Book A Review of the Next Generation Air Transportation System

Download or read book A Review of the Next Generation Air Transportation System written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Next Generation Air Transportation System's (NextGen) goal is the transformation of the U.S. national airspace system through programs and initiatives that could make it possible to shorten routes, navigate better around weather, save time and fuel, reduce delays, and improve capabilities for monitoring and managing of aircraft. A Review of the Next Generation Air Transportation provides an overview of NextGen and examines the technical activities, including human-system design and testing, organizational design, and other safety and human factor aspects of the system, that will be necessary to successfully transition current and planned modernization programs to the future system. This report assesses technical, cost, and schedule risk for the software development that will be necessary to achieve the expected benefits from a highly automated air traffic management system and the implications for ongoing modernization projects. The recommendations of this report will help the Federal Aviation Administration anticipate and respond to the challenges of implementing NextGen.

Book Securing the Future of U S Air Transportation

Download or read book Securing the Future of U S Air Transportation written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-11-18 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As recently as the summer of 2001, many travelers were dreading air transportation because of extensive delays associated with undercapacity of the system. That all changed on 9/11, and demand for air transportation has not yet returned to peak levels. Most U.S. airlines continue to struggle for survival, and some have filed for bankruptcy. The situation makes it difficult to argue that strong action is urgently needed to avert a crisis of undercapacity in the air transportation system. This report assesses the visions and goals for U.S. civil aviation and technology goals for the year 2050.

Book Air Transport and Regional Development Methodologies

Download or read book Air Transport and Regional Development Methodologies written by Anne Graham and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-12-27 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Air Transport and Regional Development Methodologies is one of three interconnected books related to a four-year European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) Action established in 2015. The action, called Air Transport and Regional Development (ATARD), aimed to promote a better understanding of how the air transport–related problems of core regions and remote regions should be addressed to enhance both economic competitiveness and social cohesion in Europe. This book discusses key methodological approaches to assessing air transport and regional development, outlining their respective strengths and weaknesses. These include input- output analysis, cost benefit analysis, computable general equilibrium models, data envelopment analysis, stochastic frontier analysis, discrete choice models and game theory. Air Transport and Regional Development Methodologies aims at becoming a major reference source on the topic, drawing from experienced researchers in the field, covering the diverse experience and knowledge of the members of the COST Action. The book will be of interest to several large groups. First, it will serve as an authoritative and comprehensive reference for academics, researchers and consultants. Second, it will advise policy- makers and government organizations at European, national and regional levels. Third, it presents invaluable insights to transport companies such as airports and airline operators. Along with the other two books (Air Transport and Regional Development Policies and Air Transport and Regional Development Case Studies), it fills a much-needed gap in the literature.

  • Pages : 216 pages

Download or read book Clipping the Clouds written by Marc Dierikx and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2008-06-30 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mixing in elements of pop culture, Dierikx provides a chronological history of the evolution of air travel. He covers the significant challenges and developments in air transportation for a specific period, starting with how and why aviation came to play an important role in international politics and economic relations. He follows with an examination of how improvements in technology influenced existing concepts of distance, created new travel patterns, and what effect the growth in numbers of passenger and cargo had on air transportation. Finally, Dierikx looks at how airlines have become increasingly detached from national interests and state control, concluding with an overview of the current state of air travel, and a description of the role air transportation played in the creation of a global society. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, it is difficult to imagine our world without aircraft. Airplanes are everywhere, and rapid air transport has become one of the necessities of our time. Yet one of the peculiarities of powered flight is that it has stayed in the public focus for over a century. Clipping the Clouds looks at the history of aviation in a challenging new way, covering not just the technology, but the way aviation has interacted with society since its very beginnings. Mixing in pop culture—each chapter opens and closes with an excerpt from a movie that depicts elements of air transport illustrating the chapter's theme—Dierikx provides a chronological history of the evolution of air travel since 1919. He covers the significant challenges and developments in air transportation for each of four chronological periods, starting with how and why aviation came to play an important role in international politics and economic relations. He follows with an examination of how improvements in technology influenced existing concepts of distance, created new travel patterns, and what effect the growth in numbers of passenger and cargo had on air transportation. Finally, Dierikx looks at how airlines have become increasingly detached from national interests and state control, concluding with an overview of the current state of air travel and a description of the role air transportation has played in the creation of a global society.

Book Air Transport and Regional Development Case Studies

Download or read book Air Transport and Regional Development Case Studies written by Anne Graham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-28 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is one of three inter-connected books related to a four-year European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) Action established in 2015. The Action, called Air Transport and Regional Development (ATARD), aimed to promote a better understanding of how the air transport related problems of core regions and remote regions should be addressed in order to enhance both economic competitiveness and social cohesion in Europe. This book focuses on case studies in Europe related to air transport and regional development. It is divided into four geographical regions after a general chapter that compares regional air transport connectivity between remote and central areas in Europe. The first region is Northern and Western Northern Europe (case studies related specifically to Norway, Finland, the United Kingdom, and Ireland); the second is Central and Eastern Europe, (Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Poland); the third is Central Western Europe (Belgium and Switzerland); and finally, the fourth is Southern Europe (Portugal, Spain, and Italy). There is no other single source publication that currently covers this topic area in such a comprehensive manner by considering so many countries. The book aims at becoming a major reference on the topic, drawing from experienced researchers in the field, covering the diverse experience and knowledge of the members of the COST Action. The book will appeal to academics, practitioners, and policymakers who have a particular interest in acquiring detailed comparative knowledge and understanding of air transport and regional development in many different European countries. Together with the other two books (Air Transport and Regional Development Methodologies and Air Transport and Regional Development Policies), it fills a much-needed gap in the literature.
