Book excerpt: At twenty-six, Bernadette Nason has it all--an exciting job in London, an awesome flat, a colorful social life. However, the truth is, in the wake of divorce, debt, and workplace sexual harassment, she's hanging by a thread. When her cat is run over by a garbage truck, Nason makes an impetuous decision. With almost no travel experience, she grabs the first available overseas job and, within two months, finds herself in Libya. 'Fitting in' has never been her strength, yet here she is, the most unstable, self-loathing, slightly overweight fish ever to throw itself recklessly out of its own water. Move over, Bridget Jones, there's a new, real-life idiot in town. Inspired by her expatriate adventures during Gaddafi's turbulent regime, c. 1984-85, Nason covers her thwarted desire to 'fit in', from bizarre daily life to terrifying confrontations with the Morality Police. Told with candor and wit, TEA IN TRIPOLI, follows a young woman's attempts to escape her past on an extraordinary, often perilous, journey of self-discovery. It's sure to resonate with anyone who has ever run away from problems instead of taking care of business.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coffee is a dark drink ranging from brown to black with a bitter taste. Coffee is prepared from boiling ground coffee. Coffee beans are collected from the all-year greenery coffee tree. The beans are roasted and grinded, then prepared. Many people in the Middle East add cardamom and coriander to their coffee, which gives it pleasant smells that ecstasy the soul so that it cannot resist its temptation, when we drink it, our souls are refreshed and it provides us with a good mood and makes us feel peaceful and comfortable. The word coffee was derived from the name of the town of Caffa in Abyssinia (Ethiopia). Other evidence reported that the coffee tree originated from Yemen, where it was exported from the city of Mocha (thus coffee called Mocha Caffe). If I ask you about your favorite drink and your answer is coffee, don’t be surprised, you are among the millions of people who consider coffee their only choice. According to Insider Monkey, People consume more than 500 billion coffee cups/year around the globe. Drinking coffee every morning, gives a person a wonderful mood, mental clarity, and a sense of happiness and brilliance. Coffee also has a role in the permanence of intimacy between people, whether they are friends or loved ones, relatives or strangers. Coffee in cold weather gives us warmth and tranquility, and many people love it every sunrise before going to work to clear their minds and arrange their thoughts. The book devoted an extensive section to clarifying the positive role of coffee on human health, and its beneficial effects on all organs and systems of the human body were explained. Through listing the results of medical research, it became clear to us that coffee has a clear positive effect on human health in general if it is consumed in moderate quantities and without excess.

Book Thomas Jefferson s Qur an

Download or read book Thomas Jefferson s Qur an written by Denise Spellberg and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this original and illuminating book, Denise A. Spellberg reveals a little-known but crucial dimension of the story of American religious freedom—a drama in which Islam played a surprising role. In 1765, eleven years before composing the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson bought a Qur’an. This marked only the beginning of his lifelong interest in Islam, and he would go on to acquire numerous books on Middle Eastern languages, history, and travel, taking extensive notes on Islam as it relates to English common law. Jefferson sought to understand Islam notwithstanding his personal disdain for the faith, a sentiment prevalent among his Protestant contemporaries in England and America. But unlike most of them, by 1776 Jefferson could imagine Muslims as future citizens of his new country. Based on groundbreaking research, Spellberg compellingly recounts how a handful of the Founders, Jefferson foremost among them, drew upon Enlightenment ideas about the toleration of Muslims (then deemed the ultimate outsiders in Western society) to fashion out of what had been a purely speculative debate a practical foundation for governance in America. In this way, Muslims, who were not even known to exist in the colonies, became the imaginary outer limit for an unprecedented, uniquely American religious pluralism that would also encompass the actual despised minorities of Jews and Catholics. The rancorous public dispute concerning the inclusion of Muslims, for which principle Jefferson’s political foes would vilify him to the end of his life, thus became decisive in the Founders’ ultimate judgment not to establish a Protestant nation, as they might well have done. As popular suspicions about Islam persist and the numbers of American Muslim citizenry grow into the millions, Spellberg’s revelatory understanding of this radical notion of the Founders is more urgent than ever. Thomas Jefferson’s Qur’an is a timely look at the ideals that existed at our country’s creation, and their fundamental implications for our present and future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ABC News correspondent’s riveting chronicle of his journey through the Middle East—and being held hostage by pro-Iranian terrorists in Beirut. A New York Times Notable Book—with an introduction by the author. On June 18, 1987, Charles Glass was kidnapped by pro-Iranian terrorists in a Shiite Muslim suburb of Beirut and held for sixty-two days. His daring escape on August 18, 1987, made headlines worldwide. But Glass never forgot the reason he was in Lebanon or abandoned the idea of a book capturing the splendid vitality and diversity of life in the Middle East. Tribes with Flags is the book Glass always meant it to be: A chronicle of his journey from the southern Turkish coast, around the bay of Alexandretta, and through Syria, Jordan, and Lebanon. Glass visited farms, slums, and refugee camps as well as royal friends in feudal palaces, capturing the entire spectrum of Levantine life. The journey ends with a gripping account of Glass’s kidnapping in Beirut—an intimate portrayal of life as a hostage—and his successful flight to freedom. “A literary and spiritual ramble through the countries of the Levant . . . Glass’s account of two months’ captivity and his escape bring to an exciting conclusion this engrossing, informative, unusual travel book.” —Publishers Weekly
