Book Targeting the Transition to Kindergarten

Download or read book Targeting the Transition to Kindergarten written by Sean E. Brotherson and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the world of early childhood care and education, the preparation of children to enter school successfully and perform well in their learning environments has become a subject of significant interest and concern (McLanahan, 2005). The term "school readiness" is generally used to describe the process of ensuring that children are prepared by parents and society for a successful school experience. Clearly defined, school readiness embraces the combination of knowledge, skills, and behaviors that a child should learn and be able to do as they enter the school environment. Areas of a child's growth and well-being that receive attention in school readiness include physical abilities and motor development; social and emotional development; motivation and desire for learning; cognitive development and early academic skills; creativity and imagination; and language and literacy development (Minnesota Department of Education, 2007). While a variety of early education programs exist ranging from Head Start to other models, the authors are interested in the outcomes associated with a family-centered intervention that brings parents and pre-kindergarten children together to advance school readiness and parent education. This program is entitled the Gearing Up for Kindergarten program and to date only a single study has examined its influence on parent outcomes. The purpose of this study was to gather information on basic demographics of program participants, parent perceptions of the general value and impacts of the program related to child school readiness, and teacher perceptions of the impacts of the program related to child school readiness. The essential question for study was how program participants in Gearing Up for Kindergarten compare to children in a non-experimental group on selected school readiness outcomes as assessed by both parents and teachers. Results indicate that the Gearing up for Kindergarten program appears to be effective at increasing the academic skills of children, making them better prepared to start kindergarten. The program is also related to increases in the amount of reading parents do with their children, which undoubtedly plays a role in the increased academic readiness seen in their children. Figures are appended.

Book Head Start Families School Readiness Beliefs and Transitioning Roles

Download or read book Head Start Families School Readiness Beliefs and Transitioning Roles written by Vanessa J. Pressimone and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: School readiness research has largely focused on child-level outcomes (e.g., academic and behavioral skill development), as well as teacher and parent reports of activities targeting children's kindergarten transition. Limited work has examined family involvement at the preschool level, particularly as pertains to the school readiness of families. While early childhood programs like Head Start (HS) emphasize and strive to involve families in a variety of ways, the relationship between parents and school shifts dramatically once children enter kindergarten. Parents of HS graduates may find themselves unprepared for the shift in involvement with school that occurs across this transition period in their children's education. Further, the types of involvement activities completed by parents may be shaped by their beliefs about their own roles. However, existing knowledge of parents' beliefs and expectations about their roles during the kindergarten transition is narrow in scope. It is additionally constricted by the use of measures with untested or poor reliability and validity. The development of such measures has previously neglected to seek the direct input of stakeholders like parents of transitioning children. Thus, the current study employed a mixed methods, participatory action research approach to develop the Family Expectations for School Readiness Involvement (FESRI) scale, a measure of parents' beliefs and expectations about parental roles and involvement in preparing their preschool children for elementary school across the kindergarten transition. Review by key stakeholders (HS staff and parents) suggested the FESRI's social acceptability regarding content and ease of use. Exploratory factor analysis yielded a three-factor structure: Relationships, Parent as Teacher, and Preparing for Kindergarten. Rasch modeling provided evidence of acceptable item functioning within each factor and suggested directions for further measure development (e.g., work with parents with lower agreement on FESRI beliefs factors). Preliminary explorations suggested a significant, positive association between these beliefs and family involvement behaviors in HS parents. Initial support was also noted for associations between beliefs and family characteristics potentially reflecting exposure to US school culture and HS services.

Book The Transition to Kindergarten

Download or read book The Transition to Kindergarten written by Amy L. Halliburton and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transition to kindergarten has important implications for children's educational outcomes, including their long-term academic achievement, as well as their social-emotional well-being (Entwisle & Alexander, 1993; Ramey & Ramey, 1994). Using an ecological perspective (Bronfenbrenner, 1977), and accounting for the established influence of child demographic characteristics on academic and social outcomes, the unique effect of transition activities on children's success in transitioning to kindergarten was explored. Additionally, the influence of teacher characteristics such as education and experience on use of transition activities was examined. Data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study--Kindergarten Cohort (ECLS-K; West) was analyzed. Because of the nested structure of the data, multilevel modeling was used to address the research questions. Results revealed that the number of transition activities used by teachers was positively related to children's kindergarten-spring general knowledge scores. Follow-up analyses revealed that parent-child visits to kindergarten classrooms, having preschoolers spend time in kindergarten classrooms, and sending information home to parents were positively associated with children's general knowledge scores. For teachers, results revealed that number of years teaching preschool and kindergarten were positively related to use of transition activities.

