Book excerpt: Research shows that exclusionary discipline practices in schools deprive students of educational opportunities and fail to make schools safer (McCarter, 2017; Gonzalez, 2012). Some educational institutions are shifting from a punitive approach to one that emphasizes restorative justice which is defined as "an approach to discipline that engages all parties in a balanced practice that brings together all people impacted by an issue or behavior" (Gonzalez, 2012). This study utilized a qualitative research design where interviews were conducted with teachers and administrators in order to explore their experiences with restorative justice practices in the school setting. Data analysis indicated that restorative justice was a student-centered approach which resulted in building relationships and community in schools. In turn, this resulted in a more humanistic approach to student interactions than the traditional de-humanistic approach of zero tolerance policies.

Book excerpt: Despite widespread acknowledgment about the viability of alternative behavioral interventions in our urban high schools across the nation, there is scarcity in research studies that specifically examine the impact of restorative justice practices on school climate. This mixed method study used a case study research design to examine the impact on school climate of the implementation of a restorative justice (RJ) practice in an urban high school in the State of California. Data were collected using interviews, survey, district documents and school site archival documents. Triangulation of data from these sources was used to validate the research findings. The high school chosen, California City High School (CCHS), a pseudonym, was a public high school located in a southeastern neighborhood of a large metropolitan city in southern California. District documents indicated that the school was in its third year of RJ implementation having completed the training necessary to facilitate the shift from traditional approaches of behavior management to a RJ approach, making this school a good fit for the study. This study highlighted the use of restorative circles and community building, and positive behavior support as the most pragmatic and effective RJ practices in the CCHS school environment. Students who have undergone restorative circles, and community building mediations, are perceived by teachers and administrator as exhibiting improved behavioral decision-making, and lower levels of recidivism when compared to similar age students before implementation of restorative circles. The school district's disciplinary data of 2007 through 2014 showed a marked decline in both instructional days lost to suspension and suspension rate following the implementation of restorative justice practices. Problems encountered during implementation at this school site involved inadequate and inconsistent training methodologies, time constraints for implementation, metrics for rating implementation success, and staff's attitude to change. This study would have benefited from the inclusion of data from additional schools and from parent and student interviews. The inclusion of additional schools would have enabled the analysis of staff perceptions at the school level. Hence, future studies should employ data from a larger number of schools to cross-validate the current findings. Some limitations should be noted when drawing conclusions from this research. The study examined staff and teacher survey and discipline referrals during three years of RJ implementation at CCHS. However, I did not have outsider observers to verify quality of RJ implementation, which many consider the "gold standard" for measuring fidelity of implementation. Also given CCHS has only been implementing its RJ program across a 3-year period, this study may not have captured the full effect of RJ implementation on school climate. Similar to most of the school climate research, this study was neither longitudinal nor experimental. This is a problem for the research because causal inferences are not possible. Future studies examining causal relationships with interventions or a longitudinal design are clearly warranted. A longitudinal design would also account for the fact that school climate perception is not static. It potentially changes and evolves during different points in the school year (e.g., proximity to holiday periods or examination periods) and corresponding with different events at the school (e.g., administrative changes or the introduction of a new initiative). Hence, longitudinal designs should be adopted in future research, as they would account for the impermanency of school climate perception.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this mixed methods study was to examine the implementation of Restorative Justice in an urban central California high school through the lens of administrators, and teacher perceptions of agency, campus climate, and impact of the implementation. The participating school in this study defined their implementation of Restorative Justice as Restorative Practices. The Quality Implementation Framework (Durlak, Meyers, & Wandersman, 2012) guided the development of the literature review and created the framework for the study. This mixed-methods sequential explanatory study examined the relationship between teacher perceptions of agency, school climate, and the implementation of Restorative Practices. Teachers at the participating school completed a survey to measure perceptions of agency, campus climate, and the implementation of Restorative Practices. Additionally, the study included interviews with the principal, Restorative Practices Counselor, and ten teachers. Correlations were used to determine the relationship of teacher perceptions of agency to their perceptions of campus climate and Restorative Practices implementation. Correlations revealed a strong relationship between teacher perceptions of agency and campus climate. Additionally, correlations revealed a strong relationship between teacher perceptions of agency and Restorative Practices implementation. Teacher interviews revealed that perceptions of Restorative Practices on campus remained consistent over the three years between implementation and the time of the study. Data from the ten teacher interviews suggested that greater than 50% of all teachers disapproved of the implementation of Restorative Practices. The level of disapproval remained consistent over the past three years. Finally, interviews described the implementation process of Restorative Practices.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine how teachers and guidance counselors/administrators perceived the impact of restorative practices on building positive relationships and school community. The participants of this study included middle school teachers, guidance counselors, and administrators from two schools in a single school district located in southeastern Pennsylvania. Participants were asked to complete an online survey that included Likert scale questions and open-ended questions. Additional data were collected through a voluntary personal interview. Data collected from 39 surveys and ten personal interviews were analyzed. Results of the study indicated that teachers and guidance counselors/administrators felt positively about restorative practices. The majority of respondents agreed that restorative practices were an effective way to deal with disciplinary issues in schools and a good alternative to more punitive disciplinary measures. Seventy-two percent of teachers and 86% of guidance counselors/administrators indicated the use of restorative practices increased students' feelings of connectedness to the school environment. Improved academics performances and declines in certain disciplinary consequences including referrals, detentions, in-school suspensions, out-of-school suspensions, and expulsions were also attributed to the implementation of restorative practices. In contrast, student attendance rates, staff morale, and staff relationships were identified as specific areas that respondents felt were not positively impacted by the implementation of restorative practices.
