Book Integrated Korean

Download or read book Integrated Korean written by Young-mee Yu Cho and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2020-08-31 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Korean is the seventh most commonly spoken language in the U.S., and Korean heritage students—those with some proficiency in or a cultural connection to the language through family or community—outnumber others learning Korean at the college level. Many schools offer a separate heritage track for learning Korean, but until now there has been no textbook designed specifically for heritage or accelerated curriculum students. Integrated Korean: Accelerated 1 and 2 directly address the linguistic needs and abilities of heritage learners in a single academic year. Volume 1 presents lessons on thematically organized subjects, starting with familiar topics such as family, friends, daily routines, schoolwork, campus activities, dining out, and shopping. Volume 2 advances to more formal subjects beyond family and friends, such as travel, transportation, housing, holidays, lifestyles, careers, and Korean history and culture. Students approach the lessons with multi-level communicative classroom activities and reading materials with standards-based exercises and projects that not only address the particular language requirements of heritage learners, but also encourage them to participate more fully in their own family and community life. Each volume’s textbook and workbook offer authentic conversations and texts in both informal and formal contexts, structured tasks, and a wealth of interesting and relevant cultural content. Book Teaching Chinese Japanese and Korean Heritage Language Students

Download or read book Teaching Chinese Japanese and Korean Heritage Language Students written by Kimi Kondo-Brown and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-25 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contributes to building the research knowledge that language teaching professionals need in developing curriculum for the large population of East Asian heritage students (including Chinese, Japanese, and Korean) in countries like the United States, Canada, and Australia, where speakers of East Asian languages are among the fastest growing populations. Heritage learners are defined as those who initially acquired certain levels of linguistic and cultural competence in a non-dominant language mainly through interaction with foreign-born parents and other family members at home. Heritage language instruction is currently a “hot topic” and is becoming a sub-discipline within the fields of foreign language education and applied linguistics. Special instruction for heritage language learners is on the rise, particularly in the U.S. and Canada. Providing theoretical and practical information about heritage-language instruction in terms of curriculum design, learner needs, materials development, and assessment procedures, the goal of this book is not only to promote research about heritage students in East Asian languages but also to improve the teaching of these students in various educational settings and all over the world, especially in English speaking countries. The volume is organized in four sections: *Overview—addressing the timeliness, necessity, and applications of the work and issues and future agendas for teaching Chinese, Japanese, and Korean heritage students; *Language Needs Analysis; *Attitude, Motivation, Identity, and Instructional Preference; and *Curriculum Design, Materials Development, and Assessment Procedures Teaching Chinese, Japanese, and Korean Heritage Language Students is intended as a primary text or reference for researchers, educators, and students in the areas of curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment studies related to teaching bilingual and heritage students in general and East Asian heritage students in particular.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many textbooks have been written to teach how to speak foreign languages but textbooks can only take you so far, even with the various media of videos and audio files. The best way is to just face it head on in its natural environment. Go out there, and don't be shy. If you are a beginner, you are bound to make mistakes. More likely, the natives will appreciate your effort to speak their language than pointing out your mistakes and laughing at it. Children absorb languages very quickly because they are unafraid to make mistakes and are not conscientious about their grammar or pronunciation. Very young children make errors with their own first language. Although adults may laugh at the cuteness, they shrug it off and learn from their mistakes. Adults need to do the same. Just as a note, if you have taken Japanese in the past, you will have an easier time with Korean. In this book, we will try to show some basics so that you can go into the native environment. If you wish to test your proficiency in Korean, you can participate in TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean).

Book A Loanword Approach to the Teaching of English As a Foreign Language in Korea

Download or read book A Loanword Approach to the Teaching of English As a Foreign Language in Korea written by David Kent and published by . This book was released on 2016-10-10 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of all the approaches to the teaching of English to speakers of other languages (TESOL), the loanword approach is mindful of the English words found within students' native languages, and seeks to apply these in the learning process for positive transfer. Taking into account research and implementation going back to and prior to the last millennium, here is a study of such a use in the Korean context. As focus is on implementing the loanword approach from multimedia-based learning materials, the Korean cultural influences on computer assisted language learning (CALL) of English as a foreign language (EFL) are explored. The advantages and difficulties associated with implementing the approach are outlined, as is the place of EFL and the application of computer technology in the Korean education system. Focus then turns to investigating the efficacy behind deployment of the approach coupled with a multimedia-based curriculum grounded on culturally constructed methods of learning and teaching.A loanword approach to the teaching of EFL in Korea deserves not only consideration by teachers but also further study. The book is well-resourced and comes to provide an in-depth examination of just one of many practical ways for implementing such an approach in the Korean context.