Book Kindergarten Transition Services School Climate and Parental Involvement

Download or read book Kindergarten Transition Services School Climate and Parental Involvement written by Alaina Elizabeth Boyle and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transition into kindergarten is a critical educational transition for children that has enduring academic and social consequences. Academic, socioemotional, and behavioral challenges following the transition to K-12 schooling can initiate turning points characterized by negative academic trajectories across young people’s educational careers. The current study examines the effects of kindergarten school processes (i.e., transition services and school climate) on children’s academic and socioemotional outcomes in third grade and to what extent these relations are mediated by children’s early adjustment and parental educational involvement. Family socioeconomic status (SES) was also tested as a possible moderator of study relations. Data were drawn from 10,540 kindergarten students (50% females; 63% White, 11% African American, 16% Latino, 6% Asian American, and 4% other race/ethnicity) participating in the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Kindergarten Cohort 1998. Results indicated that both kindergarten transition services and school climate were related to children’s academic abilities, but not socioemotional adjustment, in third grade. The link between kindergarten school processes and children’s distal outcomes was mediated by children’s greater early academic skills mastery in the spring of kindergarten, which in turn elicited greater parental educational involvement behaviors. Moderation analyses revealed that greater early academic skills elicited more school-based involvement strategies for high SES children, whereas lower levels of early academic skills elicited more home-based involvement strategies for middle and low SES children. These findings suggest that academic interventions and supports could be carefully targeted to better support young children’s early educational success

Book Promoting Successful Transitions to Kindergarten

Download or read book Promoting Successful Transitions to Kindergarten written by Katie Christine Hart and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to develop, implement, and evaluate the efficacy of two intervention program packages adapted from evidence-based approaches, and designed to promote successful transitions to kindergarten for behaviorally at-risk preschoolers from Head Start organizations in Miami-Dade County, Florida. Fifty children identified by their preschool teachers as being at high-risk for problematic transitions to kindergarten due to externalizing behavior problems were randomly assigned to one of two groups. Group 1 (High Intervention) received a package of programs in which children's behavioral, social-emotional, and academic functioning were targeted using evidence-based approaches including a four-week adapted Children's Summer Treatment Program before the start of the kindergarten year. The program included weekly parent transitional workshops before the start of kindergarten, weekly parent transitional workshops after the start of the kindergarten year, and monthly school consultations and parent transitional workshops throughout the children's kindergarten year. Group 2 (Low Intervention) received the same series of parent transitional workshops, but the children did not receive the adapted Children's Summer Treatment Program or school consultation sessions throughout the kindergarten year. The children's transition to kindergarten was evaluated and compared in the fall and spring of the kindergarten year via parent and teacher report, and objective measures of behavioral, social-emotional, and academic functioning. Results from this study indicate that children receiving high intervention services prior to kindergarten entry had more successful transitions to kindergarten. This was demonstrated by fewer problems in their behavioral and academic functioning when compared to children receiving low intervention services.

Book Supporting Children s Well Being During Early Childhood Transition to School

Download or read book Supporting Children s Well Being During Early Childhood Transition to School written by Tatalovi? Vorkapi?, Sanja and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2020-10-23 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life transitions differ concerning the intensity of the change and the intensity of the child’s reaction to that change. For most children, the first and most significant transition is from the family home to an institution of early care and education, which includes preschool. These transitions can also include children's passage from kindergarten to elementary school. However, the intensity of the child's reaction is related to the size of the change that is happening and also to who or what is involved in that change and the importance a child attributes to that someone or something. Supporting Children’s Well-Being During Early Childhood Transition to School is an essential scholarly publication that examines evidence-based practices and approaches that fully support a child’s well-being during transition periods in early childhood. It serves as a resource to rethink contemporary transition theoretical models, research studies, and applied practices. Featuring a wide range of topics such as emotional competency, language learners, and professional development, this book is ideal for academicians, psychologists, early childhood educators, daycare centers, curriculum designers, policymakers, researchers, education professionals, and students.
