Book DIY Cultures and Underground Music Scenes

Download or read book DIY Cultures and Underground Music Scenes written by Andy Bennett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the global influence and impact of DIY cultural practice as this informs the production, performance and consumption of underground music in different parts of the world. The book brings together a series of original studies of DIY musical activities in Europe, North and South America, Asia and Oceania. The chapters combine insights from established academic writers with the work of younger scholars, some of whom are directly engaged in contemporary underground music scenes. The book begins by revisiting and re-evaluating key themes and issues that have been used in studying the cultural meaning of alternative and underground music scenes, notably aspects of space, place and identity and the political economy of DIY cultural practice. The book then explores how the DIY cultural practices that characterize alternative and underground music scenes have been impacted and influenced by technological change, notably the emergence of digital media. Finally, in acknowledging the over 40-year history of DIY cultural practice in punk and post-punk contexts, the book considers how DIY cultures have become embedded in cultural memory and the emotional geographies of place. Through combining high-quality data and fresh conceptual insights in the context of an international body of work spanning the disciplines of popular-music studies, cultural and media studies, and sociology the book offers a series of innovative new directions in the study of DIY cultures and underground/alternative music scenes. This volume will be of particular interest to undergraduate students in the above-mentioned fields of study, as well as an invaluable resource for established academics and researchers working in these and related fields.

Book Populism and Democracy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sascha Hardt
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2020
  • ISBN : 9789490947231
  • Pages : 376 pages

Download or read book Populism and Democracy written by Sascha Hardt and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are liberal democracies in decline? If they are, what role does populism play in this? What can and should democracies do to defend their core features against 'democratic decay'? And which features can be considered essential? These are difficult questions further complicated by the realisation that their answers depend on perspective. Populism and democratic decay are global phenomena but they play out differently in different countries and regions. They also cannot be properly understood through the lens of one discipline alone. This book brings together scholars of political science and law, who look at populism, democratic decay, and possible means to protect democratic constitutionalism from global, regional (European) and national angles. The book is made up of two parts. The first part discusses general aspects of populism. The second part of the book consists of seven country reports and one regional report; each analysing the success or failure of national constitutional safeguards against populism in the local constitutional and socio-political context. From East-Central Europe to the United Kingdom, from Italy to the Philippines, the pictures painted in these articles are diverse, yet enlightening and relevant from a comparative perspective. This volume is part of a research project on populism and democracy conducted at Maastricht University, Faculty of Law, and funded by the Statesman Thorbecke Fund at the Dutch Royal Academy of Sciences (knaw).

Book Mass Media and Communications

Download or read book Mass Media and Communications written by Dibyanshu Kumar and published by K.K. Publications. This book was released on 2021-09-11 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mass media are diversified media technologies that are intended to reach a large audience by mass communication. The technologies through which this communication takes place vary. In the late 20th Century, mass media could be classified into eight mass media industries: books, newspapers, magazines, recordings, radio, movies, television and the internet. With the explosion of digital communication technology in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, the question of what forms of media should be classified as “mass media” has become more prominent. Each mass media has its own content types, its own creative artists and technicians, and its own business models. For example, the Internet includes websites, blogs, podcasts, and various other technologies built on top of the general distribution network. The sixth and seventh media, internet and mobile, are often called collectively as digital media; and the fourth and fifth, radio and TV, as broadcast media. Some argue that video games have developed into a distinct mass form of media. Mass communication was seen by those who owned newspapers, radio and T.V. stations and by cinema producers mostly as an efficient device to reach messages to a very large number of people in a linear fashion. The media users were seen primarily as targets-passive targets for message intake and appropriate action either in voting as desired or buying products advertised or imbibing ideas intended by producers. Magic bullet theory suggests that messages were shot directly into the receiver. It assumes that receivers ate passive and defenseless and take whatever is shot at them. The magic bullet theory also portrays that the media have a direct immediate and powerful effect on those who pay attention to their contents. This book has been intended as a manual for students of this subject. Contents: • Television: The People (Crew) • Television: Past Present and Future • News Paper Organization and Management • Printed Media Industry: Theory and Practice • Media Organizations • Film in India • Participatory Journalism and Weblogs • Weblogs and Journalism

Book Chinese Migration to Europe

Download or read book Chinese Migration to Europe written by Graeme Johanson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-05-26 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through an analysis of Chinese migration to Europe, this volume examines the most pressing migration and integration issues facing many societies today, from the political and policy-based challenges of managing increasingly diverse communities, to individual lived experiences of identity and belonging. In addition to chapters on the UK, France and Italy, the book spotlights one of the most extraordinary examples of Chinese migration to Europe: that provided by the city of Prato, just 20km from Florence in Tuscany, Italy. Renowned for its historic textile industry, Prato is now home to one of the largest populations of Chinese residents in Europe, a phenomenon that is remarkable not only for its magnitude but also for the speed with which it has developed. This edited collection, which brings together twenty-seven separate contributors, deepens our understanding of the case of Prato within the context of Chinese migration to the new Europe.
