Book excerpt: A complete and up-to-date discussion of optimal split plot and split block designs Variations on Split Plot and Split Block Experiment Designs provides a comprehensive treatment of the design and analysis of two types of trials that are extremely popular in practice and play an integral part in the screening of applied experimental designs--split plot and split block experiments. Illustrated with numerous examples, this book presents a theoretical background and provides two and three error terms, a thorough review of the recent work in the area of split plot and split blocked experiments, and a number of significant results. Written by renowned specialists in the field, this book features: * Discussions of non-standard designs in addition to coverage of split block and split plot designs * Two chapters on combining split plot and split block designs and missing observations, which are unique to this book and to the field of study * SAS? commands spread throughout the book, which allow readers to bypass tedious computation and reveal startling observations * Detailed formulae and thorough remarks at the end of each chapter * Extensive data sets, which are posted on the book's FTP site The design and analysis approach advocated in Variations on Split Plot and Split Block Experiment Designs is essential in creating tailor-made experiments for applied statisticians from industry, medicine, agriculture, chemistry, and other fields of study.

Download or read book Stroke Genomics written by Simon J. Read and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-02-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With sequencing of the human genome now complete, deciphering the role of gene function in human neurological pathophysiology is a promise that has yet to be realized. More than most diseases, stroke has been keenly studied from a genomic perspective. Studies are numerous and incorporate data on stroke inheritance, chromosomal loci of risk, preclinical models of stroke, and differential gene expression of brain injury, repair, and recovery. The problem is no longer a lack of information but one of interpretation and prioritization of what we do know. The aims of Stroke Genomics: Methods and Reviews are twofold. First, it aims to provide the reader with cutting-edge reviews of clinical and preclinical genomics, written by leading experts in the field. In particular, the authors of certain chapters relate gene expression changes to physiological end points, such as functional imaging paradigms. Thus, a more holistic approach to gene expression is described, one in which molecular biology goes hand in hand with stroke pathophysiology. Second, detailed methods for study of the molecular biology of stroke are TM also included. Following the format of the Methods in Molecular Medicine series, these chapters will enable the reader to employ each technique without recourse to other methods texts. In its entirety, this book should provide the reader with the knowledge needed to design, execute, and interpret preclinical and clinical studies of stroke genomics.

Book Latin Squares

  • Author : József Dénes
  • Publisher : Elsevier
  • Release : 1991-01-24
  • ISBN : 0080867863
  • Pages : 469 pages

Download or read book Latin Squares written by József Dénes and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1991-01-24 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1974 the editors of the present volume published a well-received book entitled ``Latin Squares and their Applications''. It included a list of 73 unsolved problems of which about 20 have been completely solved in the intervening period and about 10 more have been partially solved. The present work comprises six contributed chapters and also six further chapters written by the editors themselves. As well as discussing the advances which have been made in the subject matter of most of the chapters of the earlier book, this new book contains one chapter which deals with a subject (r-orthogonal latin squares) which did not exist when the earlier book was written. The success of the former book is shown by the two or three hundred published papers which deal with questions raised by it.

Book Dictionary of Plant Breeding

Download or read book Dictionary of Plant Breeding written by Rolf H. J. Schlegel and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2009-10-14 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arguably one of the oldest scientific traditions, plant breeding began in Neolithic times, with methods as simple as saving the seeds of desirable plants and sowing them later. It was not until the re-encounter with Mendel’s discoveries thousands of years later that the genetic basis of breeding was understood. Developments since then have provided further insight into how genes acting alone, or in concert with other genes and the environment, result in a particular phenotype. From Abaxial to Zymogram, the Dictionary of Plant Breeding contains clear and useful definitions of the terms associated with plant breeding and related scientific/technological disciplines. This second edition of a bestseller defines jargon, provides helpful tables, examples, and breeding schemes, and includes a list of crop plants with salient details. Packed with data and organized to make that data easy to access, this revised and expanded reference provides comprehensive coverage of the latest discoveries in cytogenetics, molecular genetics, marker-assisted selection, experimental gene transfer, seed sciences, crop physiology, and genetically modified crops. A complex subject, plant breeding draws from many scientific and technological disciplines, often making it difficult to know the precise meanings of many terms and to accurately interpret specific concepts. Most dictionaries available are highly specific and fragmentary. As in the previous edition, this dictionary unifies concepts by including the specific terms of plant breeding and terms that are adjusted from other disciplines. Drawing on the author’s 30 years of experience, the dictionary provides an encyclopedic list of commonly used technical terms that reflect the latest developments in the field.

Book Association Schemes

  • Author : R. A. Bailey
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2004-02-26
  • ISBN : 9781139449939
  • Pages : 410 pages

Download or read book Association Schemes written by R. A. Bailey and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-02-26 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Association schemes are of interest to both mathematicians and statisticians and this book was written with both audiences in mind. For statisticians, it shows how to construct designs for experiments in blocks, how to compare such designs, and how to analyse data from them. The reader is only assumed to know very basic abstract algebra. For pure mathematicians, it tells why association schemes are important and develops the theory to the level of advanced research. This book arose from a course successfully taught by the author and as such the material is thoroughly class-tested. There are a great number of examples and exercises that will increase the book's appeal to both graduate students and their instructors. It is ideal for those coming either from pure mathematics or statistics backgrounds who wish to develop their understanding of association schemes.

Book excerpt: The year 2001 marks the centenary of Biometrika, one of the world's leading academic journals in statistical theory and methodology. In celebration of this, the book brings together two sets of papers from the journal. The first comprises seven specially commissioned articles (authors: D.R. Cox, A.C. Davison, Anthony C. Atkinson and R.A. Bailey, David Oakes, Peter Hall, T.M.F. Smith, and Howell Tong). These articles review the history of the journal and the most important contributions made by appearing in the journal in a number of important areas of statitisical activity, including general theory and methodology, surveys and time sets. In the process the papers describe the general development of statistical science during the twentieth century. The second group of ten papers are a selection of particularly seminal articles form the journal's first hundred years. The book opens with an introduction by the editors Professor D.M. Titterington and Sir David Cox.
