Book Teacher morale and school leadership

Download or read book Teacher morale and school leadership written by Peter Hyatt Middleton and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under current conditions, where high-stakes testing, state and federal education funding cuts, (Slater, 2004) and performance based teacher evaluation are just a few of the many issues facing public education in America; teachers can experience outside stress and pressure in addition to negative teaching environment influences within their respective schools. Teachers in some schools can experience low morale and ineffective leadership; both teacher morale and school leadership are interconnected. This research project links aspects of school leadership to ways to positively contribute to a school’s teaching environment and teacher morale; specifically, the aim is to apply research-based solutions to boost teacher morale and, in turn, increase performance. Through research on the effects and implications of the roles of school principal’s impact on trust, morale, cooperation, teacher interdependency, shared decision-making and school vision, a multiyear intervention plan and timeline can be used to alter teaching, learning, and leadership conditions which can lead to increased student performance.

Book Exploring the Morale of Middle level Public School Teachers in Minnesota with Regard to Teaching in High stakes Tested Areas

Download or read book Exploring the Morale of Middle level Public School Teachers in Minnesota with Regard to Teaching in High stakes Tested Areas written by Brian Zambreno and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent research has shown a correlation between teacher morale and teachers deciding to leave the profession (Skaalvik and Skaalvik, 2011). Research also indicates that teacher morale is at an all-time low in the United States as well as other parts of the world (Harris Interactive, 2013; Mackenzie, 2007; Sargent and Hannum, 2005). Additionally, research has shown that high-stakes accountability assessment has decreased teacher morale (Lynch, 2014). However, it appears that prior to this study, no research had been done related to teachers in Minnesota or that compared how teachers in similar schools or school systems are impacted by high-stakes accountability systems. This causal-comparative study sought to determine if there was a difference in morale for middle-level public school teachers in Minnesota who teach subjects that are assessed with state accountability assessments as compared to the morale of teachers in non-tested subjects. It also looked at teacher morale based on gender, years of teaching experience, and geographic location of schools in Minnesota. The findings of the study revealed that there were not significant differences in morale for teachers in tested and non-tested areas or based on gender or years of teaching experience. There was a significant difference found between teachers who teach in the Twin Cities suburbs when compared to teachers who teach in Greater Minnesota where teachers in Greater Minnesota has significantly lower morale.

Book Examining the Relationship Between Teachers Perceptions of System Leadership Teacher Morale and Teacher Attendance in the Capital Region of New York State

Download or read book Examining the Relationship Between Teachers Perceptions of System Leadership Teacher Morale and Teacher Attendance in the Capital Region of New York State written by Hillary E. Brewer and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 2012-2013 school year, public school districts in New York State simultaneously implemented two critical policies that had a significant influence on teacher practice in the classroom; the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and the Annual Professional Performance Review of teachers (APPR). After three years of implementation the researcher felt it was both timely and important to examine what if any impact these recent policy changes have had on teachers with regard to their perceptions' of system level leadership, morale, and motivation to attend work. This quantitative study examined the relationship between teachers' perceptions of system level leadership, teacher morale and teacher attendance rates in the Capital Region area of New York State. The researcher designed a survey instrument to collect teachers' self-reported absence information; teachers' perceived feelings of morale and teachers' perceptions of the effectiveness of the system leader. In total, 960 respondents were included in the sample; a 16.05% response rate. The results of this study indicate teachers' perceptions of effective system leadership have a statistically significant relationship with teacher attendance, however there is not a practical significance that should be examined by education policy makers and individual school districts. The results of this research highlight the frequency of days some teachers in the population were absent from school for reasons other than school business. The New York State Education Department and individual school districts should examine this information carefully and work to implement policies and procedures that keep teachers in the classroom. The results of this study also indicate there is a statistically significant, but not practically significant relationship between iv teachers' perceived sense of morale and the number of days a teacher is absent from work for reasons other than school business. Finally, the data collected indicates teachers' perceptions of effective system leadership have a statistically significant and practically significant relationship with teachers' perceived sense of morale. The results of this research suggest that system leaders would benefit from examining their own practices and the practices within the school district in order to improve or keep teacher morale high.
