Book Thornton Wilder in Collaboration

Download or read book Thornton Wilder in Collaboration written by Jackson R. Bryer and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this volume evolved from papers presented at the Second International Thornton Wilder Conference, held at Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island, in June 2015. They examine Wilder’s work as both playwright and novelist, focusing upon how he drew on the collaborative mode of creativity required in the theatre, when writing both drama and fiction. The book’s authors use the term “collaboration” in its broadest sense, at times in response to Wilder’s critics who faulted him for “borrowing” from other, earlier, literary works rather than recognizing these “borrowings” as central to the artistic process of collaboration. In exploring Wilder’s collaborative efforts of different kinds, the essays not only consider how Wilder worked with and revised earlier literary texts and the ideas central to those texts, but also analyze how Wilder worked with and inspired other creative individuals and how recent productions of Wilder’s plays, both in the US and abroad, have been the products of unique forms of collaboration.

Book excerpt: "Thornton Wilder: A Life brings readers face to face with the extraordinary man who made words come alive around the world, on the stage and on the page." —James Earl Jones, actor "Comprehensive and wisely fashioned….A splendid and long needed work." —Edward Albee, playwright Thornton Wilder—three-time Pulitzer Prize winner, creator of such enduring stage works as Our Town and The Skin of Our Teeth, and beloved novels like Bridge of San Luis Ray and Theophilus North—was much more than a pivotal figure in twentieth century American theater and literature. He was a world-traveler, a student, a teacher, a soldier, an actor, a son, a brother, and a complex, intensely private man who kept his personal life a secret. In Thornton Wilder: A Life, author Penelope Niven pulls back the curtain to present a fascinating, three-dimensional portrait one of America's greatest playwrights, novelists, and literary icons.

Book The Art of Foreign Language Teaching

Download or read book The Art of Foreign Language Teaching written by Peter Lutzker and published by Narr Francke Attempto Verlag. This book was released on 2022-01-31 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of this work became a standard reference work in the general context of humanistic approaches to foreign language teaching and learning. This new edition gives a brief overview of further developments in relevant fields and discusses the importance of the concept of teaching as an art in light of the increasing standardization and digitalization of education. Reviews of the 1st edition I believe that the book will become a standard reference point for all those who, against the current tide of 'scientific', objectives-based, test-oriented, control-obsessed, sterile approaches to language teaching, continue to believe that language teaching is indeed an art, and a joyful art at that. Prof. Dr. Alan Maley in English Language Teaching Journal Peter Lutzker is a major educational thinker and has spent half an earthly span living towards this major book. (...) I have placed Peter's book on my shelves next to those of Rogers, Curran, Dufeu and Stevick. Mario Rinvolucri in Humanising Language Teaching

Book excerpt: A classic work of American theatre, based on the Scopes Monkey Trial of 1925, which pitted Clarence Darrow against William Jennings Bryan in defense of a schoolteacher accused of teaching the theory of evolution The accused was a slight, frightened man who had deliberately broken the law. His trial was a Roman circus. The chief gladiators were two great legal giants of the century. Like two bull elephants locked in mortal combat, they bellowed and roared imprecations and abuse. The spectators sat uneasily in the sweltering heat with murder in their hearts, barely able to restrain themselves. At stake was the freedom of every American. One of the most moving and meaningful plays of our generation. Praise for Inherit the Wind "A tidal wave of a drama."—New York World-Telegram And Sun “Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee were classic Broadway scribes who knew how to crank out serious plays for thinking Americans. . . . Inherit the Wind is a perpetually prescient courtroom battle over the legality of teaching evolution. . . . We’re still arguing this case–all the way to the White House.”—Chicago Tribune “Powerful . . . a crackling good courtroom play . . . [that] provides two of the juiciest roles in American theater.”—Copley News Service “[This] historical drama . . . deserves respect.”—The Columbus Dispatch

Book Straight Talk to Teachers

Download or read book Straight Talk to Teachers written by Bruce J. Gevirtzman and published by R&L Education. This book was released on 2009-11-16 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a no-holds-barred, candid delivery, Straight Talk to Teachers: Twenty Insane Ideas for a Better Classroom drives directly to the core of what makes an extraordinary teacher, and presents an honest appraisal of why some teachers fail. Bruce J. Gevirtzman speaks to teachers, about teachers, and for teachers. He says, 'This book will provide readers with a hearty laugh-but it also may cause some of them to scream. Rarely does anyone talk about the best ways of helping teachers to become better, because these truths are sometimes scary.' Gevirtzman is convinced that our greatest teachers are hard working, emotionally well adjusted, and incredibly enthusiastic-about their students, their subject matter, and their jobs. By telling it straight, this book can make a huge difference in the way teachers go about their work.
