Phonetics has only ever been used to describe how words sound. Kung Fu Phonics is the first to employ phonetics PREDICTIVELY, asking students to describe how unfamiliar words SHOULD sound. Kung Fu Phonics is great for teaching K and pre-K kids to read, and with them you can skip the phonetic notations and just have them read and say the words. It's also a fine tool for teaching English to non-native speakers of any age. If your child is reading below grade level, spend twenty minutes a day with him studying phonetics with this book. Phonetics is just a tool, an uncomplicated but exacting series of squiggles. It's a nice bit of misdirection He'll complain about phonetics and how useless it is while you're doing something awfully concrete to bolster his reading skills: teaching PHONICS. (And since he's learning something his classmates aren't, it doesn't have the embarrassing feel of remediation.) It's an 88-page workbook. Twenty-five lessons, five model words and fifty exercise words per lesson. Concise instructions keep almost every lesson to two pages. And the instructions are so clear that anyone who reads English on a high-school level can use Kung Fu Phonics to teach reading. (Alas, you can't just toss it to a kindergartner and tell her to get busy; it requires cooperative effort.) It requires no DVD or audio CD to use; it's ready to teach as is. This is the American English edition of KUNG FU PHONICS. It uses American (Merriam-Webster) phonetics and describes American pronunciations.

We strongly believe, as do many others, that students learn computer networking and hardware fundamentals better and feel more engaged with their courses if they are given interactive practical exercises that illustrate theoretical concepts. There are numerous textbooks on computer networking and hardware concepts as well as publications, including journals and conference proceedings, in computer education and Web-based learning. However, these publications have very limited discussion on software and hardware tools that enhance teaching and learning computer networking and hardware concepts. To address this need, we have written Tools for Teaching Computer Networking and Hardware Concepts, focusing on the development and use of innovative tools for teaching and learning various aspects of computer networking and hardware concepts. We believe the proposed book is unique and is a useful resource to both students and teachers at university, polytechnic, postsecondary, and private training institutions. This book: (1) provides comprehensive coverage of tools and techniques for teaching and learning computer networking and hardware concepts at introductory and advanced levels; (2) can be used as a resource both by students and by teachers in different teaching and learning contexts; (3) offers both students and teachers an opportunity to benefit from the experience of teachers and researchers in other countries in the areas of teaching and learning computer networking and hardware; (4) represents a rich starting point for researchers interested in developing innovative tools for teaching and learning computer networking and hardware concepts; and (5) raises the awareness of the need to enhance face-to-face teaching through the use of online interactive learning and flexible mode of delivery of papers. Book excerpt: The book is based on nine selected, peer-reviewed papers presented at the 10th biennial Networked Learning Conference (NLC) 2016 held in Lancaster. Informed by suggestions from delegates, the nine papers have been chosen by the editors (who were the Chairs of the Conference) as exemplars of cutting edge research on networked learning. Further reviews of all papers were conducted once they were revised as chapters for the book. The chapters are organized into two sections: 1) Situating Networked Learning: Looking Back - Moving Forward, 2) New Challenges: Designs for Networked Learning in the Public Arena. Further, we include an introduction which looks at the evolution of trends in Networked Learning through a semantic analysis of conference papers from the 10 conferences. A final chapter draws out perspectives from the chapters and discusses emerging issues. The book is the fifth in the Networked Learning Conference Series.
