Book Tau Trigger at the ATLAS Experiment

Download or read book Tau Trigger at the ATLAS Experiment written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many theoretical models, like the Standard Model or SUSY at large tan([beta]), predict Higgs bosons or new particles which decay more abundantly to final states including tau leptons than to other leptons. At the energy scale of the LHC, the identification of tau leptons, in particular in the hadronic decay mode, will be a challenging task due to an overwhelming QCD background which gives rise to jets of particles that can be hard to distinguish from hadronic tau decays. Equipped with excellent tracking and calorimetry, the ATLAS experiment has developed tau identification tools capable of working at the trigger level. This contribution presents tau trigger algorithms which exploit the main features of hadronic tau decays and describes the current tau trigger commissioning activities. Many of the SM processes being investigated at ATLAS, as well as numerous BSM searches, contain tau leptons in their final states. Being able to trigger effectively on the tau leptons in these events will contribute to the success of the ATLAS experiment. The tau trigger algorithms and monitoring infrastructure are ready for the first data, and are being tested with the data collected with cosmic muons. The development of efficiency measurements methods using QCD and Z → [tau][tau] events is well advanced.

Book Using Boosted Decision Trees for Tau Identification in the ATLAS Experiment

Download or read book Using Boosted Decision Trees for Tau Identification in the ATLAS Experiment written by Jennifer Lynn Godfrey and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ATLAS detector will begin taking data from P-p collisions in 2009. This experiment will allow for many different physics measurements and searches. The production of tau leptons at the LHC is a key signature of the decay of both the standard model Higgs (via H $\rightarrow \tau \tau$) and SUSY particles. Taus have a short lifetime ($c \tau= 87$ $\mu$m) and decay hadronically 65% of the time. Many QCD interactions produce similar hadronic showers and have cross-sections about 1 billion times larger than tau production. Multivariate techniques are therefore often used to distinguish taus from this background. Boosted Decision Trees (BDTs) are a machine-learning technique for developing cut-based discriminants which can significantly aid in extracting small signal samples from overwhelming backgrounds. In this study, BDTs are used for tau identification for the ATLAS experiment. They are a fast, flexible alternative to existing discriminants with comparable or better performance.

Book Experimental Test of Lepton Universality in Tau Decay

Download or read book Experimental Test of Lepton Universality in Tau Decay written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The branching fractions for [tau] 2!e[nu][nu]{sub {tau}} and h[nu]{sub {tau}} are measured using data collected with the CLEO detector at the CESR ee− collider: [Beta]{sub e} = 0.1776 ± 0.0006 ± 0.0017, [beta][mu] = 0.1737 ± 0.0008 ± 0.0018, and [Beta]{sub h} = 0.1152 ± 0.0005 ± 0.0012, where the first error is statistical, the second systematic, and h refers to either a charged [pi] or K. Also measured is the tau mass, m{sub {tau}} =(1778.2 ± 1.4) MeV. Lepton universality is affirmed by the relative branching fractions ([Beta]{sub {mu}}/[Beta]{sub e} = 0.9777 ± 0.0063 ± 0.0087, [Beta]{sub h}/[Beta]{sub e} = 0.6484 ± 0.0041 ± 0.0060) and the charged-current gauge coupling-constant ratios (g{sub {mu}} = g{sub e} = 1.0026 ± 0.0055, g{sub {tau}}/g{sub {mu}} = 0.9990 ± 0.0098). The tau mass result may be recast as a tau neutrino mass limit, m{sub {nu}{sub {tau}}}

Book Tau Lepton Physics Proceedings Of The Second Workshop

Download or read book Tau Lepton Physics Proceedings Of The Second Workshop written by K K Gan and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1993-04-08 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The II International Workshop on Tau Lepton Physics was held in Ohio, USA in September 1992. Its purpose is to gather the experts on tau lepton physics to examine the current understanding of the tau lepton physics and to assess future prospects. A particular emphasis of the Workshop was a detailed examination of the '1-prong problem': the discrepancy between the inclusive measurement of one-charged-particle decay branching ratio and the sum of the exclusive decays. The Workshop also stimulated new ideas on tests of the Standard Model using the third generation lepton and assessed the future prospects of the lepton physics.

Download or read book B Decays written by Sheldon Stone and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1994 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2nd edition is an extensive update of "B Decays?. The revisions are necessary because of the extensive amount of new data and new theoretical ideas. This book reviews what is known about b-quark decays and also looks at what can be learned in the future.The importance of this research area is increasing, as evidenced by the approval of the luminosity upgrade for CESR and the asymmetric B factories at SLAC and KEK, and the possibility of experiments at hadron colliders.The key experimental observations made thus far, measurement of the lifetimes of the different B species, B0-B0 mixing, the discovery of ?Penguin? mediated decays, and the extraction of the CKM matrix elements Vub and Vcb from semileptonic decays, as well as more mundane results, are described in great detail by the experimentalists who have been closely involved with making the measurements. Theoretical progress in understanding b-quark decays using HQET and lattice gauge techniques are described by theorists who have developed and used these techniques.Synthesizing the experimental and theoretical information, several articles discuss the implications for the ?Standard Model? and how further tests can be done using measurements of CP violation in the B system.

Book Identifying Hadronic Tau Decays Using Calorimeter Topological Clusters at ATLAS

Download or read book Identifying Hadronic Tau Decays Using Calorimeter Topological Clusters at ATLAS written by Michel Trottier-McDonald and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ATLAS experiment collects data on the world's highest energy proton-proton collisions. Its primary goals are to search for direct evidence of physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics, and to provide a final verdict on the existence of the Standard Model Higgs boson. A robust tau identification procedure is an important ingredient in the search for Standard Model and supersymmetric Higgs bosons. In this study, new tau identification variables based on calorimeter topological clusters are investigated. These variables complement existing calorimeter-based variables by bringing additional discriminating power against hadronic jets. They have a straightforward physics interpretation which allows them to be calculated at particle-level. Some of these new variables are shown to be robust against background noise from the underlying event and in-time pileup, two effects which negatively impact tau identification. Several of these new variables are now part of the official tau reconstruction software at ATLAS.
