Book Identification of Factors Which Influence the Technical Inefficiency of Indian Farmers

Download or read book Identification of Factors Which Influence the Technical Inefficiency of Indian Farmers written by Tim Coelli and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The agricultural production of Indian farmers is investigated using a stochastic frontier production function which incorporates a model for the technical inefficiency effects. Farm-level data from the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) are used. Variables considered in the model for the inefficiency effects include the age and level of education of the farmers, farm size and the year of observation. The parameters of the stochastic frontier production function are estimated simultaneously with those involved in the model for the inefficiency effects. This approach differs from the usual practice of predicting farm-level inefficiency effects and then regressing these upon various factors in a second-stage of modelling. The results indicate that the above factors do have a significant influence upon the inefficiency effects of farmers in two of the three villages considered.

Book Farm Size Productivity Relationship in Post Green Revolution Punjab

Download or read book Farm Size Productivity Relationship in Post Green Revolution Punjab written by Dr. Livneet Shergill and published by Writers Choice Publications Pvt Ltd. This book was released on 2022-10-01 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to examine the nature and dynamics of the farm size-productivity relationship, which is one of the central questions in Indian agriculture. It is generally believed that big farms are more productive than small farms. In 1962, noble laureate A. K. Sen’s seminal paper on the subject busted this popularly held view. He put forth the thesis that Indian agriculture exhibits inverse farm size productivity relationship, implying thereby that small farms produce more output per acre as compared to big farms. With the advent of Green revolution technology, this debate once again erupted among the Indian economists. Green Revolution was most successful in Punjab, the frontrunner in the usage of modern agricultural practices and modern farm machinery. Therefore, Punjab was the state which could provide the best insight into the farm size-productivity relationship under Green Revolution. This book makes an effort to test whether the farm size-productivity inverse relationship that existed in traditional Indian agriculture is still holding on in this modern period or had disappeared, with Punjab as the focus of study.

Book Agricultural Productivity

Download or read book Agricultural Productivity written by Virgil Ball and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-04-30 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agricultural Productivity: Measurement and Sources of Growth addresses measurement issues and techniques in agricultural productivity analysis, applying those techniques to recently published data sets for American agriculture. The data sets are used to estimate and explain state level productivity and efficiency differences, and to test different approaches to productivity measurement. The rise in agricultural productivity is the single most important source of economic growth in the U.S. farm sector, and the rate of productivity growth is estimated to be higher in agriculture than in the non-farm sector. It is important to understand productivity sources and to measure its growth properly, including the effects of environmental externalities. Both the methods and the data can be accessed by economists at the state level to conduct analyses for their own states. In a sense, although not explicitly, the book provides a guide to using the productivity data available on the website of the U.S. Department of Agriculture/Economic Research Service. It should be of interest to a broad spectrum of professionals in academia, the government, and the private sector.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses poverty and well-being, equity, and efficiency in selected African countries. The chapters focus on three main topics: studies in the measurement and analysis of well-being and vulnerability to poverty, women's empowerment, and the dynamics and determinants of income and efficiency among smallholders. The chapters in the first section examine poverty, well-being, and vulnerability to poverty, as well as social exclusion, with a focus on households in Ethiopia, Rwanda, and Tanzania. They highlight the need to consider multidimensional measures of well-being and vulnerability to poverty, the need to address the distribution of vulnerability across different segments of the population, as well as the importance of developing public policies aimed at poverty reduction and promoting the well-being of the poor. The next section deals with issues related to women’s empowerment, including a multidimensional case study of women’s empowerment in Ghana and women’s access to microfinance services in Ethiopia. The final section focuses on dynamics and determinants of income and efficiency among farm households in Ethiopia and Uganda. Using a variety of methodologies, this volume provides a multifaceted approach to studying poverty and well-being in a diverse range of locations. As such, it of use to undergraduate and graduate students studying African economics or economics of poverty and well-being, and will be appealing to public policymakers and international aid agencies.
