Book NAEP 1992 Mathematics Report Card for the Nation and the States

Download or read book NAEP 1992 Mathematics Report Card for the Nation and the States written by Ina V. S. Mullis and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the mathematics assessment results from the 1992 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). The assessment included nearly 250,000 fourth-, eighth-, and twelfth-grade students attending approximately 10,000 schools across the nation and the states. Students' performance is categorized into three achievement levels: Basic, Proficient, and Advanced. Among the major findings were that: (1) for the nation there were statistically significant increases in average mathematics proficiency in all grades and in both public and private schools from 1990 to 1992; (2) despite these positive findings, 60 percent of the students in grades 4, 8, and 12 were estimated to be at or above the Basic level on the 1992 mathematics assessment; (3) considerable variation in performance existed within and across states and territories; (4) increases in mathematics proficiency between 1990 and 1992 did little to alter the relative standings of the demographic groups; (5) gains were noted in the content areas of numbers and operations, measurement, geometry, data analysis, and algebra, and (6) one-fifth of the 4th graders, two-thirds of the 8th graders, and 90 percent of the 12th graders demonstrated ability in solving two-step problems involving multiplication and division. Chapter 1 contains overall achievement results for the states by grade and by state. Chapter 2 contains results for the nation and states by the demographic groups of race/ethnicity (White, Black, Hispanic, Asian/Pacific Islander, American Indian); gender; type of community (advantaged urban, disadvantaged urban, extreme rural, and other); parents' highest level of education; and type of school (public, Catholic, private). Chapter 3 contains national and state mathematical content areas of estimation, numbers and operations, measurement, geometry, statistics, algebra, and functions. The four appendices, one-third of the document, discuss NAEP's anchor-level results, the guidelines for sample participation, state contextual background factors, and an overview of the procedures used in the 1992 mathematics assessments. Book Indicators of Children s Well Being

Download or read book Indicators of Children s Well Being written by Robert M. Hauser and published by Russell Sage Foundation. This book was released on 1997-12-04 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The search for reliable information on the well-being of America's young is vital to designing programs to improve their lives. Yet social scientists are concerned that many measurements of children's physical and emotional health are inadequate, misleading, or outdated, leaving policymakers ill-informed. Indicators of Children's Well-Being is an ambitious inquiry into current efforts to monitor children from the prenatal period through adolescence. Working with the most up-to-date statistical sources, experts from multiple disciplines assess how data on physical development, education, economic security, family and neighborhood conditions, and social behavior are collected and analyzed, what findings they reveal, and what improvements are needed to create a more comprehensive and policy-relevant system of measurement. Today's climate of welfare reform has opened new possibilities for program innovation and experimentation, but it has also intensified the need for a clearly defined and wide-ranging empirical framework to pinpoint where help is needed and what interventions will succeed. Indicators of Children's Well-Being emphasizes the importance of accurate studies that address real problems. Essays on children's material well-being show why income data must be supplemented with assessments of housing, medical care, household expenditure, food consumption, and education. Other contributors urge refinements to existing survey instruments such as the Census and the Current Population Survey. The usefulness of records from human service agencies, child welfare records, and juvenile court statistics is also evaluated.

Book Results and Interpretations of the 1990 Through 2000 Mathematics Assessments of the National Assessment of Educational Progress

Download or read book Results and Interpretations of the 1990 Through 2000 Mathematics Assessments of the National Assessment of Educational Progress written by Peter Kloosterman and published by National Council of Teachers of English. This book was released on 2004 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often referred to as "The Nation's Report Card," the mathematics assessments of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) have come to be regarded by many policymakers as the primary yardstick by which to judge our schools' success in meeting national expectations. This monograph reports and interprets trends in NAEP mathematics data collected between 1990 and 2000.

Book Results from the Sixth Mathematics Assessment of the National Assessment of Educational Progress

Download or read book Results from the Sixth Mathematics Assessment of the National Assessment of Educational Progress written by Patricia Ann Kenney and published by National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. This book was released on 1997 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) provides data about what children know and can do with the goal of using this information to improve education. This book contains interpretive reports based on results from the mathematics assessments conducted by the NAEP regarding: (1) the cognitive performance of students at grades 4, 8, and 12 on multiple-choice, regular constructed-response, and extended constructed response items; (2) students' responses to a variety of background questions dealing with their beliefs and feelings toward mathematics and their participation in various forms of classroom activity; and (3) teachers' responses to various background questions dealing with the nature of their mathematics instruction. The results are summarized for the different grade levels and subgroups of students by gender and race/ethnicity. Chapters include: (1) "Learning about NAEP: Information Concerning the Sixth Mathematics Assessment" (Patricia Ann Kenney); (2) "NAEP Mathematics-1990-1992: The National, Trial State, and Trend Assessments" (John A. Dossey and Ina V. S. Mullis); (3) "NAEP Findings Regarding Race/Ethnicity and Gender: Affective Issues, Mathematics Performance, and Instructional Context" (Edward A. Silver, Marilyn E. Strutchens, and Judith S. Zawojewski); (4) "NAEP Findings Regarding the Preparation and Classroom Practices of Mathematics Teachers" (Mary Montgomery Lindquist); (5) "What Do Students Know about Numbers and Operations?" (Vicky L. Kouba, Judith S. Zawojewski, and Marilyn E. Strutchens); (6) "What Do Students Know about Measurement?" (Patricia Ann Kenney and Vicky L. Kouba); (7) "What Do Students Know about Geometry?" Book Cross state Data Compendium for the NAEP 1994 Grade 4 Reading Assessment

Download or read book Cross state Data Compendium for the NAEP 1994 Grade 4 Reading Assessment written by Karen E. Miller and published by Department of Education. This book was released on 1995 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intended as a companion document to the "NAEP 1994 Reading Report Card for the Nation and States" and the "NAEP 1994 Reading State Report," this compendium presents fourth-grade cross-state results of the National Assessment in Educational Process (NAEP) 1994 Trial State Assessment in reading--no interpretations of the data are made. Chapter 1 presents the results for the nation; results for each of the four regions; and each of the participating jurisdictions in the context of the overall average reading proficiency, reading proficiency by the two purposes of reading, and the NAEP reading achievement levels. Chapter 2 presents similar information for selected subpopulations: race/ethnicity, gender, type of location, parents' education level, Title 1 participation, and type of school. School and classroom characteristics and methods of reading instruction are examined in chapters 3 and 4. Chapter 5 contains teachers' reports on their professional development; chapter 6 deals with students' reports of their independent reading behaviors. Contains 65 tables of data. Appendixes provide a summary of participation rates, reporting subgroup(s) definitions, advice on drawing inferences from the results, and revisions to the 1992 and 1994 findings. (RS)
