This book helps K-8 educators solve serious behavior challenges by guiding school-based teams through the five-step PTR process: 1) teaming and goal-setting, 2) data collection, 3) functional behavioral assessment, 4) creation of a behavior intervention plan, and 5) progress-monitoring and data-based decision making. This edition has been updated to include the latest research supporting PTR; increased emphasis on the PTR facilitator's role, collaboration, and the teacher's observations; new information on multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) and evidence-based classroom strategies; and more detailed guidance on every PTR step. Download or read book Teaching Machines written by Audrey Watters and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2023-02-07 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How ed tech was born: Twentieth-century teaching machines--from Sidney Pressey's mechanized test-giver to B. F. Skinner's behaviorist bell-ringing box. Contrary to popular belief, ed tech did not begin with videos on the internet. The idea of technology that would allow students to "go at their own pace" did not originate in Silicon Valley. In Teaching Machines, education writer Audrey Watters offers a lively history of predigital educational technology, from Sidney Pressey's mechanized positive-reinforcement provider to B. F. Skinner's behaviorist bell-ringing box. Watters shows that these machines and the pedagogy that accompanied them sprang from ideas--bite-sized content, individualized instruction--that had legs and were later picked up by textbook publishers and early advocates for computerized learning. Watters pays particular attention to the role of the media--newspapers, magazines, television, and film--in shaping people's perceptions of teaching machines as well as the psychological theories underpinning them. She considers these machines in the context of education reform, the political reverberations of Sputnik, and the rise of the testing and textbook industries. She chronicles Skinner's attempts to bring his teaching machines to market, culminating in the famous behaviorist's efforts to launch Didak 101, the "pre-verbal" machine that taught spelling. (Alternate names proposed by Skinner include "Autodidak," "Instructomat," and "Autostructor.") Telling these somewhat cautionary tales, Watters challenges what she calls "the teleology of ed tech"--the idea that not only is computerized education inevitable, but technological progress is the sole driver of events.

Book Capitalizing on Language Learners Individuality

Download or read book Capitalizing on Language Learners Individuality written by Tammy Gregersen and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2014-01-13 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book closes the gap between theory and classroom application by capitalizing on learners’ individuality in second or foreign language learning. The book examines the existing literature and theoretical underpinnings of each of the most prominent learner characteristics including anxiety, beliefs, cognitive abilities, motivation, strategies, styles and willingness to communicate. This strong foundation, coupled with the wide variety of activities that are suggested at the end of each chapter, arms the reader with ideas to conquer the problems created by negative affect and to capitalize on positive, facilitative emotions. The tasks are unrestricted by language and can be modified for use with technology, emergent learners and large classes, making this book a useful resource for both in-service teachers and pre-service teachers in university language teacher education programs.

Book The Rogue Educator

Download or read book The Rogue Educator written by Rollo W. Jones and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-11-08 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Educators are natural pioneers; they have always been the transmitters and transformers of history. Courageous educators have changed the very course of our culture by taking risks and challenging prevailing systems. Somewhere along the way, however, that sense of audacity has diminished. Overuse of accountability agents ranging from uniformity, bell curves, statistics and threats of litigation threaten to compress our educational systems into a linear track devoid of color, creativity and diversity. Diverse personalities, fresh ideas and new strategies are required to sidestep the narrow, one-size-fits-all path of today's school systems. As the world becomes more diverse, teachers need to lead the way in embracing their own distinct approaches. The Rogue Educator concept is best explained by taking a look at specific teacher qualities and possible paradigm shifts for each one. The Rogue Educator book is a collection of easy-to-read, familiar, and memorable characters that will resonate with all instructional leaders and professionals. Teachers and other educators will recognize a bit of themselves in the profiles and will learn new ways to capitalize on their own personalities by making the classroom—and the school--a more positive and supportive environment for all.
