Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Holidaying in New Zealand and adventure activities like bungee jumping, canyon swinging, and jetboating up wild rivers are virtually synonymous. But there are other adventures that this country–one of the most isolated in the world–offers. Finding them may not be that easy, nor is getting there and back in one piece. Lee Traynor has therefore explored the two main southern islands of New Zealand: The South Island (Te Wai Pounamu) and Stewart Island, and undertaken a number of shorter and longer hikes (tramps). Among these are the Great Walks of the Abel Tasman Coastal Track, the Kepler Track, and the Milford Track. These three tracks, each with its own distinct personality, are set in spectacular landscapes found only in New Zealand. The utmost technical challenge is, however, the ten-day North-West Circuit of Stewart Island (which includes parts of the Rakiura Track, another Great Walk), a trek through temperate rainforests, all but impassable muddy tracks, and across extensive coastal sand dunes reminiscent of the south-eastern coast of Australia. Lee Traynor recounts the preparations and the two months spent in New Zealand travelling around these southern islands and his adventures on and off the track. Lavishly illustrated with over 175 colour photographs and maps, and 20 black and white photos and diagrams.

Book Buying the Land Selling the Land

Download or read book Buying the Land Selling the Land written by Richard Boast and published by Victoria University Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studying Crown Maori land policy and practice in the period 1869–1929, from the establishment of the Native Land Court power until the cessation of large-scale Crown purchasing by Gordon Coates, this investigation chronicles the bleak and grim tidal wave of Crown purchasing that dominated the Maori people under very difficult circumstances. While recognizing that the government purchasing of Maori land was in its own way driven by genuine, if blinkered, idealism, this work's deep research on land purchasing policy gives renewed insight on the significant politicians of the era, such as Sir Donald McLean, John Balance, and John McKenzie who were strong advocates of expanded and state-controlled land purchasing.

  • Author : Horatio Gordon Robley
  • Publisher : Forgotten Books
  • Release : 2015-06-24
  • ISBN : 9781330122013
  • Pages : 90 pages

Download or read book Pounamu written by Horatio Gordon Robley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pounamu: Notes on New Zealand Greenstone This little is an endeavor to set down the results of careful investigations extending over many years on the subject of pounamu or New Zealand greenstone, and the special uses to which it was applied by the Maori. For savage art, rude though it be, and doomed to extinction as civilization advances, has an individuality of its own which makes it of importance to the ethnologist and of interest to the student; and it is the duty, no less than the pleasure, of those who have studied it to place on record what they have been able to learn of its achievements. Ever since the Pakeha, the first European visitors to New Zealand, regained their ship there has been much carrying away of examples of old Maori craftsmanship, and those in greenstone have always had a special attraction for collectors. So many specimens of worked pounamu, indeed, have been brought to the British Isles since Captain Cook's return to England in 1771, that the silver streak might almost be called te wai pounamu. The old worked greenstone now sees no more wars, but it is still the object of the rivalry of collectors, who value it, as its former possessors had done, for its beauty and rarity, and for the strange and interesting forms into which it has been wrought.
