torn from their original surroundings, and wrapped in mystery to our changed modern world. For centuries these monuments have lain buried beneath the soil, or, when visible, have too often suffered sadly from neglect. Sundering from this vast treasure what belongs to the plastic art, we find the sculptural monuments widely scattered, and often hopelessly isolated, so that a feeling of discouragement will sometimes come over one attempting to solve the riddles propounded. Here it is that the archaeologist comes to our aid, with his new-born science, which dates hardly farther back than the days of Winckelmann; and bringing to bear upon his subject the patient labor of the excavator and of the conscientious collector, the resources of profound learn ing and of a comparative spirit, and the breadth of a scientific vision which is able to classify and group the sundered fragments, he makes the dis jointed members more and more parts of an organic whole. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Ancient Sculpture, Vol. 1 Following, then, the guidance of the band of scholars who have so gloriously commenced this task, I have attempted in the present work to treat the sculptural monuments of the different nations of antiquity, and to build up some semblance of the stately fabric of old. Many, alas! Are the blocks still lacking to complete the structure of an exhaustive history of ancient sculpture; but if we surround the mute monuments existing, with the faiths out of which they Sprung, and pour upon them the light of national custom and thought, they will become eloquent witnesses to the art-life of those remote ages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of Greek Sculpture I have not felt able to embody his conclusions in the text Of a handbook for students. In dealing with the later portion of the history of sculpture, I have endeavoured to follow the same principles as in the earlier portion, and consequently I am again precluded from the discussion of many interesting problems as to which I do not feel justified in expressing a dogmatic opinion, while I have not space to give, even in summary, the arguments on each side. I regret that I am unable to fulfil my conditional promise Of an appendix on the discoveries of the French excavators at Delphi, no Official publication having as yet been issued. Book A History of Greek Sculpture Vol 2 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of Greek Sculpture Vol 2 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Alexander Stuart Murray and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Greek Sculpture, Vol. 2 of 2 IT may be that an acquaintance with the personality of an artist, does not promote in the end a true judgment of his work. But we cannot deny that it has often furnished the pages of the historian with charm and vivacity. The History of Greek Sculpture presents no such opportunity. It has no Lives to beguile the student along an arduous path. Only here and there an incident, handed down on mostly a dubious authority, breaks the narrative of work done and the examination of what remains of it to our day. The sculptors of ancient Greece seem to have lost themselves in their art, and this might have been a less misfortune for us, if it also had not since their time disappeared in a great measure. Download or read book The History of American Sculpture Classic Reprint written by Lorado Taft and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-17 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of American Sculpture No more composite nation than the United States has existed in modern times. The influx of foreign elements has been enormous; yet, despite the varied antecedents and the wide affinities of the American people, our language remains English and our traditions (such as exist) are and always have been English. In matters of religion and law, the inheritance was adequate, and familiar princi ples were readily harmonized with a new environment. In our literature, likewise, the ancestral traditions have been positive and potent; but in regard to the other fine arts they have been negative, though not less significant, since they explain, in large measure, the unpromising conditions amid which our national art was cradled. Download or read book A Handbook of Greek and Roman Sculpture Classic Reprint written by Edmund Von Mach and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-09 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of Greek and Roman Sculpture Part Ten - Portraits - is the least complete part of the collection, especially as regards Roman portraits. This had to be so, because the number of extant Roman por traits is so large that even a fair selection from them would have been out of proportion to the other parts of the book. No attempt, therefore, has been made to give portraits of all men of note. The aim rather has been to select statues and busts which illustrate the develop ment of portrait-sculpture, irrespective of the persons portrayed. In Part Eleven - Heads the specialist may miss some favorite specimens, but here again the material from which to draw is so large that a rigid sifting process became necessary. The principle followed was similar to that adopted for Part Ten. Heads were included in the list when they illustrated the development of sculpture, and often excluded, although with considerable regret, when their chief claim to attention was based on their pleasing appearance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the Ancient Greek Sculptors AM happy to accept the suggestion that I should with a few words introduce Miss Legge's book. In the first place, having read the book in manuscript, I can affirm that it is trustworthy, giving a sketch of what is most clear and definite in our knowledge of Greek sculpture. That it will be a very good thing to accustom young people to the healthful and beautiful forms in' which Greek sculpture delighted, seems quite clear. For one thing, all educational reformers insist on the necessity of systematically accustom ing boys and girls to use their eyes, to observe accurately and minutely. Those who are instructed in physical science learn to look at objects with care; but this point is neglected in literary edu cation. To see rightly what is brought before the eyes is no easy matter; cannot, in fact, be done except as the result of training. Yet to have this power is an inestimable benefit all through life.
